2018 Sydney Harvey Norman Week of Golf

Brielle Mapanao and Luke Ferrier win in Sydney

(Friday 5th January, 2018)

Brielle Mapanao (Stonecutters Ridge) and Luke Ferrier (Merewether) have won the 2018 Harvey Norman Sydney Week of Golf on an exciting final day at Muirfield GC. The win made all the more remarkable by the fact Mapanao and Ferrier are both at opposite ends of their JNJG careers.

13 Year Old Mapanao has had a breakout 12 months, narrowly missing out on the 2017 JNJG Most Improved Junior Girl to runner up Charlotte Perkins (Cronulla), whilst 18 Year Old Ferrier managed to claim his maiden JNJG Major title in his final ever JNJG Event.

From very early in the week, the Girls Division looked set to be a showdown between the two 13 year old's, with Mapanao and Perkins breaking away from the rest of the field on day two and sharing the lead after 36 holes. Mapanao edged her way to the front on Thursday and took a one-shot lead into the final round before running away with the tournament on Friday thanks to the low round of the tournament, a 76 at Muirfield GC.

Mapanao played so solid on Friday, making only five bogies in the entire round before the tournament was sealed with a birdie on the 16th. Perkins finished runner up, a staggering 19 shots clear of Girls 15 and Over Champion, Brianna Robards (Newcastle). There was also a standout in the Girls 11 Years and Under, with 10 Year Old Nara Shin finishing fourth overall, and winning the Girls 11 and Under Division by 27 shots.

Whilst Mapanao was edging clear in the Girls Division, the Boys tournament was coming down to the wire with as many as four players still in contention as they made the turn and headed to the back nine. Overnight leader Brandon Shong (Castle Hill) started slowly, opening the door for his playing partners and it quickly became clear that the winner would be coming from that final pairing. Josh Bell (Bonnie Doon) had his chances before a double bogey on the eighth and three bogies in a row from the 10th ended his run, finishing in outright fourth, one shot behind Shong who fell away with a 76 on Friday.

That left Ferrier and fellow 18 Year Old Beau Willett as the final two contenders, and the pair put on a show over the closing holes. Ferrier holed out for an eagle on the 13th to give him breathing space but a double bogey on the 15th brought him straight back to the pack. Both boys managed to birdie the difficult 16th hole and when Ferrier dropped another shot at 17, the lead was only one. And despite Willett making a clutch birdie on the 18th, Ferrier answered with his own, a beautiful 60m pitch across the corner of the bunker to the front left pin saw the Newcastle boy go on to make the 6 foot birdie putt for the win.

It was a good day for the Hunter, with Caleb Bromley (Waratah) and Harry Atkinson (Kurri Kurri) picking up the 14-15 Years and 12 Years Divisions respectively. Sandwiched in between them was Boys 13 Years Winner Jye Halls, defeating twin brother Blake in what was the first ever 1-2 by twins at a major JNJG event. The younger age groups also proved to be a big hit, with Max Fischer (Moore Park) taking out the Boys 11 Years Division whilst Toby Farrar (Lynwood) took out the Boys 10 Years and Under.

Moore Park proved far too good in the Teams Event, running away with the title to claim the $1000 prize donated by JNJG to the club's junior program.

JNJG would like to thank the board and greenkeepers of all four clubs, Lynwood, Stonecutters Ridge, North Ryde and Muirfield, for presenting the courses in simply fantastic condition throughout the week.

Shong Extends Lead as the Youngsters SHINE

(Wednesday 3rd January, 2018)

Brandon Shong (Castle Hill) continues to lead the 2018 Harvey Norman Sydney Week of Golf after the second round at Stonecutters Ridge GC. The 18 year old backed up a 68 at Lynwood on Day 1 with a 74 on Day two, extending his lead to four shots over Josh Bell (Bonnie Doon). Charlotte Perkins (Cronulla) and Brielle Mapanao (Stonecutters Ridge) have opened up a huge lead in the Girls Division, sharing the lead after round two.

But the highlight of the Sydney Week of Golf is without doubt some of the youngest players in the event, after some fantastic scores over the opening two days in the Age Division Events.

Caleb Bromley (Waratah) leads West Australian visitor Gareth Steyn in the 14&15 Years Boys Division at +5 after consistent rounds of 74-75. Another WA visitor is on fire in the 14 & 15 Years Nett Division, with Fred Walker currently 16 under par after the opening two rounds!

In the Boys 13 Years, Jye Halls (Mollymook) had the best round of his life at Stonecutters Ridge on Wednesday, making four birdies in his three under par 69. Isaac Fan (Cronulla) and Josh Todd (Randwick) are in hot pursuit, whilst Eric Zhou (Roseville) leads the Nett event at -11.

Harry Atkinson (Kurri Kurri) leads by an incredible 11 shots in the Boys 12 Years, breaking 80 for the second straight time. There's a host of players on fire in the Nett Division, with Nihal Gaundar (Bankstown) leading after a 65 in the second round.

Adam Derbas (Bankstown) is looking to become the first winner of the new 11 Years Division, leading Max Fischer (Moore Park) by four shots after the second round. JNJG regular Oliver Huynh (Moore Park) is enjoying the slightly shorter course the 11 Year Old's are playing, sitting at -9 through 36 holes.

There's also plenty of good scores in the youngest age group, with Toby Farrar (Lynwood) leading after rounds of 86 and 82. Jarrod Fletcher (Castle Hill) is also on fire, backing up a 68 Nett in Round 1 with a 61 Nett in Round 2.

The Girls are finishing their second rounds now ahead of an early tee time on Wednesday, with youngsters Charlotte Perkins (Cronulla) and Brielle Mapanao (Stonecutters Ridge) leading the way, tied on top of the leaderboard at 10 over par. Just like the boys, there's also been some standout performances in the Age Divisional Contests....

Nara Shin leads the way in the 11 Years and Under by a whopping 13 shots after impressing with rounds of 88 and 85. Ha Young Lee (Chatswood) is the standout in the Nett Division, 13 Under Par through the opening two rounds.

Perkins and Mapanao have run away with the 12-14 Years Event, with Eileen Pang (Liverpool) the standout in the Nett and leads by five shots at -12.

Playing in her final JNJG event, Brianna Robards (Belmont) leads the 15 Years and Over Division, deep into the back nine in her second round. Christine Shin (Castle Hill), also playing in her final JNJG event, is a comfortable leader in the Nett Division.

Team Event

JNJG will also be running a Teams Event for golf clubs right across the country in conjunction with the Sydney Week of Golf. A minimum of four players from one club is needed to be eligible for the teams event, whilst there is no maximum number of players.

To put it simply, the more players from one club that play in the tournament, the more chance your club has of winning!

- The Team Event will be run over all four days.
- Each day, the best four nett scores will be added together to get a team total.
- If there are 4 players from one club playing in the event, all 4 scores will count.
- If there are 15 players in the event, we'll take the best 4 scores out of those 15 players.
- At the end of the week, the scores from all four days will be added together to form the final team total.

All players from the winning team will be given a prize at presentation on Friday, whilst the winning club will receive a $500 donation from JNJG to go towards the club's junior program. If the winning club was also involved in either the Encourage Shield or Junior Pennant competition around the state, the club will receive an additional $500, making it $1000 in total.
