2016 Catalina Junior Open

The Catalina Junior Open was played on 7th August at the Catalina Country under near perfect conditions. It was great to see the sun back out to dry up the course that had been hit hard by rain and wind leading up to the event.

The event saw players travel from all over NSW and ACT to compete and to also gain a valuable practice round for the upcoming South Coast Junior Masters that will be contested on 27-28th August.

The 54 participants took to the course full of excitement and nerves. The players were greeted by a friendly face to register, followed by a big bacon and egg roll to help build the energy levels. The players then headed off to commence their warm ups in preparation for their tee off. Players were met on the first tee and had the day’s rules explained to them and offered a free drink by the starter. The freshly fed and watered players then headed out on to the course to do their best.

There were some mixed results on the day with a lot of the juniors finding the course very difficult off the blue markers. There were also some outstanding results on the day. Kelsey Bennett returned the best score with a very solid 73 to win the Girls Division ahead of Chloe Thornton who returned a 77. The winner of the nett for the girls was Isabella Hawes who returned a 74.

In the Boys Division a close contest took place on the course between Brett Levier and Lachlan Chamberlain in the scratch with Brett just getting the upper hand to win with a strong round of 75 while Lachlan had to settle for second with 77.  In the boys nett Jayden Granger was victorious after returning a score of 73 over Blake Halls a further 2 shots back on 75.

There was also a stableford event held on the day. Cody Doyle won this event with a fantastic round of 40 pts. In second place was Leighton Price with a score of 34. Local rising star Emily Dickenson won in the girls division after returning a score of 33pts.
