IAS Golf Program Nominations

Established in 1985 and the pioneer for the Regional Academy model in Australian sport, the Illawarra Academy of Sport, with the support of our many partners, provides athletes with the programs to develop, excel and achieve through sport while maintaining strong community ties —this in turn produces young ambassadors for the Illawarra community, the Illawarra Academy of Sport and their valued partners.

The Illawarra has a rich history in developing and elevating athletes to higher representative honours, with the Academy a significant vehicle in the process. Over three decades, the IAS has supported more than 5000 young people from across the region in their pursuit of sporting excellence.

The Illawarra Academy of Sport provides localised training and education opportunities for talented young athletes, coaches and administrators across the Illawarra region. It is the Academy’s mission to “assist and provide opportunities for young talented local athletes to achieve excellence in sport”.

Graduating athletes from the IAS include Golfers Lincoln Tighe, Travis Smyth and Jordan Zunic, Australian Test Cricketers Brett Lee, Shane Lee and Phil Jaques, World Surfing Champions Sally Fitzgibbons and Michael Lowe, , Olympians David Smith, Ryan Gregson, David McKeon, Emma McKeon, Jarrod Poort, Madeline Hills (nee Heiner) and Zoe Upton and Paralympians Siobhan Paton, Megan Newell and Brett Stibners, Australian National Team Representatives Keiran Govers, Blake Govers, Tristan White and Flynn Ogilvie (Kookaburras), Grace Stewart (Hockeyroos),

 and many more.....

In 2017 the IAS will once again provide sporting scholarships to more than 170 athletes across ten (10) sporting programs includingBasketball, Cricket, Cycling, Golf, Lawn Bowls, Hockey, Netball, Rugby Sevens, Tenpin Bowling and Triathlon, as well as two (2) individual athlete programs including the LoneStar Program and Athletes with a Disability.

The IAS Scholarship Program consists of sports specific skill development through elite coaching, physical development through musculoskeletal screenings and athletic movement programs as well as performance competition. This is supported by an educational curriculum for the holistic development of the athlete to prepare them for a professional sporting career.

The Academy works closely with Jack Newton Junior Golf, Golf NSW and Golf Illawarra to ensure our programs are fully endorsed and provide integrated development opportunities for talented athletes.
