Redemption for Ellems, Jeff Pulls Through

(3.00pm - Sunday 16th Febraury 2020)

After a heartbreaking 4-putt to lose a playoff for the 2019 Wagga Wagga Junior Masters, Taylah Ellems (The Lakes GC) has bounced back in the best possible way with a resounding 14 shot victory at the 2020 Wagga Wagga Junior Masters.

After starting the final round with a three shot lead, Ellems quickly picked up a birdie on the third, and with that, had already doubled her overnight lead. From there, the margin only grew larger. On a difficult day where par was a good score, Ellems stood tall with a second round even par 73, running away with her first JNJG Junior Masters title. Annika Boyd (Pymble) said farewell to the JNJG scene with a second place finish, sharing that spot with impressive youngster Rachel Lee (North Ryde). For Lee, rounds of 80-77 were good enough to take out the 12 & 13 Years Division, her first ever Age Division Scratch Title.

The Boys Championship was completely different with extra holes needed to separate Jeff Pullen (St Michaels) and Seb Sara (NSW GC) with two more players only a shot further back. In the end, a solid par was enough in the playoff for Pullen to join Ellems as a first time JNJG Masters Champion.

Pullen and Sara finished the tournament at even par, leaving behind them a host of JNJG's top talent. After starting with the lead, Sara was steady throughout the front nine, making regulation pars on the opening six holes to maintain his lead. A bogey-double run on seven and eight opened the door for his rivals, with Pullen taking advantage to join level. They went shot for shot on the back nine, and couldn't be split until overtime was needed.

Whilst Pullen deservedly claimed overall honours, Sara's runner up finish meant he claimed the 14 & 15 Years Division. A shot further back and narrowly missing the playoff was defending champion Josh Robards (Newcastle) and 12 & 13 Years Champion Harry Atkinson (Kurri Kurri), continuing his good recent run of form.

Ellems and Sara Star with Rounds of Three Under Par

(7:00pm - Saturday 15th February 2020)

Taylah Ellems (The Lakes) and Sebastian Sara (NSW GC) will sleep with the overnight lead as they both search for their maiden JNJG Titles after an exciting first day at the Wagga Wagga Junior Masters.

Starting on the 10th, Ellems got off to an incredible start, picking up birdies on the 10th, 11th, 13th and 14th to shoot straight to the top of the leaderboard. Two bogies on the 17th and 18th temporarily slowed the Canberra local down, before three more birdies on the front nine saw her establish a handy 18 hole lead. In the end, that lead was three, with Annika Boyd (Pymble) making six birdies in her second last ever JNJG round to finish at even par. That final round before she turns 18 will be tomorrow, with the JNJG Junior Masters specialist looking for one more late charge to claim another title.

Six shots further back is 14 & 15 Years Leader Annabelle Abrahamsen, who impressed after the long drive from Moree to Wagga Wagga, probably the longest away trip in junior golf!

In the Boys Division, it was youngster Sebastian Sara who impressed on day one, taking the lead with a three under par 69. Sara remained calm, bouncing back from bogies on the first and fifth hole with fives birdies in a 10 hole stretch to storm to the lead. Fellow youngster Harry Atkinson (Kurri Kurri) also impressed, making five birdies of his own to finish at one under par.

2020 Wagga Wagga Junior Masters

(10:00am – Wednesday 12th February 2020)

The 2020 Junior Masters series will be off to fast start this weekend, with a near capacity field taking part in the 10th staging of the Wagga Wagga Junior Masters.

Long-time sponsor of all things golf at Wagga Wagga Country Club, Kilbrogan Trading, will be joined by a brand new sponsor getting involved in Junior Golf in NSW for the first time, with JNJG delighted to announce that Bridgestone Golf have come on board to support the Junior Masters Event. In total, Kilbrogan Trading and Bridgestone Golf will be donating almost $10,000 worth of prizes to players across all age divisions.

In the Boys Division, defending champion Joshuaa Robards (Newcastle) will be looking to become the first back-to-back winner in the 10 year history of the event, however he will face stiff competition from 2018 Champion and home-town hero Bart Carroll. If either Robards or Carroll was able to claim the victory, they would become the first two time winner of the event. Blake Phillips (Concord) and Ethan Harvey (The Lakes) will also fancy their chances of claiming the first JNJG Junior Masters Title of 2020.

Defending Girls Champion Yerin Kim will be on hand once again this year, however since turning 18, she’ll purely be a spectator cheering on her younger brother who is taking part in the event! It remains an extremely strong Girls Division, with 2019 Runner Up Taylah Ellems (The Lakes) battling against Annika Boyd (Pymble) in her final JNJG Event before turning 18, with Angelina Gong (Concord), Ella Murray (Dubbo) and Ann Jang (Toukley) also right in the mix.

Wagga Wagga Country Club will be hosting an event in the lead up to the weekend, including a 9 hole “Warm Up” on Friday afternoon which includes a welcome BBQ and 9 Hole Competition with great prizes!! For bookings into the Warm Up, please contact the proshop on 6922 6444.

The first round will begin on Saturday morning at 11:25am, followed by a shotgun start on Sunday at 7:30am.
