Shelly Beach Claim Junior Pennant Championship
Joint hosts of the NSW State Junior Championships had their chance to battle it out against each other in the recent Central Coast Junior Pennant Final in early April.
What was actually a close match on the day through the middle ranks, was won by Shelly Beach 4.5 to 1.5 over Toukley and decided with a playoff on the 19th hole.
With Jordie Garner turning 18 next month and so much big game tournament experience, he lead his team to victory with a convincing 4/3 win to finish off 7 years of Junior Pennant representative honours on the Central Coast. With all his worldwide/state experience as schoolboy Captain and being the gentleman he is, Jordie has taken the time and enjoyed giving back to his younger teammates and has mentored players such as Riley Millers from Shelly Beach/Gosford Golf Club in all areas of the game.
Riley who turned 11 during the pennant season played number 6 for a 5/4 win in the final and was the book end to Jordie at number 1. As a Shelly Beach Cadet – turned Junior, Riley is the youngest ever player to represent the club in Junior Pennants. But hats must go off to local rising star Jimmy Linnet who sunk a knee knocker of a putt to win the playoff and the match for Shelly Beach on the 19th. Whilst the quiet achiever of the match, and series Captain, was Liam Gocher, with a convincing 7/6 win to set up Shelly with a 3-0 lead prior to the playoff.
Other special mention’s for the valiant efforts to get Shelly to the final were Jake Kable. He had an unbelievable junior pennant series where he was undefeated going into the final. It was Toukley’s star Anika Boyd that ended that run beating Kable although he put in a valiant effort after giving her 7 shots. Cooper Hetherington finished square in the final against Keagan Phillips, also in the side was Jye Crowe who was away for the final, he was undefeated this year. Lochie Allison played one match for one win after losing a massive 16 shots during the recent Encourage Shield and Junior Pennant Series.
In recent months Shelly Beach Golf Club continue to be rewarded for the effort and encouragement they put into their Cadet – Junior Golf Program winning JNJG Club of the Year, winners of the Central Coast Junior Pennant final and Runners Up in the State Encourage Shield final.
With Corey & Kieran Jones turning 18 last year and Jordie leaving the Junior ranks come May, the next generation of Shelly Beach juniors are in very good shape with both the Jones’ and Garner up at the club most days practicing and giving back to the young golfers wanting to learn everything about the game. Putting and chipping comps, poison putting challenges, spinning trick shots out of the bunkers, two-man team match play for pick of the fridge and mystery holes is what brings all the juniors together.
All this time practicing and having fun definitely proved the difference for the close Shelly Beach team. All players in Shelly and Toukley know each other’s games so well with their involvement in the Central Coast Academy of Sport Golf Program and will now team up together to make up the majority of the team members representing the Central Coast Golf Academy in the 2017 NSW Academy Games.
