Braidwood Juniors Enjoy Coaching with Wayne Grady

The 1990 PGA Champion travelled to Braidwood, NSW for the Wayne Grady Gala Dinner and Golf Day.  The day was organised by the Braidwood golfing community and Wayne was accompanied by fellow PGA Professional, Greg Honen of Killara Golf Club.  The local golfing community were certainly honoured with their presence.

The golf course was in pristine condition with thanks to Mr Les Mundy, Mr Murray Smith, and a long line of volunteer members of the golf club.  The course survives with the services of a green keeper two days a week.  Volunteers undertake the remaining work.

During the morning Wayne and Greg conducted a golf clinic of which 9 very enthusiastic young boys sat attentively, picking up tips of the game.  Each had an opportunity for Wayne to check over their swing, offering coaching advice.

Wayne and Greg’s visit occurred at an opportune moment in the boy’s golf development.  For the past 3 months this group of juniors have been learning golf through the Golf Australia MyGolf program initiated by Braidwood Golf Club member, Mr Rod Coady.  Rod’s program has attracted the support of the Central Southern Golf Association (CSGA) and Jack Newton Junior Golf (JNJG) who have assisted with supplementary coaching and equipment.

After a well-earned lunch, local junior, Romney Smith and Club Champion, Michael Toikens played an exhibition round of golf with the Greats.  Michael teamed up with Wayne, and Romney teamed up with Greg, just to add a little friendly competition to the event.  A large gallery walked with them to see how the Champion would play the tricky little Braidwood course.  Wayne received plenty of encouraging advice from 11 year old, Oliver Allchin during the round.

The Gala Day continued into the evening with a dinner in the Servicemen’s Club Hall.  What a day for Braidwood!
