Iluka Junior Classic - Sunday 8th March

The Iluka Junior Classic has recently been one of the most popular events on the NRDGA Order of Merit Circuit.  In 2015 we welcomed a new Junior Coordinator at Iluka, Mark Adey, a PGA representative recently arrived from South West Rocks.  We had visitors from Ballina, Byron Bay, Casino, Murwillumbah, Ocean Shores, Grafton, Yamba, Woolgoolga, Kyogle, Coolangatta-Tweed Heads and Lismore as well as the host club.

This year’s event produced an inaugural winner of an NRDGA Junior Boys Open event, Riley King from Murwillumbah.  Riley has been working hard on his game and the effort bore fruit with a great score of 71 (1 over par).  The Wright brother from Yamba played well to fill the minor placings along with another good (better than handicap) round from Jack Harlen-Robertson (Lismore).  The junior boys nett prize was won by Tyler Glavocih (Ballina).  This was Tyler’s first full handicap round in an NRDGA event and signs are that he is carrying on the family tradition of producing good golfers.  Apart from the players mentioned above, Nick Sneesby (Murwillumbah) and Cameron Larkin (Murwillumbah) also played to their handicaps.

Maddie Trew (Murwillumbah) recorded a great score of 72 (for the second consecutive year) to win the junior girls division.  Eleka Moore (Ballina), recently returned from the Riversdale Cup in Victoria, was runner up in the gross event.  Ashlee Selwood (Murwillumbah) took out the junior girls nett division closely followed by Courtney Fuller (Grafton).

The cadet boys division gross event was won by Tyrelle Roberts (Casino) with a great score of 43.  Tyrelle just held off the fast-improving Connor Whitelock (Byron Bay) by a couple of shots.  The cadet boys nett division was won by Cass Barnes (Murwillumbah) with a fantastic score of 24.  It was a tight contest in this event with Danny Mackenzie (Ballina) and Charlie Dean (Ocean Shores) also playing better than his handicap.

The cadet girls division was graced by four girls and the winner of the gross event was Emily Martin (Murwillumbah) closely followed by Holly Fuller (Grafton).  The nett event was won by a newcomer, Madisson McKee on a count back from Jenna Carter (Yamba).

A sensational turnout of 23 golfers also participated in the Iluka Junior Classic 5 hole Tyro event.  Two years ago, Iluka Junior Golf was started from scratch.  In this year’s event, many of the starters in the Tyro event were Iluka locals, a sure sign that the trend is in the right direction and the hard work is paying off.

Our sincere thanks to the Iluka Junior Co-ordinator, Mark Adey and his family, for a great day out.
