Armstrong Hangs On to Defeat Charging Chambers

(Monday 13th June, 2016 - 7:00pm)

Overnight leader Josh Armstrong (The Lakes) has backed up his opening round 65 with a final round 68 to win the Boys Division of the 2016 Macarthur Junior Masters at Campbelltown. Starting with a four shot lead, the 16 year old gave his rivals no chance, making birdies on the 3rd, 4th, and 8th to extend his lead to 6 shots. There were plenty of contenders in the chasing pack, but it came as a surprise to see the youngest of them all, 14 year old Ethan Chambers (Bonnie Doon) emerge from the back. The 15 year old only dropped one shot in the final round, alongsid five birdies including one on the last, to finish with a career low four under par 66 and solo second. It was also good enough for a seven shot victory in the Boys 14/15 Years Division.

Maitland's Clayton Small also impressed, finishing outright third and under par for the first time at a JNJG tournament, backing up his opening round 69 with an even par 70. Earlier in the day, Jeff Fan (Avondale) fired a one over par 71 to cruise to victory in the Boys 13 Years and Under Division, winning by seven shots whilst the Stableford Division was won by Gabriel Gurmaij-Chung (Castle Hill) with an incredible 93 points.Bryce Pickin (Avondale) had looked to finish his JNJG career in style, three under par on his back nine and even par for the round, before a Quadruple Bogey 8 on his last hole saw him finish with a 74 :(

Celina's Close Call at Campbelltown

(Monday 13th June, 2016 - 2:00pm)

Celina Yuan (The Australian) has held on to defeat the fast finishing Grace Kim (Avondale) by one stroke to claim the Girls Division of the 2016 Macarthur Junior Masters at Campbelltown.

Yuan shared the overnight lead with Amu Chu (The Australian), but it was never a comfortable lead for any player in that final group with as many as 10 players within four shots of the as players entered the back nine. Starting on the back nine and making the turn at level par, Yuan picked up birdies on the 3rd and 4th to regain the lead after Kim flew up the leaderboard and had taken the outright lead, making five birdies in her opening 12 holes. A couple of late bogies left Yuan standing on the final hole with a three shot lead, and in the end she needed every one of them after making a double bogey six on the 9th.

It was Yuan's first JNJG title of the year, whilst Kim was left with the 14/15 Years Age Division Title for finishing second overall. Bella Kil (Avondale) finished in outright third, one shot clear of the impressive Monica Johnson (Moore Park), who had her best overall finish at a JNJG tournament only three shots off the overall lead in solo fourth. The best of the younger girls was Yuka Lin (Cammeray), with the 13 Year Old firing rounds of 77 and 76 to win her division by a whopping 10 strokes.

A+ Armstrong Assumes Control at Campbelltown

(Sunday 12th June, 2016)

On a bitterly cold morning at Campbelltown Golf Club that tested many of the states best players, Josh Armstrong (The Lakes) took control of the tournament with a blistering hot stretch early in his round. After starting on the 10th hole and making the turn at even par, Armstrong turned up the heat on his rivals with some amazing golf. A 15 foot birdie putt on the 1st (his 10th), was followed by a tap in birdie on the second. The Canberra local, obviously used to the cold conditions, then hit a 7-Iron to 15 feet on the short par 5 3rd hole, and converted the eagle putt. Two more birdies followed on the 4th and 5th, and all of a sudden the 16 year old had played his last five holes in 6 under par!! He finished with a 65 to open up a four shot lead over Clayton Small (Maitland) and impressive 15 year old Ethan Chambers (Bonnie Doon). Joining them in the final group is Josh Gadd (Concord) who was left to rue a very cold putter in his opening round of 70. In the Boys 13 Years Division, Brij Ingrey (Newcastle) will take his very first 18 hole lead into a JNJG Tournament after opening with a seven over par 77, which included a triple bogey 8 on the 7th!

A host of chances still remain in the Girls Division, with the Top 10 Players separated by only four shots. The Australian Golf Club pair of Amy Chu and Celina Yuan share the lead after both girls opened with an even par 71. In form players Bella Kil (Avondale) and Steph Kyriacou (St Michaels) continue to impress, and will play in the final group starting one shot behind after 72s on day one. Kyriacou leads Monica Johnson (Moore Park) by one in the Girls 14/15 Years Division, who is still searching for her maiden JNJG title. 13 Year Old Yuka Lin (Cammeray) was also impressive on Day 1, firing a 77 to take control of the 13 Years and Under Division.

Play begins on Monday at 6:51am, after one group failed to finish the opening round as darkness rolled in.
