NSW Win 7th Straight State of Origin

The Jack Newton Junior Golf Team representing NSW has won the 2015 State of Origin, defeating the Junior Golf Foundation of Queensland by 18.5 matches to 11.5 matches at Newcastle Golf Club

Heading into the final round of single matches needing only four points to secure victory, NSW got off to a fast start and had one hand on the trophy after players had made the half way turn.

After going to the 18th hole in her first three matches, Belinda Ji made sure she got the job done early in her singles match against Caitlyn Campbell-Nyman, closing it out 6/4. Queensland needed a quick response and they got it through Quinnton Croker and Joy Mannix, who both went to the last hole in winning their matches. Croker secured a 1up victory over Jeff Fan, whilst Mannix hung on to beat the fast finishing Amber Thornton 2up.

That was as close as the Queenslanders got, with NSW closing out the series in brilliant fashion. Aidan Powter defeated Bailey Arnott 3/2, Amy Chu defeated Isabelle Simpson 7/6, and when Chris Fan closed out his match 4/3 against Zachary Maxwell, NSW were winners again. 14 year olds Amy Chu and Chris Fan were the standout players of the tournament, winning all four of their matches.

That wasn't the end of the wins for NSW, with 15 year olds Chloe Thornton and Jordie Garner winning their matches against Rhianna Lewis and Chris Jiminez. Thornton and Garner also impressed for the week, with three wins and one squared match over the four games. Celina Yuan added another point for NSW, finishing with back to back birdies to edge Karis Davidson 1up.

The Queenslanders didn't give up, and added some respectability to the scoreboard with Charlie Pilon defeating Jason Hong 5/3, Kate Law defeating Doey Choi 1up, and Doug Klein defeating Kevin Yuan 2/1.

NSW Close in on Victory

NSW are within touching distance of a 7th straight victory at the State of Origin, after winning the Tuesday morning foursomes by a score of four matches to two.

For the third straight match, 12 year old girls Belinda Ji and Caitlyn Campbell-Nyman went to the 18th hole, but it was NSW who claimed the victory on the final green, with Ji partnering 13 year old Amber Thornton to a one up victory. Queensland replied straight away in the 12 and 13 years boys division, with Quinnton Croker and Bailey Arnott defeating Jeff Fan and Aidan Powter 3/1.

NSW continued their dominance of the 14/15 years division, with Amy Chu and Chloe Thornton defeating Isabelle Simpson and Rhianna Lewis 3/2. Chris Fan and Jordie Garner made it 3-1 to NSW with a comprehensive 6/4 victory over Zachary Maxwell and Chris Jiminez. The NSW pair of Amy Chu and Chris Fan remain the only players in the competition who have won all three of their matches so far.

The 16/17 Years Matches couldn't have been more different on Tuesday morning from Monday afternoon's fourball, with NSW and Qld splitting the points. Celina Yuan and Doey Choi bounced back from defeat yesterday afternoon with an impressive 6/5 victory over Karis Davidson and Kate Law. The margin was the biggest of the tournament so far. After yesterday's birdie barrage, things slowed down for Jason Hong and Kevin Yuan, and the Queensland pair of Charlie Pilon and Doug Klein took advantage, winning 5/4.

The 4-2 result saw NSW stretch their lead, heading into the Afternoon Singles with a 11.5 to 6.5 matches lead.

NSW Dominate Afternoon Session

NSW have stormed back to take the lead at the 2015 State of Origin after an exciting afternoon of fourball matches.

Starting the afternoon with a one point deficit after Queensland led the morning mixed foursomes, a fast start was important for NSW and they got just that. At the turn, NSW led in four matches, Queensland leading in two matches.

Belinda Ji and Amber Thornton combined brilliantly to hang on to a 1up victory over Caitlyn Campbell-Nyman and Joy Mannix. The match was in the balance until the 18th hole, with the NSW securing the win after a clutch up and down on the final green. The 12 and 13 year old boys also won by the same scoreline, with Aidan Powter and Jeff Fan fighting back from three down against Quinnton Croker and Bailey Arnott at the turn to win on the 18th green.

NSW won another match after Amy Chu and Chloe Thornton closed out a 2/1 victory over Isabella Simpson and Rhianna Lewis. They had to come from behind, after Lewis started the round with an eagle two on the first hole! It quickly became 4-0 in the afternoon session as Chris Fan and Jordie Garner defeated Zach Maxwell and Chris Jiminez 3/2, with the NSW paid leading by as many as 5 holes on the back nine.

Queensland needed to bounce back, and found their first point of the afternoon session when Karis Davidson and Kate Law comprehensively defeated Celina Yuan and Doey Choi 3/2. The Queensland girls were never in trouble, and look a formidable pair heading into tomorrow's matches. Despite some impressive golf over the opening five matches, the best was yet to come in what will go down as the best match in JNJG State of Origin history.

NSW pair Kevin Yuan and Jason Hong turned two up after the front nine against Charlie Pilon and Doug Klein, after combining for 6 birdies in the opening 9 holes. They continued the hot form on the back nine, starting with four consecutive birdies. In most matches, four birdies in a row would extend a 2up lead, but the Queensland pair matched the boys with 3 birdies before Klein made an eagle on the Par 5 13th to claw back to one down. That was as close as they got, with some clutch putting from NSW helping them to a 1up advantage heading to the 18th. With Klein safely on the green and looking at a 10 foot birdie putt that would likely tie the match, Hong stepped up and made his own 30 footer for birdie, the 12th of the day for the NSW pair on the way to a one up victory. The NSW boys combined for 12 birdies alongside a lone bogey, whilst the Queenslanders had 8 birdies of their own and an eagle! The boys face off again tomorrow in the foursomes, before playing singles in the afternoon.

Queensland Lead After Mixed Foursomes

Queensland has taken a slender 3.5 - 2.5 lead at the 2015 State of Origin, narrowly edging out NSW in a close morning of Mixed Foursomes.

The standout pair were 13 Year Olds Joy Mannix and Bailey Arnott who flew out of the blocks to be 5up after only 7 holes! They registered the first point of the series for Queensland, closing out the match 3/2 against Amber Thornton and Aidan Powter. 1-0 quickly became 2-0 for Queensland, after 12 year olds Caitlyn Campbell-Nyman and Quinnton Croker won four of the last five holes to win their match against Belinda Ji and Jeff Fan on the 18th.

NSW answered back, with a brilliant back nine by Amy Chu and Chris Fan giving the JNJG team their first point of the tournament, a 3/2 victory over Isabelle Simpson and Zach Maxwell. The next match was a nail-biter, with neither team in the 15 years ever getting more than 1up. It was no surprise then that the match finished all square, with Chloe Thornton and Jordie Garner earning half a point against Rhianna Lewis and Chris Jiminez.

Queensland again stretched their lead, with Karis Davidson and Charlie Pilon proving too good for Celina Yuan and Jason Hong. The Queensland pair were 1up at the turn, stretching their advantage before closing out the match 3/2 on the 16th. That placed extra pressure on the 17 Years, with NSW desperately needing to claim the final match to stay in touch, and Doey Choi and Kevin Yuan responded well, a birdie on the 17th turning the match 1up in favour of NSW. After Queensland were conceded a par putt on the last, Choi was left with a 12 footer of her own for a par and the victory, and she knocked the putt in to cheers from the NSW fans.
