Juniors Try Golf

Hunter River District Golf Association (HRDGA) in partnership with Jack Newton Junior Golf held a Junior Open Day at Singleton Golf Club during March.

HRDGA provided opportunities for juniors to experience golf at one of their affiliated clubs while JNJG provided the interactive sessions during the morning.  “Success of these types of events comes down to local club promotion and you never really know how the day will turn out until it’s done,” said Mark Ingrey, JNJG.

Some 30 juniors from surrounding areas attended the morning with each participating in MyGolf type sessions including Mini Golf, Chipping, Target Golf, Long Game and two modified holes before finishing with a adult dressed in a Velcro suit, BBQ and drinks.

“We must try things and see how they go, we don’t expect huge numbers but little steps in the right direction will help.  Today turned out well and all the kids enjoyed the experience, the hard work is having them return for future clinics and hopefully they will take up the game regularly,” said David Parkinson, HRDGA.

Singleton Golf Club has recently had ten members volunteer and undertake Community Coach training.  They have now formed the Singleton Junior Golf Committee and will follow-up with contact of the junior attendees to encourage their return to the mid-week or weekend clinics being held at the club.

“Today was a great example of partnerships.  Hunter River DGA wanted to hold the day, we (JNJG) provided the activities and equipment, Singleton Golf Club provided the venue, volunteers and future development opportunities.  In all we hope to see this type of partnership work across the state as it certainly helps provide a positive future for junior golf,” said Mark
