Windred Wraps Up Junior Career on Top While Yuan Continues her Winning Ways

Blake Windred has been an active member of JNJG for many years and ends his junior career on a massive high after being crowned the 2015 Srixon International Junior Boys Champion. Playing in his last junior tournament Blake fired a fantastic final round 70 to go with his previous rounds of 70, 64 and 69. Blake laid claim to the title with a total of 15 under par (273), 13 shots ahead of his nearest opponent.  The Newcastle local set a course record on Wednesday with a phenomenal 8 under par 64 which saw him take his place atop of the leader board, where he would remain.

It was tight race amongst the chasing pack with Western Australian’s Minwoo Lee and Fred Lee and Queenslander Lucas Higgins all battling it out for second place. All three finished tied in the runner up position on a total of 286 (-2).  Two shots further back were Cameron John (Victoria) and Isaac Noh (The Australian) tied for fifth place. It certainly was a strong field of talented young boys this year with 6 players all finishing the 72-hole event on even or better.

It was no different in the Girls divisions. Celina Yuan (The Australian) continued her winning ways taking out this year’s Overall Girls Championship.  She adds this to her Australian Junior Girls Amateur Championship and the Victorian Junior Girls Championship that she claimed last week. Yuan claimed the title after rounds of 73, 67, 70, 72 giving her a four round total of 282 (6 under par).  Yuan was the only female play to finish the week in the red.  Certainly a great achievement on what has been a fantastic year for the 16 year old. New Zealander Momoka Kobori came from two shots behind after round three to claim runner up over Western Australian Hira Naveed. Kobori finished on a total of 291 (3 over par) with Naveed a further shot back.

JNJG would like to thank host course Cypress Lakes for their assistance during the week.  It is the first time this event has been held here and it has certainly been a great success.

We would also like to congratulate all of the players who took part in the tournament this year.  We hope you enjoyed it and we look forward to seeing you all back here next year.  Thanks must also go to the parents and supporters, without you this event would not be possible.

Blake's Chance to go out With a Bang

17 Year Old Blake Windred is playing in his last ever junior tournament and on Thursday he set himself up to finish in style. The Newcastle local backed up his course record on Wednesday with a three under par 69 to stretch his lead to eight strokes heading into the final round. Windred was clutch down the stretch, picking up three birdies in the final six holes to increase his lead over Queenslanders Chris Park and Lucas Higgins. The pair shot up the leaderboard after rounds of 67 and 70 respectively and share second with Jordan Garner (Pennant Hills) who scrambled his way to an even par 72. Round One leader Matias Sanchez (Victoria) had an up and down round on Thursday, a double bogey and triple bogey thrown into his round of 75 which also included six birdies.

Celina Yuan has a chance to make it a The Australian Golf Club double by taking out the Girls Division. Yuan was tied with new Course Record holder Hira Naveed late in the third round, but a super finish, including birdies on both the 17th and 18th hole saw her clear out by four shots with a round to play. Naveed sits outright second, two clear of New Zealander Momoka Kobori who hung in all day during the third round, and was finally rewarded with birdies on 14, 17 and 18. Stefanie Hall moved into the final group with the low round of the day, matching Yuan's 70 with her own two under par round that included six birdies.

Course Records Tumble at Cypress Lakes

The Australian Golf Club members Blake Windred and Celina Yuan have shot to the top of the Leaderboard at the 2015 Srixon International thanks to two course records on Wednesday morning.

Windred started the day three shots off the pace, but stormed to the lead after an incredible bogey free 64 in round two. Starting on the 10th, the Newcastle local picked up three birdies in the first five holes, making the turn in only 33 strokes. A two putt birdie on the 1st put him into the outright lead but he wasn't finished there, picking up four birdies in his final fives holes to shoot eight under, and post 10 Under par for the tournament through the opening 36 holes. Windred leads overnight leader Matias Sanchez by three shots, after the Victorian backed up his opening round of 67 with a two under par 70 to sit outright second. Two shots further back is Jordan Garner (Pennant Hills) who shot into contention with four birdies in a row from the 4th hole. With a further 12 players currently under par for the tournament, the tournament is still well and truly up for grabs.

It wasn't only the boys who shot the lights out on day two, with Celina Yuan, paired in the same group as Windred, also firing a course record on day two. After an opening round 73, The Australian Golf Club member was quick to move in the right direction in the second round with three birdies in her first eight holes. Her round got even better on the first, when after laying up to a good yardage, holed her third shot for an eagle three to move to five under par through 10 holes. The only blemish of the day came at the par three 5th, before bouncing back with a birdie on the final hole to finish with a five under par 67 and the outright lead. Yuan's course record lasted about 5 hours, with West Australian Hira Naveed beating the new course record with her very own seven under par 65. Starting on the 10th, Naveed begun with an incredible five birdies in a row, before adding further birdies on the 17th and 1st to be seven under through 10 holes. The fierce storm, causing play to be suspended for 45 minutes halted her progress, but two bogey's were followed two birdies after the resumption to leave her solo second. The pair have broken away from overnight leaders Momoka Kobori (NZ) and Zara Woodbridge (Vic) who will play with the girls in the final group in Round Three.

Sanchez Leads Jam Packed Leaderboard

Matias Sanchez has broken away from a packed leaderboard to lead after the first day of the 2015 Srixon International at Cypress Lakes. The Victorian went bogey free in his opening round of 67, with birdies on the final two holes giving him a two shot lead over Newcastle local Jye Pickin. The 15 year old briefly took the clubhouse lead at minus three, one shot clear of a wall of players who started the tournament with two under par 70's. In total, 13 boys broke par on the opening day including New Zealander and NSW Junior Champion Henry Spring who opened with a one under par 71.

A name more famous for tennis than golf sits on top of the Girls Leaderboard, with Victorian Zara Woodbridge firing a one under par 71 to share the lead with New Zealander Momoka Kobori after the opening day of play. Starting on the 10th, Woodbridge only had one blemish on the card, a double bogey on the par 4 17th, which was quickly erased with three birdies on the bounce from the second. Kobori flew out of the blocks with four birdies in her opening six holes setting up her round, before becoming one of the many players who came unstuck at the difficult par four 12th.

Tournament Preview

We are just days away now from the start of the biggest major of the JNJG Tournament calendar.  Nearly 200 talented junior golfers will converge on Cypress Lakes Golf and Country Club on September 28th – October 2nd for the 2015 Srixon International Junior Classic.

The tournament is the brainchild of Australian golfing stalwart, Jack Newton, and provides a competitive environment for the most promising talent from right around the globe. The majority of the field will be made up of JNJG members, spanning every corner of New South Wales. Players are also coming from all over the country and as far abroad as Canada, New Zealand, America, Thailand, China, South Africa and Japan are making their way to the Hunter Valley to participate in the tournament.

The tournament is a permanent fixture on the junior golfing calendar and is proudly supported by major sponsor, Srixon.

“The Srixon International Junior Classic is an important stepping stone for many of Australia’s young golfers,” said tournament host and founder, Jack Newton.  “This event has been pivotal in founding the careers of Australia’s well-known international golfing stars providing them with a platform to make a successful transition into the senior ranks,” finished Newton.

Aaron Baddeley won the Jack Newton International in 1998, just two months prior to securing his first Australian Open victory. Aaron is a winner on the PGA tour and an enthusiastic supporter of junior golf

Other international superstars that have added the Jack Newton International Junior Classic in their list of achievements include Touring Professionals Steven Bowditch, Mathew Giles and Rick Kulacz along with LPGA Tour star Minjee Lee and Ladies European Tour Champions Nikki Garrett and Rebecca Artis and multiple Japanese Tour winners Brendan Jones and Nikki Campbell.  Successful world amateurs Ryan Ruffels and Shelly Shin are also amongst the winners from these Championships.

In the Overall Girls Championship 2015 Australian Girls Amateur Champion and recent Victorian Junior Girls Champion Celina Yuan goes in as the favourite to take out the title. Celina will have to contend with some tough competition in the form of fellow NSW junior Hannah Park (NSW), Western Australia’s Hira Naveed and Victorian Kono Matsumoto. There is a strong International contingent of players that will contest the title.  None more so than the girls from Thailand, who will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of their fellow countrywoman Kanyalak Preedasutthijit who was the Overall Junior Champion in 2014.

In the boys division, NSW/ACT’s hopes lie in the hands of Blake Windred (The Australian), and Josh Armstrong (The Lakes).  However these two will have a battle on their hands against the strength of the Interstate and International players. Some of Queensland’s finest will be amongst the key contenders for the title. Tom Harvey and Charlie Pilon will all be making the trek south for the event in the hopes of taking the illustrious title back to Queensland.  The contingent from Victoria will be coming up to make their mark on the field with their representatives; Matias Sanchez and Cameron John. Cameron comes off a win earlier this week in the Victorian Junior Boys Championship.  Western Australians Fred Lee and Minwoo Lee (brother of Aussie talent Minjee Lee) will have their eyes firmly set on the Championship.  New Zealander Henry Spring is also a strong contender after taking out the NSW Junior Boys Championship in Wollongong earlier this year. He will be looking to take his second lot of silverware back across the ditch.

JNJG would like to wish all juniors the best of luck for the week ahead. Lets hope the weather is great for a wonderful week of junior golf in the Hunter Valley.
