2016 Mollymook Junior Open

The Mollymook Junior open was held at the Mollymook Golf Club on 10th July on a very wet and soggy golf course. The great news on the day was the fact that there were blue skies above so the juniors only had to contend with a wet course under their feet.  Most of the competitors had just returned from the shortened State Championship that was also affected by the rain, so they were up for the challenge.

The 38 starters arrived filled with nerves as well as excitement. The juniors were greeted on the first tee by the club Captain Michael McCormack and President of the Mollymook Veterans Lauri Hays who handed each player a golf ball, explained the changes in playing conditions and wished the players good luck for the day before sending them on their way.

The first couple of groups out were showing just how hard the Mollymook layout could be, especially when the course is wet and there was not much run. There were some very high scores early on in the day but the players were able to steady the ship as they warmed into their rounds.  In the later groups the length of the tee shots were proving to be a big advantage.

The players were given lunch and a drink on the turn to keep them going. There were mixed emotions at the half way mark with some happy players and some unhappy faces depending on how their day was looking.

At the end of the event some fantastic scores were returned. The best score on the day went to Hannah Park from the NSW Golf Club with a fantastic round of 74. The best score from the boys division went to Luke Taylor from the Gerringong Golf Course with 77. It was great to see Luke bounce back after a slightly disappointing State Championship to get the win and gain some confidence for the rest of the year.
