Victorian Boys and Girls Championship Recap

What a fantastic week we had in Melbourne for the 2016 Victorian Boys and Girls Championships.  We had the opportunity to play four rounds at one of the best courses in Victoria; Yarra Yarra. This course requires a variety of accurate shots if you are to get out unscathed. As was noticeable from the lack of rounds under par it was very difficult to finish without at least one high score during the round.

All four JNJG players did a fantastic job over the four rounds especially without the opportunity to see the course before they had to tackle it.

June Song had the best result finishing with scores of 77,76,78,and ended up as  the only girl with an under par round on the final day with a 71 to finish runner up in the Under 16’s and 4th overall. What a fantastic effort for a 14 year old to mix it with the best juniors from across the country. “If only I had made paron the last I would have been in a playoff, thanks for a mint week team,” June said.

Fellow JNJG team member Belinda Ji had rounds of 80, 79,79,81 to finish in 8th position in the Under 16’s and in 14th overall. Belinda said, “this was one of the best weeks and it was so much fun going with the team. Even though my golf wasn’t too good, it was a great experience playing at Melbourne’s Sand Belt. Also thanks to our team manager Luke for everything and all the laughs.”

The boys also had a great week and were led by Jackson Hall who had rounds of 80, 71, 80, 76 to finish in a tie for 2nd position in his age group and in 15th position overall. Jackson was quoted on the driving range during our first practice session of saying “gee it is sandy.” Jackson also said “what a fantastic experience getting to play on a golf course like this.”

Brad Doherty started very strong on day one and slowly faded with scores of 74,78,79,83 to finish in 25th overall and with this to say, “Melbourne’s sand belt is an experience.  Windy, cold, sandy, and undulating conditions prove a test for all golfers. It was a fun and a great learning experience for me and this has opened my eyes for new and creative shots.”

The team travelled home Saturday and some of the players headed straight the Southern Highlands for this years Fayde Match Play Championships.  They will then head to the Hunter Valley for the Srixon International the following week. I am sure this experience will help them to continue their great play over the coming weeks.
