NSW Junior Reduced to 54 Holes as Storm Halts Play

(5:15pm - Wednesday 16th December 2020)

The NSW Junior was reduced to 54 Holes after play was suspended (at 4:19pm) and then officially cancelled (at 5:07pm) as storms rolled through the Southern Highlands and hit Mt Broughton on Wednesday afternoon.

As a result, Jeffrey Guan (The Australian) and Josh Robards (Newcastle) were declared joint winners of the NSW Boys Championship and Sophie Yip (Concord) recorded a five stroke victory in the NSW Girls Championship.

If we're being honest, the premature end to the final event of the year sums up what 2020 has been like.

Rain threatened all week and a shortened tournament was always on the cards, however when the Tuesday night storm passed through in the early hours of the morning and cleared before play was due to start Wednesday, the chance to play 72 Holes was still alive. Play begun early at 6:30am on Wednesday morning with all players informed that 72 Holes was the goal, however if the predicted storms did hit and play abandoned, the result at 54 Holes would stand.

And at 4:19pm, it looked like that was exactly what was about to happen.

The storms rolled down through the Blue Mountains from the North and as play continued and the leaders made the turn, all eyes turned to the weather radar as the storm got closer. With the skies getting darker and before the rain hit, play was suspended and all players brought from the course to the safety of the clubhouse. Less than an hour later, as the storm began to really close in, play was abandoned.

Guan and Robards shared the 54 Hole lead at nine under par and as a result were declared joint winners, a fitting result after three fantastic rounds. Both players picked up their first JNJG Major Title, Robards in his final Junior Event before heading off to US College in 2021 and Guan after a number of impressive performances in the previous years depsite giving away age and size to his rivals.

The NSW Girls was more clear cut, with Yip breaking away from the chasing pack late in round three with birdies on three of her final four holes.

Almost half of the 62 players who made the cut had finished their final rounds, with the leading Boys and Girls completing 12 Holes before play was abandoned.

Yip and Scaysbrook Lead, Guan Takes Control of the Boys

(7:00pm - Tuesday 15th December 2020)

Sophie Yip (Concord) and Ella Scaysbrook (Newcastle) will head into the final round of the NSW Girls Championship with a share of the lead after playing superb rounds on Tuesday afternoon.

Overnight leader Yip fired a two under par 70 and looked to have opened up a nice lead on the chasing pack until the young gun from the North Coast made her move. Scaysbrook made the turn at even par before picking up three birdies on the back nine as the weather turned to sign for a 69 to join Yip at one under par.

Brielle Mapanao (The Australian), Michelle Moon (NSW) and Ann Jang (Toukley) share third place at three over par, four shots off the lead.

Jeffrey Guan (The Australian) has taken control at the NSW Boys Championships with a second consecutive 68 at Mt Broughton Golf and Country Club. On another strange Summer day, Guan reeled off seven birdies for the second straight day and takes a two shot lead into the final day of play.

Guan leads playing partner Jye Halls (NSW), who backed up his opening 68 with a 70 on Tuesday morning. Josh Robards (Newcastle), who shared the overnight lead with Guan and Halls, sits one shot further back in third place after fighting back with four birdies in the final six holes to sign for a 71.

Round 3 will begin tomorrow at 6:30am as planned, however a decision will be made at 6:00am as to whether or not we will be playing 36 Holes. The other option (if the weather does look like it's going to be horrible) is to reduce tomorrow to only 18 Holes and reduce the Tournament to 54 Holes.

The Boys Cut fell at +10, with 42 players at that score or better.

The Girls Cut fell at +15, with 20 players at that score or better.
