Port Macquarie Golf Camp September 2016

On the weekend of the 10-11th September Womens Golf Central North Coast hosted its second camp for junior girls in the region to develop their golf games.

Seventeen girls booked in to attend the Port Macquarie camp; however two withdrew due to illness on the Saturday leaving 15 girls for the weekend. It was great to see a small group of girls travel from North Sydney again. Thank you to JNJG for supporting their attendance, and Michael and Joan Flaherty who travelled with the girls for the weekend.

Ray Robbins, JNJG Territory Manager, kindly assisted Brendan Barnes (Sawtell) with coaching on the Saturday.

The morning session consisted of a light warm up and introduction from the girls, the girls then split into two groups. Ray’s group concentrated on their short game, practicing skills and learning chipping techniques and bunker practice. Whilst Brendan’s group concentrated on using their longer irons with accuracy and the importance of alignment.

After lunch the girls headed back to the putting area were they had tuition on putting technique, alignment, reading greens and games based practice for distance control.

Brendan and Ray then took the girls out onto the course to practice shot selection and scoring in preparation for the tournament the next day.

Our night activity was organised at Port’s local indoor rock climbing and laser tag centre. This was fantastic and all the girls appeared to really enjoy the evening and interacted well together.

Sunday morning we again gathered at Port Macquarie Golf Club for breakfast prior to participating in their tournament.

We had an extra 5 girls join us on the Sunday morning, we had eleven girls play in the 18 hole competition, four girls in the 9 hole competition and five girls in the 4 hole competition. Everyone enjoyed the tournament with plenty of support and prizes for all participants.

Again the camp would not run successfully without the commitment of WGCNC, JNJG, Brendan Barnes and Ray Robbins, for which the girls and their parents are very grateful.

I would also like to thank Port Macquarie Golf Club, especially Chris Farrell for their assistance in organising this camp.

I look forward to our next camp organised for the 26-27th November 2016 at Sawtell.
