Gunnedah Junior Open Day – August 7th, 2016

After quite a break since the previous NIOOM tournament, it was pleasing to see a record number of entries at the Gunnedah Junior Open Day.  The Gunnedah Golf Club has a new PGA Professional helping out (Luke Ryan) and along with his wife Ellie, they were able to encourage over half of the 44 participants from the local Gunnedah area.  In particular, a field of 15 in the Tyro 4 hole competition was a great sign for Junior Golf in the District.

Players from Coonabarabran, Moree, Tamworth, Narrabri, Longyard, Armidale, Inverell and the host club converged on a course rated by many as one of the better layouts in the North West.  The greens were fast and the fairways tight but an enjoyable day was had by all participants.

In the Junior Boys division, a new player to the NIOOM competition, Mitchell Bourne was successful after a playoff with Jock McPherson (Tamworth).  Josh Wilson (Narrabri) also had a good round to finish 3rd in the gross event.  The course must have been the winner on the day as only Kobe Harris (Gunnedah) and Sam Elphick (Gunnedah) were able to play better than their handicap.  Kobe took out the nett event with a great score of 66.

The Junior Girls division was again only a small field with Breanna Purse (Moree) taking home the gross prize from Annabelle Abrahamsen (Moree).  Annabelle has reduced her handicap by 4 shots since the start of the year and continues the upward path with her golf.

The Cadet Boys 9 hole event was again hotly contested by a field of 10 players.  The winner was Harry Milford (Coonabarabran) with a great score of 55 closely followed by Luke Devney (Moree).

The next event in the Northern Inland Order of Merit Series will be held at Uralla on Sunday August 21st.  We look forward to seeing you there.
