Guan and Kim Win Marathon Week of Golf

(6:00pm - Friday 10th January 2020)

Having won just about everything in Junior Golf except for a JNJG Major, 15 Year Old Jeffrey Guan (The Australian) has ticked another item off the bucket list with an incredible performance at the 2020 Harvey Norman Sydney Week of Golf. One of the toughest tournaments of the year on the JNJG Calendar, 90 Holes, five different courses, five consecutive days, Guan was superb throughout, breaking par on all five days to win by six shots from Harrison Glenday (The Lakes).

After opening with rounds of 70-70 at Twin Creeks and Castle Hill, two courses he'd never played, Guan took control of the tournament with three under par 68s at both Avondale and Bankstown to reach 10 under par, opening up a five shot lead heading into the final round. Muirfield's tight tree-lined fairways often catch out some of the states best players, but Guan mastered it also, picking up five birdies on Friday to cruise to his first JNJG Major.

Glenday impressed throughout the week also, breaking par on three of the five days to finish the tournament at six under par. A cold putter on Thursday at Bankstown is all that stopped the 17 year old contending for overall honours, finishing as Boys 16 Years and Over Champion. Harry Atkinson (Kurri Kurri) continued on his winning ways, taking out the Boys 13 Years Division by just one shot from Adam Derbas (Bankstown), whilst Toby Farrar (Lynwood) and Adam Ding (Bexley) picked up victories in the 12 Years and 11 Years & Under divisions respectively.

Whilst Guan was able to secure his first overall title, Yerin Kim (Strathfield) added her name to another JNJG Major Trophy in her final event as a junior. Turning 18 next Thursday, Kim signed off from the Junior ranks with another impressive performance, cruising to a seven shot victory in the Girls Division. A two under par 70 in the final round, the only player in the Girls Division to break par was more than enough to hold out the impressive Angelina Gong (Concord) and Ann Jang (Toukley).

Finishing second overall, Jang held out one of her major rivals and good friends Nara Shin (Lynwood) in the 12-14 Years Division, with Queensland visitor Godi Kim also impressive, taking out the 11 Years & Under Division by a whopping 24 shots. Mandy Szetu (Kogarah) was another standout for the week, finishing an incredible 43 under par in the Nett Division, dropping her handicap by some seven shots in the process.

Jack Newton Junior Golf would like to thank each of our host clubs, Twin Creeks, Castle Hill, Avondale, Bankstown and Muirfield for being involved in the tournament this year, as well as sponsors Harvey Norman and Srixon for their continued support of junior golf in New South Wales.

The 2020 Harvey Norman Sydney Week of Golf is set for a grandstand finish on Friday as the near 200 strong field of New South Wales best juniors head to Muirfield Golf Club for the final round.

Yerin Kim (Strathfield) has had her nose in front for most of the week, but the chasing pack won't go away with just four shots separating the top four players heading into the final round. Kim leads Angelina Gong (Concord) by three shots, with Ann Jang (Toukley) and Brielle Mapanao (The Australian) only one shot further back.

Jeffrey Guan (The Australian) is within sight of his first JNJG Major title, opening up a five shot lead on his rivals after the fourth round at Bankstown Golf Club. Guan, Glenday go Low at Avondale

(5:00pm - Wednesday 8th January 2020)

Jeffrey Guan (The Australian) and Harrison Glenday (The Lakes) have gone shot for shot throughout the third round of the 2020 Harvey Norman Sydney Week of Golf and finished the day in a share of the lead at seven under par.

Guan started the day with a two shot lead, plotting his way around the Avondale course to record his third straight under par round, this time a three under par 68. Whilst that would normally be enough to maintain or even extend the lead, no one told first round leader Glenday, with the 17 Year Old joining Guan at the top after a stunning five under par 66.

Taking advantage of the cool morning conditions, the boys shot three shots clear of Blake Phillips (Concord), the only other player under par for the tournament through 54 holes. The leading boys group will tee off at 1:10pm on Thursday.

It is a stacked Girls Leaderboard, with Yerin Kim (Strathfield) holding onto a narrow lead. One shot further back is Nara Shin (Lynwood), with Ann Jang (Toukley), Brielle Mapanao (The Australian) and Angelina Gong (Concord) tied for third only two off the lead.

Guan and Kim Lead Packed Leaderboard

(6:00pm - Tuesday 7th January 2020)

Jeffrey Guan (The Australian) and Yerin Kim (Strathfield) will take narrow leads into the third round of the 2020 Harvey Norman Sydney Week of Golf.

On a day where players were treated to the brand new Castle Hill design, Guan fired the low round of the day to move into the lead. The 15 Year Old started hot, picking up birdies on three of his opening four holes. But from then on, the putter went cold, with only one more birdie added on another steady day. Guan leads Harrison Glenday (The Lakes) by two shots, with Blake Phillips (Concord) a further two shots back.

Kim maintained her lead in the Girls Division, however it was cut to just one shot by a pair of impressive youngsters. 17 Year Old Kim, playing her final JNJG event before turning 18, leads 12 Year Old up-and-comers Nara Shin (Lynwood) and Ann Jang (Toukley) by the narrowest of margins. Angelina Gong flew up the leaderboard, recording the only under par round of the day in the Girls to move into fourth place, two shots further back.

Avondale will host the third round, with play beginning at 7:15am.

Glenday Storms to Lead at Twin Creeks

(5:00pm - Monday 6th January 2020)

Harrison Glenday (The Lakes) has stormed into the lead after a blistering back nine during the opening round of the 2020 Harvey Norman Sydney Week of Golf. After weeks of hot and dry weather, players were greeted to cool and overcast conditions on the opening day, with players taking advantage in the calm conditions.

It was Glenday who impressed the most, the 17 Year Old rallying with five back nine birdies to finish with a three under par 69. He leads Jeffrey Guan (The Australian) by one, Guan playing the back nine in three under par himself.

Yerin Kim (Strathfield) leads the Girls Division, finishing the opening round at one under par. In her final ever junior tournament before turning 18 next week, Kim made three birdies to offset two bogies on a difficult girls course, with a number of challengers close behind.

Play shifts to Castle Hill tomorrow, with the second round to get underway at 6:43am.

Nearly 200 players have registered to take part in the 2020 Harvey Norman Sydney Week of Golf, set to be played across Sydney next week.

The tournament will be the first event of the New Year on the JNJG Calendar, following the cancellation of the Harvey Norman A.C.T Week of Golf due to the poor air quality in Canberra as a result of the bushfires raging across Australia.

The tournament will be played on five of the best courses in Sydney, with Twin Creeks, Castle Hill, Avondale, Bankstown and Muirfield hosting the tournament this year.

The draw for the opening two rounds is now on the JNJG website, with play set to begin just before 7:00am on Monday.
