Yowani Advances
On Sunday 21 September Yowani Country Club hosted the Southern New South Wales area Encourage Shield play off between Howlong and Yowani.
Howlong travelled up on Saturday morning for a practice round on the course. It was a very social event, golf in the afternoon with juniors, team managers and parents, then afterwards a BBQ with Hawthorn’s tight win over Port Adelaide on the TV. This was perfect preparation for the big match on Sunday.
Sunday morning began with overcast weather and some keen players and caddies waiting at the first tee for their chance to hit off. The teams were as follows:
Yowani Howlong
Riley Okines 7 Liam Glansolon 3
Tom O’Rourke 9 Jake Eisenhauer 4
Matt Clifton 10 Max Barraclough 24
Fraser Miller 25 Darren Bush 27
Brett Murray 34 James Walker 33
Ryan Canonon 34 Nick Baker 35
Taylah Ellems 36 Oscar 36
Most of the matches were quite close, three of them going to at least the 16th. Howlong quickly became familiar with the speed of the greens and were applying significant pressure on Yowani with their chipping game.
Congratulations to Yowani who were very proud victors in the end.
Appreciation goes to the organisers from each club Ken Norris and Ken Walton, team managers Geoff Heffernan and Janet, players and caddies, who without them the event would not have been as successful as it was. Friendships have been made and next year, regardless of whether each team wins their respective DGA Encourage Shield, the Yowani team will travel to Howlong for a challenge match.
Yowani now progress in the NSW State Series and play off against the Moruya team from Far South Coast. The victors will reach the State Finals to be played at Newcastle Golf Club in January 2015 with all travel, meals and accommodation sponsored by JNJG. Good golfing to both teams.
