Fidel Concepcion Captures Individual Title as T-Birds Finish Third

Southern Utah University's Fidel Concepcion captured an individual title as the men's golf team finish third at the Battle in the Tetons on Tuesday. The Thunderbirds shot a 1over (865) across the two-day tournament, finishing third behind Utah State (-7) and Utah Valley (E).

Concepcion, a true freshman, had the low round of the tournament for SUU after shooting a 6-under 66 in the first round, his first of collegiate competition. He finished with a 1-under 71 and even-par 72 to wrap up the competition at 7-under 209.

"This was a great accomplishment for Fidel today," head coach Richard Church said. "We knew coming in that he was a special talent, but to place first in his first collegiate tournament, I couldn't be more pleased."

Sammy Cole and Tim Leonard recorded top 15 finishes for the Thunderbirds, finishing 11th and 13th, respectively after shooting 3-over 219 (74-74-71) and 4-over 220 (70-73-77). Nic Booth and Jameson Keiley rounded out Southern Utah's team score with a 225 (75-69-81) and 226 (74-78-74).

Freshmen Matt Loosle and Tyler Butler, playing as individuals, finished the tournament with a 228 (74-73-81) and 244 (82-81-81) to place 28th and 38th.

Wyoming (+10), host Weber State (+23) and Westminster (+23) rounded out the team finishes in fourth and tied for fifth, respectively.

Southern Utah will return to the links this weekend when the team competes at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational on Saturday and Sunday. The tournament will be hosted by the Air Force Academy and played on the Eisenhower Golf Course in Colorado Springs, Colo.
