Ocean Shores Junior Open Golf Day - Sunday March 6th 2016

Over 100 players converged on Ocean Shores Country Club last Sunday for the NRDGA/Greg Norman Masters Junior Open day.

A field of 19 boys and 6 girls led off the “9 Hole Tyro” field on a tough layout.  For the second time in three years, Ethan Walker (Coraki) was the leading boy in the gross event with a fantastic score of 42 shots.  However, Ethan only secured the win after a count-back from Jack Ross (CTH).  The 9 Hole Boys Nett competition was also won with a fantastic score – nett 23 by Cameron Harlen-Robertson (Lismore).  Runner-up in the Boys Nett division was Sean Sowell (Yamba).

Not far behind the 9 hole boys scores was Holly Fuller (Grafton) who shot 48 to win the girls division.  Elly Petersen (CTH) carded the best nett score with a great round of 27.

The biggest field of the day was brought together for the 18 hole Junior Boys Championship.  The dual attraction of this event at Ocean Shores was the chance to qualify for the Greg Norman Junior Masters event at the end of 2016 as well as being the second event in the NRDGA Order of Merit Series for 2016.  The best score of the day was recorded by (scratch marker) Tyler Duncan (Redcliffe) with a 1 under par 71.  Tyler’s round was just good enough to hold off Riley Taylor (Casino) by 1 shot and Josh Capes (Emerald Lakes) with another great round of 73.  The Junior Boys Nett Division was won by Shaun Beazleigh (Kilcoy) with a great score of 67 nett.  Runner-up in the Junior Boys Nett competition was Jordan Hampson (Riverlakes) a further shot back.  The most amazing thing about the Junior Boys field was the fact that 32 boys out of the field of 67 were off single figure handicaps – now that’ a quality field.

However, perhaps the best result of the day was turned in by a competitor playing Ocean Shores for the first time.  In the 18 hole Junior Girls Division, Courtney Fuller (Grafton) led the field with a great score of 74 off the stick.  Courtney plays off a handicap of 6 and this was one of the better rounds in her short career.  Kim Karen (Lakelands) was next best with a round of 76.  The Junior Girls nett division was won by Momo Suglyama (Royal Pines) by a single shot from Karen Kim (Palm Meadows).

Our next event is at Iluka on Sunday March 13th.  I look forward to seeing you there.
