NSW Wins 8th Straight State of Origin Title

(Tuesday 19th January - 6:00pm)

NSW has held on to defeat a fast finishing Queensland by 17.5 matches to 12.5 matches at Palmer Colonial on the Gold Coast. Having won the first three sessions to open up a six point lead, NSW were on the ropes when Queensland claimed 5 of the first 6 matches in the afternoon Singles, but the team steadied and retained the trophy when team captain Corey Jones picked up the Blues 16th point of the contest.

Girls 12 Years - It was important for both teams to get off to a good start, and Sophie Yip (NSW) was able to do that in the opening match, defeating Lion Higo (QLD) by the narrowest of margins. 4 birdies but the NSW young gun got a very important point for the Blues. NSW won 1up.

Boys 12 Years - Queensland hit back straight away with Blaike Perkins (QLD) recording a last hole victory over Jeffrey Guan (NSW). The match was played in great spirit, with Guan conceding more than 50m on every hole off the tee, but making up for it with a deadly short game. QLD won 2up.

Girls 13 Years - Queensland looked in control of the early matches in the afternoon singles with Eloise Taylor (QLD) running away with her match against June Song (NSW), recording an impressive victory. QLD won 4&3.

Boys 13 Years - Another point for the Queenslanders, with Elvis Smylie hanging on to defeat a gallant Harvey Remfrey (NSW). Smylie jumped out to a 3up lead and was never headed, closing the match out with four straight pars. QLD won 2&1.

Girls 14 Years - JNJG Srixon International Sub Junior Champion Joy Manix (QLD) continued her impressive week, with a controlled performance against Amber Thornton (NSW). Mannix took the lead with back to back birdies on 6 and 7, closing out the match with some super putting. QLD won 2&1.

Boys 14 Years - The most dominant performance of the Singles, with Louis Dobbelaar (QLD) making light work of Aidan Powter (NSW). Dobbelaar was impressive throughout, making five birdies throughout the round to close it out in style. QLD won 6&5.

Girls 15 Years - With Queensland getting off to a such a hot start, NSW needed a point to steady the ship and Hannah Park delivered, coming from behind to defeat Eloise Taylor (QLD). Park found herself two down early on the back nine, but played the final 7 holes in two under par to record the win. NSW won 2&1.

Boys 15 Years - This game took a complete twist on the back nine. Chris Fan (NSW) jumped out the blocks and was 5up through 9 before Sam Blackshaw (QLD) rallied, with the comeback complete on the 18th when the Queenslander made a good par putt to win the hole and halve the match. Match Halved.

Girls 16 Years - Stef Hall (NSW) provided the biggest win for her side in singles, with a 6&4 victory over Lisa Edgar (QLD). Three front nine birdies saw the NSW girl open up a 4up lead and was never in danger on the back nine. NSW won 6&4.

Boys 16 Years - Jed Morgan (QLD) defeated Josh Armstrong (NSW) in a scrappy match that went all the way to the 18th. Morgan was brilliant early in building a 3up lead before a back nine which saw both players repreatedly open the door for the other. QLD won 2up

Girls 17 Years - 2015 Australian Junior Champion and 2016 Australian Amateur Semi-Finalist Celina Yuan (NSW) was given a huge scare by the gutsy Aneka Park (QLD). The match was All Square through 10 holes, but Yuan did enough to get the win on the back nine. NSW won 3&2.

Boys 17 Years - The two team captains battled it out in the final match, with NSW Captain Corey Jones getting a victory over Lucas Higgins (QLD). The match ended on the 15th with one of the few birdies made in a game where the putts just wouldn't drop for either player. NSW won 4&3.

A big thank you to all the Golf Queensland staff for hosting us this week, in particular Rae Clarke and Charlie Earp. See you in 2017 where NSW will try to make it 9 in a row!!

NSW Close in on Victory at State of Origin

(Tuesday 19th January - 12:00pm)

In one of the closest round of matches in State of Origin History, the NSW team has extended it's overall lead in the 2016 State of Origin ahead of the final round singles at Palmer Colonial Golf Course.

Girls 12/13 Years - The NSW team of Sophie Yip and June Song fought back from 2 down through 10 holes to win the match 1up against Lion Higo and Eloise Taylor (QLD). A 5 hole stretch on the back nine proved the difference, with the NSW pair winning 4 of those holes!

Boys 12/13 Years - Another tremendous fightback by the NSW team, with Jeffrey Guan and Harvey Remfrey earning a half point against Blaike Perkins and Elvis Smylie (QLD). The NSW team came from 3 down with only 6 holes to play, a clutch par on the final hole winning the hole and seeing the match halved.

Girls 14/15 Years - Both teams come off the final green thinking it was a missed opportunity, and in a match where neither team was ever more than 1up, it fittingly finished all square. It came down to the final putt, with Joy Mannix (QLD) making a 20 foot putt for par before Hannah Park was unable to capitalise on a brilliant approach by NSW team mate Amber Thornton, missing the birdie and the match finished all square.

Boys 14/15 Years - A fourth straight match headed down the 18th hole, and this time the sun was shining on the Queensland team who stole a point from NSW with a brilliant finish to the best match of the week. Louis Dobbelaar and Sam Blackshaw (QLD) birdied 4 of the final 6 holes to fight back from 3 down and claim a 1up victory over Chris Fan and Aidan Powter (NSW). The match only decided on the final green when Dobbelaar nearly holed his 115m approach shot for a tap in birdie.

Girls 16/17 Years - Celina Yuan and Stefanie Hall (NSW) continued their impressive week with a 2&1 victory over Lisa Edgar and Aneka Park (QLD). It was another tight match, with the NSW team slightly more solid over the final few holes to win the match on the 17th green with a par.

Boys 16/17 Years - NSW took control of the event closing out the final match in brilliant fashion. With the match locked at All Square, Josh Armstrong and Captain Corey Jones (NSW) lifted when needed and birdies on the 16th and 17th closed out the match against Jed Morgan and Lucas Higgins (QLD) 2&1.

Heading into the afternoon singles, NSW leads Queensland by 12 matches to 6 matches, requiring another 3.5 points to retain the State of Origin Trophy.

Girls 12/13 Years - Queensland hit back early in the afternoon matches, with Lion Higo and Eloise Taylor winning the opening match 2&1 against Sophie Yip and June Song (NSW). The match was in the balance until 12 year old Higo managed a birdie on the Par 5 17th to close it out.

Boys 12/13 Years - The youngest boys division was even closer, with Jeffrey Guan and Harvey Remfrey (NSW) winning 1up on the final green. They defeated Blaike Perkins and Elvis Smylie (QLD) 1up when Smylie's putt for a half on the final green caught the lip and stayed out.

NSW Shooting for Eight Straight

Tournament Preview - Friday 15th January

The Jack Newton Junior Golf team representing NSW will head to the Gold Coast on Sunday for the Annual State of Origin showdown against it's Queensland counterparts, searching for a record 8th straight title. Having been unbeatable in recent years at Newcastle Golf Club, the switch to the Sunshine State and the testing Palmer Colonial layout will give the Golf Queensland Team the home course advantage and be sure to make the 2016 contest a memorable one.

The two teams will once again battle it out in the Ryder Cup style event, with the 6 boys and 6 girls from each state selected combining to play Mixed Foursomes, Fourball, Foursomes and Singles over two action packed days of competition.

The players selected, the best performed boy and girl in each Age Division from 12 through to 17, combine in all four rounds searching for the 15.5 points required to claim the Charlie Earp Bowl out of the 30 points that are up for grabs over the two days.

Round One on Monday morning sees the players of the same age pairing up to play Mixed Foursomes whilst players of the same sex pair up on Monday afternoon for Round Two and the Fourball event which always sees plenty of good scores posted.
