School Sport ACT Golf Champions 2018

On Monday 14 May 2018, School Sport ACT held its annual Golf Championships at Capital Golf Club and Canberra International Pitch n Putt.

Chris Jones, ACT Schools Golf Coordinator organised the event and was supported on the day by Sarah Robertson & David McGibbon, from ACT Schools, Sue Harrison, JNJG, Joanne Mills, PGA Professional Capital Golf Club, Volunteers – Warren Gray and several Pitch n Putt members, Barbara Wallace CSGA, Pauline Jeffery and parents.

There were 38 schools represented:

Burgmann Canberra HS Caroline Chisholm CGGS CGS Chapman PS

Daramalan Erindale Fraser PS Gold Creek (Primary & Senior) Hawker PS Holy Family Gowrie Holy Spirit PS John Paul II Kingsford Smith Lake Ginninderra Lyneham HS Maryibyrnong PS Marist St Mary Mackillop

Merici Miles Franklin PS Mt Stromlo HS Narrabundah Radford (Junior & Senior) Red Hill PS Richardson PS SFXC Southern Cross St Clare of Assisi St Michaels St Peter & Paul St Thomas Aquinas St Thomas the Apostle Trinity Turner PS Weetangera PS

Seventy students competed in the event spanning across Sub-Junior, U12, U15 and U19 divisions. Those players holding GA handicaps played 18 holes of stroke, while the sub-juniors played chipping and putting games before transferring to the Pitch n Putt course to play 18 holes.

2018 is the first time SSACT has utilised the Pitch n Putt facility at the Canberra International Golf Centre and, as it turned out it was a great success.

Situated just across the road from Capital Golf Club, the shorter holes at Pitch n Putt provided the perfect design for 13 sub-juniors to test their skills. With several local Pitch n Putt members to guide the younger students around the course, some excellent scores were recorded. “It’s like a mini golf course with real tees, greens and bunkers”, “Can I hit it into the bunker and have some fun?” These were just some of the excited comments from the budding young golfers when getting ready to play. We managed to play 18 holes of Pitch n Putt in two hours and returned to Capital Golf Club for presentations.

The girls U19 division was a closely fought title with Isabelle Hawes, Royal Canberra defeating Taylah Ellems, Yowani Country Club in a play-off to take the trophy. Riley Willcox showed some exceptional talent finishing with a par round of 69 to take the boys title.

Congratulations to all competitors.  Good luck to those who have nominated for selection in representative teams.
