State Age Champions Decided at Under 12s

(3:00pm - Friday 20th July, 2018)

After a long week of golf, the first ever JNJG 12 Years and Under State Age Champions have been decided at the Penrith Golf Club.

Congratulations to Boys State Age Champions Kai Komulainen (12 Years), Max Fischer (11 Years) and Enzo Moon (10 Years). And Congratulations to Girls State Age Champions Ella Scaysbrook (12 Years), JuEun Jang (11 Years) and Nara Shin (10 Years).

12 Years

Kai Komulainen (Long Reef) has hung on to defeat Harry Atkinson (Kurri Kurri) in a division that literally came down to millimetres!! Starting the day with a four shot lead, Komulainen was in control until a triple bogey six on the short 11th. That saw Atkinson draw level, and the boys went shot for shot throughout the back nine. The Long Reef junior made birdie on the 17th to seemingly wrap up the title, but a bogey on the last gave Atkinson a chance. Harry had a long range birdie attempt of his own on the 72nd hole to force a playoff, but the ball agonisingly sat on the lip and wouldn't fall. Ray Zhang (Oatlands) and Adam Derbas (Bankstown) cleared out in the Nett Division, with Zhang winning on a countback.

Ella Scaysbrook (Port Macquarie) won her first JNJG Title with victory in the Girls 12 Years Division, but Sophia Perkins (Cronulla) made her really work for it. Scaysbrook finished with a five shot victory, her opening two rounds paving the way to the trophy. Robyn Keen (Avondale) starred in the Nett Division giving none of her rivals a chance. Keen finished at 11 under par, one shot clear of Perkins who finished runner up in both the Scratch and Nett division.

11 Years

After dominating the 11 Years and Under Division throughout the JNJG Junior Masters season, Max Fischer added the 11 Years State Age Championship to his impressive resume on Friday. Fischer finally shook off Jamie Smith (Manly) and Matt Fullerton (Lynwood) to win by seven strokes, with the two youngsters sharing second. Fullerton finished an incredible 32 under his handicap for the week, winning by 13 shots from Zak Marsh (Cabramatta).

JuEun Jang (Ryde Parramatta) came from seven shots behind to defeat Sahara Hillman Varma (Concord) in the Girls 11 Years Division. Jang fired the round of the week in the Girls Division, an incredible three over par 78 in the windy conditions, to take out the trophy in impressive style. Hillman Varma still impressed to finish in second, her score also good enough to be on top of the Nett Division. Hayoung Lee (Avondale) also impressed throughout the week, finishing 13 under her handicap to also claim a Nett prize.

10 Years and Under

The Boys 10 Years and Under Division went down to the wire, with Enzo Moon (Strathfield) hanging on to win his first JNJG State Age Title. After fighting off the challengers in the final group, he had to fight off one last challenge with Adam Ding (Bexley) flying home. Moon did just enough, defeating the fast finishing Ding by two stokes. Ti Fox (Lynwood) continued his impressive debut JNJG season with a four shot victory in the Nett Division. Fox fired his third Nett 68 for the week, defeating Arnav Singh (The Coast) who also impressed in the Nett Division finishing at minus seven.

10 Year Old superstar Nara Shin (Ryde Parramatta) gave her rivals no chance in the 10 Years and Under Division, cruising to a 30 shot victory. 10 year old Shin was so impressive her score would have been good enough to finish 3rd overall! Allana Assabgy (Stonecutters Ridge) finished in second position, with Ballina's Frankie Payne flying home with a Nett 67 to win the Girls Nett Division on a countback from Ebony Park (Carnarvon).

JNJG would like to send a big thank you to both Penrith GC and Dunheved GC for hosting the event, and congratulations to all 94 players for competing with smiles all week.

2018 JNJG 12 Years & Under State Age Championships

(9:00am - Wednesday 28th March, 2018)

Jack Newton Junior Golf is pleased to announce that a new event will be launched in July, with the JNJG 12 Years and Under State Age Championships to be held at Penrith GC and Dunheved GC in Western Sydney.

Following on from the success of the 2018 Harvey Norman Week of Golf, Wagga Wagga Junior Masters, and the recent Peter O’Malley Junior Masters at the Bathurst GC, where for the very first time 10 and 11 Year Old Age Group Divisions were introduced into the tournament, Jack Newton Junior Golf has decided to expand the State Age Championship component of the NSW Junior Championships.

This change will accommodate the huge number of young juniors taking the step up into tournament golf without impacting the quality of the NSW Junior Championship, with tournament numbers across both the NSW Junior Championship and JNJG 12 Years and Under State Age Championships expected to climb well over the 300 player mark.

“At the recent Peter O’Malley Junior Masters in Bathurst, a record field of more than 200 players took part, up from only 160 players in previous years”, said JNJG Tournament and Event Manager Dale Hughes. “When we looked at the breakdown of players and what age groups they were competing in at that event, we noticed that more than 50% of the field were competing as 10, 11, 12 or 13 Year Olds. This is a massive change from years gone by when the 15, 16, and 17 Year Old Age Groups dominated the numbers at JNJG events.”

Previously, the NSW Junior Championships and JNJG State Age Championships were played in conjunction with each other and a capacity field of approximately 250 players from around the country came to compete in the event. “We quickly worked out that with the success of these younger divisions at the first few events in 2018, when you tried to add another 60 or 70 youngsters under the age of 12 into the NSW Junior and JNJG State Age Championships in July, there just wasn’t enough daylight to fit everybody in”, said Hughes.

So rather than try and squeeze extra players from those younger age divisions into an already full event, or worse have these younger players who were wanting to compete in the Championships be balloted out, the JNJG 12 Years and Under State Age Championships will not only cater for these new players, but also provide a stronger NSW Junior Championships in the Newcastle district.
