2014 Wagga Wagga Junior Masters

Junior golf is in great hands at Concord Golf Club after two of the clubs rising stars took out the overall championships at the Wagga Wagga Junior Masters this weekend.

Doey Choi continued her stunning form cruising to a 12 shot victory with rounds of 71,73 to finish four under par, 144.  Fellow Concord member Jason Hong took out the Boys Championship in completely different fashion beating Bermagui’s Jackson Hearn on the second sudden death playoff hole.  After two rounds the pair were tied at four over par and headed to a playoff.  With both players vying for their first junior masters title ever they were very nervous but it was Jason that held his nerve that little bit longer to claim the championship with a bogey on the second playoff hole.  Unfortunately for Jackson a few costly mistakes meant the title slipped out of his reach.

Despite the temperatures dropping dramatically today that didn’t stop the juniors from performing.

Wagga Wagga sponsors Pete and Janet Lord as well as Jupiter Motors kindly donated scholarships to six juniors in the event.  The first two $500 scholarships went to the Boys and Girls Overall Champions; Doey Choi and Jason Hong.  Two more $500 scholarships were awarded to the best local scratch and nett players from the event.  These juniors were from the Greater Riverina and South West Slopes regions.  The scratch recipient was Bailey Stewart from Albury and the nett recipient was Jayden Keogh from Henty.  The sponsors also kindly donated two $250 scholarships to be awarded as encouragement awards.  The recipients of these scholarships both have fantastic attitudes towards the game and their playing partners.  They have made big improvements and are a great example for other junior golfers.  This year these scholarships were awarded to Rhys Ballinger (Belmont) and Rachel Fellows (Thurgoona).

JNJG would like to congratulate these recipients and thank our amazing sponsors.  Your generosity is amazing and it is fantastic to see such support for the future of golf.

JNJG would like to extend its thanks to the Wagga Wagga Country Club; its staff, members and volunteers.  You have provided a fantastic course and a great event for our young golfers.  The success of this event is thanks to the hard work from your club.  We really appreciate your support and look forward to returning again next year.

Round 1

NSW Women’s Amateur Champion Doey Choi leads the way after a sizzling round of three under par 71 in the opening round of the 2014 Wagga Wagga Junior Masters.  Her fantastic score included four birdies and an eagle making her not only the leading female competitor but also the overall tournament leader. Yowani Golf Club’s Jakub Gancarz leads the male contingent with a solid round of even par.

A capacity field of 128 keen junior golfers took to the course in the first Junior Masters event of the year.  The two-day event began under overcast skies and humid conditions but as play progressed in came the strong winds and sprinkles of rain.  The course is in fantastic condition with the greens rolling very true and quite fast.

A number of players flourished in the tricky conditions and now sit atop the leader board for either scratch or nett events.
