Perfect start to Central West region’s new JuniorsOn The Move program

Jack Newton Junior Golf Central West territory manager Tom Perfect, also Duntryleague’s assistant professional, is expecting big things from the region’s new Juniors On The Move program, which debuted at the Orange club last weekend.

There was 59 budding superstars of the game, 14 of them girls, that turned out Duntryleague forthe introduction day and Perfect says he’s hopeful the majority of them will sign up for the whole program, which continues at Mudgee next month.

“I’m really hoping all of them will sign up for the whole program, it was a great turn-out and we had kids from Orange obviously, but also Bathurst, Dubbo, Mudgee and Blayney. A few even came over from Dunedoo and Eugowra,” Perfect enthused.

This year’s program is a first for the central west and is also thought to be the first time it’s run this side of the Blue Mountains, and although it’s aimed at kids aged from about eight to 14, Perfect said Sunday’s range of golfers was far more diverse.

“We had one as young as four,” he said.

“He was a funny little dude and absolutely loved it, which is what we want, and as I said before the day we were never going to turn those kids away.

“We had a big range of skill bases as well. We had the younger kids who had never played the game before right up to the 12, 13 and 14-year-olds who knew the game well and can really play.

“It was a really good day, a bit of an introduction but we got out and played some golf too.”

The Juniors On The Move program, as Perfect explained in the lead-up to Sunday’s first day, is designed to give kids a playing introduction to the sport, rather than one limited to the driving range.

The goal is for it to act as a stepping stone for those kids on their way to competition golf and involves them playing six or nine holes on a modified course, before they build up to 18-hole and multi-day tournaments.

The Juniors On The Move program continues at Mudgee on April 8, before legs at Blayney (May 6), Forbes (June 3), Dubbo (July 1), Cowra (August 5), Parkes (September 2), Wentworth (October 14) and the final round at Bathurst (December 2).
