Coffs Harbour Junior Girls Golf Camp February 2012

On the weekend of the 25th and the 26th of February Women’s Golf Central North Coast, with support from Jack Newton Junior Golf hosted the first of three proposed Golf Camps for junior girls in the region.

The camp was very successful, with 19 girls attending on Saturday and 16 girls on Sunday. The girls attending ranged in ages from 10 to 16 years. Ability levels varied with beginners interacting with more accomplished players with Golf Australia handicaps. A number of girls returned from previous camps, reacquainting old friendships and developing new skills. 7 girls attended the camp for the first time.

Two PGA coaches, Brendan Barnes and Matt Allen were in attendance and were assisted by local star Emma De Groot who was at home preparing to play on the LPGA Futures Tour. Emma is a Jack Newton Junior Golf graduate and represented NSW in the Australian Junior Teams Championships. After a successful U.S. college course, Emma heads off to the United States to embark on her first year as a professional golfer. Emma was named 2011 Southern Conference Golfer of the Year while playing for the University of Chattanooga.

Coaches worked on the range with the girls on many aspects of the game and the importance of good pre-shot routines. Short game skills were emphasised with Emma demonstrating various bunker shots. The afternoon session included a nine hole ambrose event which allowed the girls to put their new skills into play.

As in previous camps the highlight was the game of ten pin bowling by the players and parents. This continues to be very popular amongst the girls and parents with 32 attending.
