Grafton Junior Classic - Sunday July 19th, 2015

Golfers from Ballina, Yamba, Murwillumbah, Ocean Shores, Kyogle, Casino, Byron Bay, Coraki, Coolangatta-Tweed Heads, Lismore and the host club made up a good field of 37 golfers enjoying the hospitality at Grafton.

Four players, some only slightly taller than the club they were holding, teed off in the 5 hole Tyro competition.  A good score of 32 shots from Sophie Gaskell (Ballina) was good enough to hold off Zoe Gaskell (Ballina), Annalese McKee (Grafton) and Oslo Harridine (Yamba).  We look forward to seeing these young players grace our NRDGA Order of Merit events in the years to come.

The 9 Hole Cadet Boys competition was again a tight affair with only 3 shots separating the top three players’ gross scores.  Jayme Walters (Kyogle) won on the day with a score of 46 closely followed by Connor Whitelock (Byron Bay) and Tyrelle Roberts (Casino).  The Cadet Boys nett competition was convincingly won by Brayden Howlett (Kyogle) with a great score of 26.  Other players to beat their handicap were Kane Whitelock (Byron Bay), Nathan Mackenzie (Ballina) and Daniel Mackenzie (Ballina).  The Cadet Girls gross event was taken out by Jenna Carter (Yamba) on a countback from Hollie Fuller (Grafton).  The Cadet Girls nett event was won by Maddie McKee (Grafton) with a fantastic score of 21.

A good field of 5 girls contested the Junior Girls division and the best gross score on the day was recorded by Maddie Trew (Murwillumbah).  In a very close event, Maddy’s score was 1 shot better than Eleka Moore (Ballina) who was also one shot better than the local gun Courtney Fuller (Grafton).  Courtney had to be content with the Junior Girls nett prize.

The Junior Boys division at Grafton was an exciting affair with the final result not being known until after a 5 hole playoff.  Kyle Underwood (Ballina), Mackenzie Wright (Yamba) and Alex Hunt (Murwillumbah) all finished with a good score of 3 over par 75.  Kyle birdied the first hole but ultimately was knocked out after the 3 hole aggregate scores were calculated.  Mackenzie and Alex then went into sudden death and Alex won out on the 5th hole of the playoff to claim the major prize of the day.  Reilly Wunderlich (Yamba) had a great day out with a nett score 65 and he was closely followed by Jack Harlen-Robertson (Lismore) who also had a great score of nett 68.

Nick Fuller (Grafton) was awarded the Tim Schaeffer Memorial Trophy for the best nett score by a player from the host club.  Nick’s score was equalled by Willow Harris and Courtney Fuller but Nick survived on a countback.
