Russell Vale Come and Try Day

The weather was perfect and it was smiles all round on the faces of the kids at the Come and Try Golf Day at Russell Vale Golf Club.

“It’s awesome to see so many kids out here enjoying it,” Russell Vale’s Head Professional Tyson Beswick said. “It’s a really good turn out.”

Around 50 children turned up for the day and they got to sample a bit of everything from chipping and putting to hitting shots as Golf Month kicked into gear.

The Illawarra based club saw the opportunity to run the day as part of the national initiative and is hopeful it will boost the club's junior numbers.

“We want to start growing our junior program and develop the base up a bit. We’re doing everything we can to get children into the game, and to see this many turn up today makes us very happy,” Beswick said.

Anthea Gostt of Wollongong brought her three children along for the day. She has played a bit of golf before and believes it’s an ideal sport for children to learn and have fun.

“It’s a nice sport to learn at an early age, it’s a sport that you can play for a long time, and you’re outside walking in the natural environment which I love,” she said.

Ms Gostt was thrilled with how well run the day was and how much her children were enjoying themselves.

“The kids have really enjoyed it, they’ve done some putting and chipping, they haven’t hesitated at all, it’s been a great idea,” she added. "And my five-year-old is quite enjoying the hitting.”

She feels golf is something they could enjoy and do as a family.

“My husband loves golf. He played with his brothers growing up, so it’s something we can do as a family as well," she said.
