Taylor and Trew win at Murwillumbah

The Jeb Hunter Memorial Classic is held each year at the Murwillumbah Golf Club in memory of a junior club member tragically killed in an accident a few years ago.  This event is important to the Junior and Cadet members at “Murbah” and 15 players from the host club participated in their home event.  Visitors from Ballina, Casino, Coolangatta-Tweed Heads, Lismore, Kyogle, Ocean Shores, Rachel Hetherington Golf Range, Yamba and Iluka were also welcomed.

By far the biggest field of the day was the 9-hole Cadet event, with 25 boys and 4 girls participating.  Included in this field were 12 new players to the NRDGA circuit and we were excited to see these new faces.  Consistent local player, Nicholas Sneesby, won the cadet boy’s gross event.  Nick has participated in the majority of the OOM events this year and had a great score of 44 shots on his home track.  Other good scores were recorded by good mates from Cooly Tweed, Isaac Outridge and Lewis Boulter, both shooting 46 off the stick.  The cadet boy’s nett event was won by one of our new players, Jack Ross from Coolangatta-Tweed Heads. Jack’s nett score of 28 is likely to get the handicapper’s attention before the next event.  Other players performing better than their handicaps included Jack Gracie (Murwillumbah), Brandon Yee (Lismore), Darcy Nankevill (RHGR), Eli Cambell (Ballina) and Kaleb Hughes (CTH).  Grace Matthews (CTH) won the cadet girl’s event from runner-up Emily Yee (Lismore).  The nett event winner was Emily Martin (M’bah) from Jenna Carter (Yamba).

We had a great field of 12 in the 5-hole event and ALL of these players were rewarded for their skills with a “pick of the table” prize.  Again, I think the number of parents/carers far exceeded the number of participants but I believe that the social atmosphere surrounding this activity meant that the exercise of walking with the children was generating all those important endorphins.

The main events of the day were the Boys and Girls Junior Opens.  The winner of the Junior Boys event, with a great score of 74 was Riley Taylor from Casino.  Riley has played consistently during 2014 and leads the NRDGA OOM series by a considerable margin.  Alex Hunt and Lucas Higgins from Murwillumbah also had good rounds.  The Junior Boys nett event was a bit of a runaway with Josh Williams having a great score of 65.  Golflink will have to go into overdrive to re-calculate Josh’s new handicap.  The consistent Jack Harlen-Robertson (Lismore) and a new player from Coolangatta-Tweed Heads James Bramall also played to or better than their handicaps.  The Junior Girls event was won again by Maddy Trew (Murwillumbah).  I understand that Maddy gave up the opportunity to play in a significant Junior Girls event in Queensland in order to play in her home event, so well done Maddie.  The Junior Girls nett event was won by Emily Poynton (Iluka) from Ashlee Selwood (Murwillumbah).

The next event in the NRDGA Order of Merit circuit is at Coolangatta-Tweed Heads on Sunday October 19th, we hope to see ya there.  A lot of effort goes into organising these events and our thanks go to the members of Murwillumbah Golf Club for their efforts.
