Monday 18th March saw 37 high school students competing in the Western Area Secondary School Association Stroke Play Championships and JNJG Newton Shield held at Wentworth Golf Club Orange.   There were also 26 juniors who took part in a golf clinic followed by a two person nine hole Ambrose event.

Students travelled from Bourke, Cobar, Tottenham, Trundle, Forbes, Bathurst, Cowra, Condobolin, Manildra, Canowindra, Lithgow, Rylstone, Kandos, Dundeoo, Mudgee and local high schools in Orange. It was pleasing to see a number of Western Region Academy of Sport and Far Western Academy of Sport Junior Squad members as well as juniors who have come through the JNJG Primary MYGolf School Golf Program in the draw.

Western Area Golf Convenor and Teacher at Canobolas, Mark Skein, did a great job in organizing the event which included an hour coaching clinic for the non-handicap players. With the support of the two local resident golf professionals; Todd Iffland and Todd Brackenridge, JNJG Officer, Sharon Nott and Wentworth Golf Club staff and members the day proved very successful.

For the first time in many years there was a play off to decide the winner for the main event. Dayne Gardiner (Dubbo) was successful in a sudden death match against Scott Matheson (Bathurst).  The girl’s event was taken out by Laura Cummings (Cowra).

Central Western Daily newspaper and Prime TV were able to capture the atmosphere and with the added non-handicap Ambrose event all students got the opportunity to grace the fairways and play those magical shots.

It is hoped that the event will continue to grow as junior golf expands in the school and club environment. It was great to hear a few students saying they were now going to start coming along to regular coaching classes held on a Sunday with Todd Iffland at Wentworth Golf Club.

Congratulations goes to all the player’s and the parents and grandparents who got the kids to the course Sharon heard reports that  the trip back to Bourke took  seven hours because of the “roo’s” on the road - you have to love playing the game!
