MAGPIES BELCONNEN GOLF CLUB – 2014 JUNIOR OPEN
Magpies Belconnen Golf Club held a Junior Open event on Sunday 28 September 2014. The event was open to boys and girls under 21 years of age. A stroke event was held for low markers, stableford for higher handicaps and a 9 hole sub-junior event for those yet to gain a handicap.
This was the first time a Junior Open has been held by the club separate from the club’s Men’s Open event. It was a very exciting day for the club and the players added greatly to the excitement.
The winner of the girls’ stroke championship was Madeleine Hunter from Royal Canberra Golf Club. Madeleine set a new women’s course record of 73 (par for the course). Sisters Chloe and Amber Thornton both scored rounds of 79. While Chloe finished second on a countback younger sister Amber had an incredible hole in one at the 147m 5th hole.
The boys’ event was a close affair with Luke Corcoran from Royal Canberra Golf Club and Raja Chahal from Gold Creek Country Club tied with score of 75. Luke was the eventual winner after a sudden death playoff.
The Stableford event for players on handicaps of 12.5+ went to local Junior Brent Oosthuizen with an excellent score of 46 points. Another local Riley Willcox also had a great day with a score of 43 points.
There were eight sub-junior players with the winner being Joel Brown from Moruya Golf Club.
Thanks very much to all players who competed and also to our sponsors, Canberra Indoor Rock Climbing and Office Works who ensured all winners received great prizes. Hopefully we will be running the event at a similar date next year.
