Kyogle Junior Open

On a wet and uncomfortable day in the Kyogle Shire, Maddie Trew (Murwillumbah) showed all the boys how to play great golf in difficult conditions.  Maddie’s score of 75 was 6 shots better than any of the boys could record, so she was the worthy winner of the Kyogle “Green Jacket.”  Players from Ballina, Byron Bay, Casino, Lismore, Murwillumbah, Ocean Shores, Yamba, Coolangatta-Tweed Heads and the home club enjoyed the hospitality and a golf course in great shape after the recently completed club championships.  Maddie’s score in the Junior Girls event was good enough to hold off Eleka Moore (Ballina) and Ashlee Selwood (Murwillumbah).

The Junior Boys division was taken out by Alex Hunt (Murwillumbah) on a day when patience with the weather was just as important as keeping a double bogey off the card.  Alex’s score was 2 better than Riley King (Murwillumbah) with another couple of shots covering the fast improving Jack Soley (Murwillumbah) and Isaac Outridge (CTH).  The Junior Boys nett prize was won by Jack Soley with a remarkable score of 63.

The 9 hole Tyro players had a good field of 15 players with the boys division again taken out by young Tyrelle Roberts (Casino).  Tyrelle finished a single shot ahead of Brandon Yee (Lismore).  The 9 hole gross order of merit competition now looks to be a two horse race between Tyrelle and Connor Whitelock (Byron Bay).  A three-way tie in the 9-hole boys nett division saw Charlie Dean (Ocean Shores) take home the biscuits ahead of Mali Loomes (Ocean Shores) and Kan Whitelock (Byron Bay).  Jenna Carter (Yamba) was too good for her playing partners in the 9-hole girls division holding off Emily Yee (Lismore) and Ty Mitchell (Murwillumbah).

Six players also participated in the 5-hole Tyro division and we hope to see all of these young players returning to play at many NRDGA events in the future.

Once again our thanks to the Kyogle Golf Club, the volunteers including the sausage sizzle team and all of the other members who helped make the day such a success.  For further information on Junior Golf in the Northern Rivers District, please call Gerard Wilkinson on (mobile) 0419 708 676.
