14 Year Old Ji Wins Nail-Biting NSW Junior Girls

(4:30pm - Friday 8th July, 2016)

Belinda Ji (Concord) has upstaged some of her older rivals to win the most exciting NSW Junior Girls Championship in recent years.

The shortened 54 hole event created plenty of excitement, with as many as 10 players within three shots of the lead on a tense and tight back nine. 14 Year Old Ji showed maturity beyond her years, storming into the lead as many faltered around her with birdies on the 10th, 12th and 15th holes. A blemish on the difficult 16th hole brought her back to the field, but a comfortable par-par finish on the final two holes were enough to see the Concord Junior lift her first Major Trophy.

Overnight leaders Steph Kyriacou (St Michaels) and Linley Ooi (Victoria) dropped shots consistently on another difficult day for scoring, finishing in a share of second two shots behind Ji. A stunning FIVE players were only a shot further back in a tie for 4th, including Sheradyn Johnson (Victoria) who closed with the best round of the tournament, a three under par 72 which included four birdies and an eagle on a cold and wet day.

Joy for Jed at NSW Junior Boys

(4:30pm - Friday 8th July, 2016)

Queenslander Jed Morgan has survived a late scare on the 17th hole to claim the 2016 NSW Junior Boys Championship at Shelly Beach Golf Club.

After weather delay's on Thursday reduced the tournament to 54 holes, a fast start on Friday morning was critical and the 16 year old got just that. After finishing five holes late on Thursday before the weather delay ended play, Morgan resumed play on the 6th and started with a birdie. Little did he know it was soon to get better. A superb approach shot on the difficult 7th hole found it's way into the hole for an eagle two and all of a sudden there was a new name on top the leaderboard. After some steady play throughout the back nine, it looked certain that the NSW Junior Boys Title was headed to Queensland, but the tournament was nearly turned upside down when the youngster's second shot into the 17th hole went over the green and Out Of Bounds. Morgan remained calm, scrambling for a double bogey to retain the lead before a par on the last was enough to close out the win.

There were plenty of players in contention throughout the final round, with Kiwi Shaun Campbell finishing in solo second, one shot behind Morgan. Campbell, following in the footsteps of fellow countryman and 2016 Champion Henry Spring had a golden chance to take a share of the lead on the 17th, only for his short birdie putt to slide by the hole. He also could only manage a par on the 18th hole to finish one shot clear of Andre Lautee (Victoria). The 36 hole leader closed with a two over par 73 to finish by himself in third. NSW trio Corey Jones (Pymble), Jordan Garner (Pennant Hills) and Jason Hong (Concord) finished in a tie for 4th, a further three shots back.

JNJG State Age Champions Decided

(3:30pm - Friday 8th July, 2016)

After a cold, wet, and windy week at Shelly Beach and Toukley, the JNJG State Age Championship Titles were decided on Friday on the NSW Central Coast.

A playoff was needed to determine the winner of the Boys 17 Years division, after Jason Hong (Concord), Corey Jones (Pymble) and Jordan Garner (Pennant Hills) finished locked together after 54 holes. A par on the second playoff hole was enough for Hong to edge out the two central coast locals in front of a packed clubhouse and 18th green at Shelly Beach. Brad Doherty (Oatlands) defeated Reid Brown (Pymble) and Chris Fan (Avondale) by the narrowest of margins to win the Boys 16 Years Division, with a birdie on the 17th hole proving the difference.

Jye Pickin (Avondale) showed why he is in the sights of Golf Australia, finishing with a flourish to win the Boys 15 Years Division. After starting on the 10th, Pickin was given a real scare by Aidan Powter (St Michaels), before rallying with birdies on the 8th and 9th, his final two holes, to win by two strokes. Corey Lamb (Branxton) did it the other way in the Boys 14 Years, winning by two strokes depsite a double bogey and a triple bogey in his closing four holes.

Lachlan Chamberlain (Federal) set up his win after a magnificent round on Wednesday in cyclonic winds, cruising to a five shot victory in the Boys 13 Years and Under Division. Josh Robards (Belmont) had his best JNJG finishing in outright second. One of the closest age divisions all week was the Boys 12 Years and Under, with Jacob Dundas (Toronto) coming from behind with the best final round to win by four shots from Jeffrey Guan (Bexley) and Sebastian Sara (Bankstown).

The Girls JNJG State Age Championships was also closely fought, with Celina Yuan (The Australian) once again proving to strong in her age group, winning the 17 Years Division by a whopping nine shots. It wasn't as easy for Doey Choi (Concord), coming from behind to defeat Chloe Thornton (NSW GC) in the Girls 16 Years Division. Choi finished four shots clear of Thornton, with Amy Chu (The Australian) and Bella Kil (Avondale) a further two shots back in a tie for third.

Steph Kyriacou (St Michaels) nearly won the NSW Junior Girls Title finishing second, but still took home the Girls 15 Years Division, making a birdie on the final hole to defeat Hannah Park (NSW GC) by two strokes. Belinda Ji (Concord) added the Girls 14 Years State Age Trophy to go alongside her NSW Junior Girls Championship title, whilst June Song (Avondale), Kara Williams (Avondale) and Monica Johnson (Moore Park) all impressed throughout the week in a strong age group.

Taylah Ellems (Fairbairn) recorded her first JNJG scratch victory in the Girls 13 Years Division, winning by five shots from Maddy Laws Farrell. Laws Farell, from Port Macquarie, was the only player in the entire field (both boy and girl) to finish the week under par, claiming the Girls Junior Salver for her impressive -15 score. Jasmine Driscoll (NSW GC) edged out Claire Shin (Bankstown) by one stroke to win the Girls 12 Years and Under Division.

Corey Claims Country Champs in Dramatic Playoff

(3:00pm - Friday 8th July, 2016)

Shelly Beach local Corey Jones defeated fellow Shelly Beach member Jordie Garner in a dramtic 23 hole playoff to win the 2016 NSW Country Junior Championships on his home course. After the pair finished locked together at +5 at the completion of 36 holes, Thursday's third round of the NSW Junior Championships was also to be an 18 hole playoff between the two local 17 year olds for the Country Junior Championships title. Two seperate weather delay's on Thursday meant the leading groups could only manage to complete 6 holes, and when they came back and resumed play on Friday morning, Jones had seized control. Leading by as many as three shots late on the front nine, and still leading by two shots with only four holes to go, it appeared certain that Jones would win the longest playoff in NSW Junior Championships history. Garner rallied however, making an eagle on the par five 15th, and when Jones made a bogey on the following hole, they were locked together once more. A further sudden death playoff was required, and on the 5th extra hole, and the 23rd extra hole in total, Garner faltered, leaving Jones as the champion.

The Girls Event was more straight forward, with Queanbeyan's Chloe Thornton winning the girls division by three strokes. Set up by a brilliant opening round of one under par 74 at Shelly Beach, Thornton had opened up a five shot lead over her closest rival, Murwillumbah's Maddie Trew. That proved the difference, depsite Trew closing the gap in the difficult windy conditions throughout the second round. Casey Cook (Tura Beach) was a further six shots back in third place.

On the back of Garner and Jones, the Central Coast DGA also took honours in the NSW Inter-District Teams Championship. Garner and Jones were joined in the Central Coast District team by Toukley pair Beau Willet and Annika Boyd, finishing the teams event on a combined score of 461, four shots clear of the Lower North Coast, with the Northern Rivers seven shots further back in third place.

Rae and Song are Champion of Champions

(2:30pm - Friday 8th July, 2016)

Corey Rae (Cromer) and June Song (Avondale / North Ryde) have won the 2016 NSW Junior Champion of Champions in horrendous conditions on the NSW Central Coast.

Playing at Shelly Beach on Wednesday in the second round, Rae, the junior champion at Cromer, fired a six over par 77 to finish the 36 hole event at +5. That was enough for a one shot victory, with Brad Doherty (Oatlands) and Reid Brown (Pymble / Wingham) only one shot further back after finishing their second round at Toukley.

Weather Delays Cause Havoc at NSW Junior Championships

(4:30pm - Thursday 7th July, 2016)

Play was suspended at 3:15pm at Shelly Beach Golf Club due to heavy rain, bringing a premature end to the third round of the NSW Junior Championships. It was the second weather delay of the day, after 1 hour and 20 minutes was lost just after 9:00am, once again due to heavy rain.

63 players managed to complete the third round, with a further 88 players still out on course when the heavens opened. As a result, the 2016 NSW Junior Championships at Shelly Beach Golf Club has been reduced to a 54 hole event.

All players who are yet to complete their third round will resume play at 7:30am on Friday morning. The final groups have 13 holes of golf to play, so providing there are no further weather delays, play will conclude at approximately 11:00am. The 2016 NSW Junior Championships Presentation will be held about 30 minutes after the final groupings finish their round.

The final round of the JNJG State Age Championship Plate at Toukley Golf Club WILL GO AHEAD as planned.

Exciting Finish Looms as NSW Junior Championship Reduced to 54 Holes

(5:30pm - Thursday 7th July, 2016)

In the limited golf that was played on Thursday, New Zealander Shaun Campbell managed to grab a share of the lead in the NSW Junior Boys Championships, picking up two early birdies to be on the only player under par for the round. He sits at +3 for the tournament, tied for the lead with Andre Lautee (Victoria), with the leading group waiting to hit their tee shots on the 6th hole when play was finally suspended. The pair have opened up a two shot lead on Queenslander Jed Morgan, with four players a further shot back including the leading NSW Players Jason Hong (Concord), Corey Jones (Pymble / Shelly Beach) and Reid Brown (Pymble / Wingham).

The NSW Junior Girls Championship is also set to go down to the wire, with 15 Year Old Steph Kyriacou (St Michael's) looking for her maiden JNJG Major Title. (8:00pm - Wednesday 6th July, 2016)

Victorian Andre Lautee has emerged on top of the leaderboard after a brutal second round of the NSW Junior Championships at a windswept Shelly Beach and Toukley Golf Clubs. 50km/h winds greeted the players and stayed around all day, making scoring extremely difficult and par a good score on all holes! The 16 year old fired a second round four over par 76 at Toukley Golf Club to lead a star-studded field by one stoke at three over par.

Four players finished the second round in a tie for second at four over par, including Kiwi Shaun Campbell (77 - Toukley), Queenslanders Jed Morgan (79 - Toukley) and Bailey Arnott (76 - Shelly Beach), and leading NSW Player and Concord member Jason Hong (76 - Shelly Beach). Making their move in the extremely difficult conditions were Shelly Beach members and local hopes Jordan Garner (Pennant Hills) and Corey Jones (Pymble). Morgan Makes his Mark at the NSW Junior Boys

(6:00pm - Tuesday 5th July, 2016)

Queenslander Jed Morgan has continued to show his good recent form, firing a three under par 68 to take the early lead in the 2016 NSW Junior Boys Championship. Playing Shelly Beach GC on the opening day, the 16 year old had six birdies and opened up a one shot lead over a NSW surprise packet. The Queenslander led by as many as three shots late in his first round before a three-putt bogey on the final green left him one in front of a wall of chasers.

That surprise packet was the Far South Coast's Jack Glasson (Bermagui), who fired the best round of the day at Toukley, a two under par 70 on the tight and testy layout. The 17 year old had five birdies in the best round of his JNJG career, looking to go out a champion in his final NSW Junior Championship before turning 18.

There were a HOST of players a further shot back, with Clayton Small (Maitland), Andre Lautee (Victoria) and Shaun Campbell (NZ) opening with a one under par 70 at Shelly Beach to share third. One under par seemed a popular score on the first day, with Jack Tanner (South Australia), Tyler Duncan (Queensland) Bailey Arnott (Queensland), Jason Hong (Concord), Jackson Jubelin (Port Macquarie) and Corey Rae (Cromer) all shooting one under par 71s at Toukley Golf Club.

The players swap courses on Wednesday for the second round before returning to Shelly Beach for the final two rounds. The results from the opening day of play and the draw for round two can be found on the JNJG website by clicking the links below.

Tight at the Top of the NSW Junior Girls

(6:00pm - Tuesday 5th July, 2016)

Canberra local Chloe Thornton (NSW GC) handled the cold and wet Canberra-like conditions the best on Tuesday morning to take the early lead in the 2016 NSW Junior Girls Championships. Thornton was matched late on day one by 15 Year Old Steph Kyriacou (St Michael's) who also fired an opening round of one under par to share the lead on a difficult opening day on the NSW Central Coast.

NSW GC member Thornton got off to a flier at Shelly Beach, starting the tournament with three straight birdies to make the turn at three under par. Unfortunately for the 16 year old, the putter turned cold as the weather warmed up on the back nine, finishing with a one under par 74. At Toukley, it was 15 year old Kyriacou making headlines, with three back nine birdies seeing her surge up the leaderboard to finish equal top! They lead recent Qld Junior Amateur Champion Momoka Kobori (New Zealand) by one stroke, after the Kiwi had four birdies and four bogies in her even par 74 at Toukley on the opening day.

There is a host of players close behind, with Lisa Edgar (Queensland), June Song (Avondale), Kara Williams (Avondale) and 12 Year Old Darae Chung (New Zealand) opening the tournament with rounds of one over par to share 4th.

The players swap courses on Wednesday for the second round before returning to Shelly Beach for the final two rounds. The results from the opening day of play and the draw for round two can be found on the JNJG website by clicking the links below.

Tournament Information

The NSW Junior Championships is officially just around the corner. Please see below answers to all the Frequently Ask Questions (FAQs) that you may have ahead of the tournament.

Tournament Registration

Tournament Registration is from 3:00pm - 6:00pm on Monday 4th July at Shelly Beach Golf Club, and YES it is compulsory.

The Draw

The draw will be officially released in the clubhouse at Shelly Beach Golf Club on Monday 4th July at 3:00pm. It will also be emailed and published on the JNJG website at 6:00pm on the Monday evening. We appreciate and understand that many parents will be trying to plan the week of travel around more than one junior golfer, so what we can do right now, is explain to everyone the break-up of the draw, and where each Age Group will be playing over the first two days.

Throughout the first two rounds, all players will play in their own age division. We do have 260 players spread across 12 Age Divisions, so trying to split the Age Groups to ensure the field size is manageable at both courses is quite tricky. As it stands right now we have 131 players at one course and 129 players at the other course before they swap over for the second round.

Yardage Books

To increase the Tournament Experience at JNJG events for all competitors, we are currently having both Shelly Beach GC and Toukley GC professionally marked and mapped for the Tournament. Professional Yardage Books from the company ProSecrets will be available to purcahse on the Monday at Tournament Registration (and hopefully over the weekend from both courses when you have practice rounds). The Yardage Books will be available for $20 and for this price you will get BOTH Golf Courses included.

Practice Rounds

Practice Rounds are available at both tournament venues over the weekend and on the Monday prior to the tournament beginning. As you can imagine, with 260 players as well as members using the course prior to it closing for the NSW Junior Championships, spaces and times are limited. To book a practice round, make sure you contact the pro shop directly.

Warm Up Areas and Driving Ranges

Shelly Beach GC and Toukley GC both have good putting greens and short game facilities. Both golf courses also have warm up ranges and golf balls will be available to be purchased for players to use to warm up. Please note – Due to the length of these areas, players are only allowed to use wedges and short irons. The use of long irons and woods is not permitted.

As a result, JNJG have held discussions with two local driving ranges and discounts will be given at these driving ranges for all juniors competing in the NSW Junior Championships. Swingers Golf Driving Range and Supa Putt and Bateau Bay Driving Range are the two venues and more information will be handed out about them at the Tournament Registration.

JNJG Hoodies

Last but not least.......JNJG is excited to announce it's very own range of merchandise will be sold at the NSW Junior Championships, with very warm (what appropriate timing) JNJG Hoodies available for purchase. There will be 3 different colours available, and these will be sold on a first come first served basis.

This is the first of what we hope to be a wide range JNJG clothing and accessories available to our juniors (and parents), so if you do miss out on a Hoodie at the State Champs, please tell us what other JNJG gear you would like to be able to buy!!

Keep practising hard, and see you all next Monday at the Tournament Registration.
