2018 NSW Junior Championships and JNJG 12 Years & Under State Age Championships

(Wednesday 28th March, 2018)

Jack Newton Junior Golf is pleased to announce that a new event will be launched in July, with the JNJG 12 Years and Under State Age Championships to be held at Penrith GC and Dunheved GC in Western Sydney.

Following on from the success of the 2018 Harvey Norman Week of Golf, Wagga Wagga Junior Masters, and the recent Peter O’Malley Junior Masters at the Bathurst GC, where for the very first time 10 and 11 Year Old Age Group Divisions were introduced into the tournament, Jack Newton Junior Golf has decided to expand the State Age Championship component of the NSW Junior Championships.

This change will accommodate the huge number of young juniors taking the step up into tournament golf without impacting the quality of the NSW Junior Championship, with tournament numbers across both the NSW Junior Championship and JNJG 12 Years and Under State Age Championships expected to climb well over the 300 player mark.

“At the recent Peter O’Malley Junior Masters in Bathurst, a record field of more than 200 players took part, up from only 160 players in previous years”, said JNJG Tournament and Event Manager Dale Hughes. “When we looked at the breakdown of players and what age groups they were competing in at that event, we noticed that more than 50% of the field were competing as 10, 11, 12 or 13 Year Olds. This is a massive change from years gone by when the 15, 16, and 17 Year Old Age Groups dominated the numbers at JNJG events.”

Previously, the NSW Junior Championships and JNJG State Age Championships were played in conjunction with each other and a capacity field of approximately 250 players from around the country came to compete in the event. “We quickly worked out that with the success of these younger divisions at the first few events in 2018, when you tried to add another 60 or 70 youngsters under the age of 12 into the NSW Junior and JNJG State Age Championships in July, there just wasn’t enough daylight to fit everybody in”, said Hughes.

So rather than try and squeeze extra players from those younger age divisions into an already full event, or worse have these younger players who were wanting to compete in the Championships be balloted out, the JNJG 12 Years and Under State Age Championships will not only cater for these new players, but also provide a stronger NSW Junior Championships in the Newcastle district.
