Day 3 Update
Day three of the Suburu State Age Championships. Like the first two days the players will have to battle extremely strong winds.
The wind and tough greens are getting the better of most players today with everyone over par through 9 holes. It is a matter of holding on today and not slipping backwards rather than charging up the leaderboard.
In the boys event Jake Higginbottom had a day he would rather forget however, he still holds a ten shot lead going into the final. In second place is Roland Krelle.
In the girls event Shelly Shin has held on to her overnight lead. She has a host of players hot on her tail. Shelly sits in the lead by three shots from a group of four girls just three shots back. With 5 girls within 5 shots it is going to be a very interesting final day.
In the NSW Champion of Champions Ryan Bown (Ryde Parramatta) and Michaela Scheetz (NSW) have claimed the 2011 titles.

Sydney hosts Australia’s Largest Junior Golf Tournament
The most talented junior golfers in NSW and the ACT will converge on some of the most prestigious courses in Sydney from 4 – 8 July 2011 for Australia’s largest junior golfing tournament. As part of Jack Newton Junior Golf’s 25th birthday celebrations this prestigious event will be held in Sydney for the first time ever. This year the Terrey Hills Country Club, The Lakes Golf Club, The Concord Golf Club and The Australian Golf Club will host the event.
The prestigious Subaru State Age Championships is the brainchild of Australian golfing stalwart, Jack Newton, and provides a competitive environment for a field of the best 275 aspiring junior golfers from all four corners of New South Wales and the ACT.
“The Subaru State Age Championships is one of Jack Newton Junior Golf’s marquis events and I am delighted for our greatest junior talent to be on display on the some of the best golf courses in Australia,” said tournament host and founder, Jack Newton.
“The Championships has been an important stepping stone for many of this state’s most celebrated golfers over the years and that certainly puts things in perspective for our aspiring juniors hoping to make a successful transition into the senior ranks,” finished Newton. With the recent results in the US Masters and US Open golf is quickly becoming a game that is dominated by the youth. There is no doubt that some of the talent on show during the championships will be world beaters in years to come.
International superstars who have honed their skills in the State Age Championships include 2003 US Amateur Championship winner and former USPGA Tour competitor Nick Flanagan, multiple Japanese Tour winner Brendan Jones, Nikki Garrett and James Nitties.
The tournament commences on Monday July 4, concluding 72 holes later on Friday July 8 when 13 Subaru State Age Champions are crowned. Seven boys and six girls in the following age groups - 12 years and under, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18 years will hold the title for 12 months.
The event is a stroke play tournament with competitors playing 18 holes at the Terrey Hills Country Club and the Lakes Golf Club over the opening two days followed by a cut in each age group after 36 holes. Just over the top 40% in each age group will compete for the Subaru State Age Championship Cup at the Australian Golf Club while the remainder of the field will contest the Subaru State Age Championship Plate at the Concord Golf Club.
Players must qualify for the event through local and regional competitions with over a thousand junior boys and girls across NSW vying for a position in the field.
Jack Newton Junior Golf Chairman, Jack Newton, who was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2007 for his service to junior golf and diabetes will be in attendance lending his support to all the competitors as they attempt to win one of the most sought after titles in junior golf.
The tournament favourite in the boy’s division is undoubtedly Jake Higginbottom. Jake is a member of the Australian Golf Club but hails from the Newcastle region. Jake has had a stellar past couple of months, winning in the QLD Amateur, Keperra Bowl (both senior events), Handa Junior Masters and finished second in the Thunderbird International Junior in Scottsdale Arizona. Other notable mentions in the boys division include Jarrod Freeman from the Concord Golf Club. Jarrod comes from a golfing family with Uncle and mentor Paul Gow encouraging him all the way.
Also in the field for the week is Zac Stolz and Ryan Parry who are sons of Australian golfing greats Andre Stoltz and Craig Parry. Both boys are up and coming players within Jack Newton Junior Golf and will be real contenders for their respective age group titles.
The girls’ event which incorporates the Golf NSW Junior Girls Championship is the most open it has been for many years. The favourite for the event Cathleen Santoso of The Lakes Golf Club will be looking to win this prestigious championships after having a stellar year, winning the Australian Junior and being selected to represent Australia at the Astor Trophy in England. Hot on her heels will be a group of girls including state junior team members Chantal Hodson and Tahnia Ravnjak both from The Australian Golf Club.
The event is run along similar lines to a professional tournament – caddies in caddy bibs, scorer’s huts and major scoreboards are used and special guest Jack Newton announces the tee on the final day.
Premium car maker Subaru is the major sponsor of the event and have been proudly supporting junior golf since 2007.
Acushnet Golf Australia has continued its’ relationship with Jack Newton Junior Golf and will once again be the official product sponsor of the event. Players will be playing for great prizes from their popular Titleist and Footjoy brands.
