Fan and Vasquez Claim First Major of the Year

(Friday 8th January - 7:30pm)

Chris Fan (Avondale) and Danni Vasquez (Bonnie Doon) have claimed the rain shortened Harvey Norman Week of Golf after storming to victory with fantastic final rounds.

Starting the day three shots behind the overnight leader, Fan got off to the perfect start with back to back birdies on his opening two holes. A bogey on the 6th briefly slowed his momentum before birdies on 8, 12, 13 and 15 saw him rocket all the way into the outright lead. After finding huge trouble on the 16th and staring a double bogey in the face, Fan made a miraculous up and down for bogey to maintain a share of the lead. Playing in the second to last group, he had a chance to post the clubhouse lead when arriving at the 18th before taking and the wrong club, flying the green, and ending up on the putting green over the back at the par 3 finishing hole. After taking his relief, Fan was left with a near impossible up and down, before playing the impossible chip and safely making his par.

Playing in the final group, Darcy Boyd (Toukley) and and Nathan Barbieri (Monash) took it in turns to take the outright lead throughout the day, but from the 13th hole the early leaders had been caught by the fast finishing Fan. Needing to play the final five holes in even par to force a playoff, neither could, and when Barbieri made his second bogey of the final five holes to finish at +3, Darcy Boyd was handed the 17 Years and Over title and outright second overall.

The story of the dayhowever belonged to two 16 year old boys after Harry Doig (Ryde Parramatta) and Brandon Shong (Castle Hill) finished the tournament tied at +6 in their age division. After playing the 18th hole four times and each making four comfortable pars, the pair headed to the 10th, but after pars on 10 and 17, they found themselves at the 18th again for the 7th playoff hole. Once more they went to the 10/17/18 rotation, and after an incredible 2 hours and 10 straight holes were halved in par, the boys were declared joint winners.

The girls division was a more one sided affair, with Danni Vasquez (Bonnie Doon) making it back to back Harvey Norman titles after winning the Sub Junior Event in 2015. This time she did it in style, building a 10 shot lead after making 7 birdies in her opening 15 holes. A few errors late on saw the winning margin cut to 6, but it was a breakout performance by the 15 year old and her biggest victory of her career.

Kirsten Convoy (The Australian) ended up in second place, a consistent 75 giving her the Girls 17 Years division whilst Chloe Thornton ended up claiming the 16 years title despite not being able to make a birdie in the final round.

On behalf of JNJG, thank you to everyone for your patience after the rain made it an extremely difficult week.

Play CANCELLED at Killara

(Wednesday 6th January - 6:00pm)

We hate to bring more bad news to everyone, but the decision has already been made to CANCEL the 4th round of the Harvey Norman Junior Week of Golf at Killara Golf Club.

With more than 200mm of rain falling on the golf course since Monday afternoon, the golf course is currently unplayable and in many parts inaccessible for green staff. Photo's have been posted on the JNJG facebook page that were taken today at Killara Golf Club.

We remain hopeful that the weather starts to break up overnight and throughout tomorrow, allowing the green staff at Pennant Hills a chance to work on the golf course to make it playable on Friday.

A new draw for Friday will be posted tomorrow. This draw will be completely different to the last couple of days as it will be a two-tee start at Pennant Hills on Friday.

No decision has been made in regards to the 4th round of the Sub Junior Division, due to be played at North Ryde on Thursday. A decision will be made by 6am on Thursday morning as to whether the 4th round will be played at North Ryde.

Round 4 Update - Killara

(Wednesday 6th January - 10:00am)

The draw for Thursday at Killara is now on the JNJG website. First tee time has once again been pushed back to 7:30am for the same reasons as yesterday. You can find the link below. Also below are the current tournament results, for those who can't remember how they went on Monday (which seems like ages ago now).

A course inspection will be taking place this afternoon at Killara and a further update will be made then. We're desperate to get back on the course, we just need this rain to stop.

Play CANCELLED at Avondale

(Wednesday 6th January - 4:50am)

As frustrating as it is, play has been cancelled for a second straight day at the Harvey Norman Week of Golf.

The tournament has now been reduced to 54 holes, with the weather expected to clear on Thursday and Friday for the final two rounds (we can only hope).

The draw for Thursday at Killara will remain the same as the draw for today was supposed to be at Avondale, with first tee off scheduled for 7:30am. This will be updated on the JNJG website this morning.

See you all tomorrow!

Play CANCELLED at Cromer

(Tuesday 5th January - 7:20am)

The second round of the Harvey Norman Week of Golf at Cromer Golf Club has been cancelled.

With more than 30mm of rain falling on the course overnight and this morning, and plenty more expected throughout the day, the decision has been made to cancel the round. With this event being unique in the fact that the tournament is at 5 different courses in 5 days and completing a round on the following day not at all possible, the long rain delay to start the morning meant all 136 players starting and finishing the round was just not possible :(

The tournament will now be a 72 hole event and the round three draw at Avondale will be seeded off the round one scores at Monash. The draw will be published on the JNJG website, as well as emailed to players, as soon as it is completed.

The only thing we don't have control over is the weather and we must have used all our luck up with the weather Gods yesterday.

Fingers crossed we're good to go at Avondale tomorrow morning.

Monash 1 def JNJG Juniors 0

(Monday 4th January, 2016)

Horrible weather and an extremely difficult (at the same time simply beautiful) golf course led to a tough day for all at Monash Country Club in the opening round of the 2016 Harvey Norman Junior Week of Golf. With more than 50mm of rain falling on certain parts of Sydney causing many sporting events around the state to be cancelled, 136 Junior Golfers braved the difficult conditions and finished the opening round without any weather delay at all.

And after many of the golfers were battled from pillar to post on the demanding layout, Toukley's Darcy Boyd ended the day with his nose in front after an up and down round of 74. The 17 year old had five birdies to counter three bogies and two double bogies, to take a one shot lead into Tuesday's second round. On a congested leaderboard, Pymble's Joseph Trinder sits alongside Nathan Barbieri in a share of second after opening with matching three over par 75s, whilst Izzy Melia (Charlestown) and Andy Richards (Pennant Hills) are a shot further back at plus four. Whilst the tough scoring conditions meant many players played themselves out of contention on the opening day, 38 players are within seven shots of the lead and with 72 holes still to play, the winner can, and possibly will, come from anywhere. One of the other standouts on the first day was 15 Year Old Jack Walden, his 68 clearly the best Nett score of the opening round and one of only two players to beat their handicap in the brutal conditions.

The Girls also found it tough going in the difficult conditions, with Chloe Thornton and Danni Vasquez sharing the lead after opening with five over par 78s. The girls ground their way to the top of the leaderboard after matching each other with even par back nine's as the rain swept back across the course. Vasquez is looking to win back to back Harvey Norman Titles, after claiming the Sub Junior Division in 2015. New JNJG member Ko Eun Lee (Bankstown) also impressed, with the 15 Year Old the only junior girl to beat her handicap on the opening day after finishing with a Nett 71.

Play resumes on Tuesday at 7am, this time on the tight and testing Cromer layout.

North Shore and Northern Beaches set for Harvey Norman Week of Golf

(Sunday 3rd January, 2016)

The first JNJG Major of the New Year is taking place this week, with the 2016 Harvey Norman Week of Golf moving to the North Shore and Northern Beaches for the first time in many years. More than 225 players will be taking part, with the tournament split in Junior (15-18 Years) and Sub Junior (14 Years and Under) divisions.

The tournament is one of the only 90 hole Junior events in the world, with 10 of the best courses on the North Side of Sydney playing host to the week long event.

The Junior's will play the following courses for the week in an event that is part of the World Amateur Golf Ranking system....

Monday - Monash
Tuesday - Cromer
Wednesday - Avondale
Thursday - Killara
Friday - Pennant Hills

The Girls Division promises to be a closely fought affair with plenty of chances, headed by NSW Development Squad members Grace Kim (Avondale GC), Chloe Thornton (NSW GC), Madeleine Nurdie (St Michael's GC) and Danni Vasquez (Bonnie Doon GC). Local girl Bella Kil (Avondale GC) is also a big chance to claim the title, whilst a host of the departing 17 and 18 year old girls will also be fighting for the title in their farewell JNJG Tournament.

The Boys Division is also going to be close, and with many of the top juniors in NSW away at tournaments in Victoria and South Australia in the busy month of January, the door is slightly ajar for an upset on the Northern Beaches. 18 Year Olds and recent high-school graduates Joseph Trinder (Pymble GC), Nathan Barbieri (Monash CC) and Andrew Richards (Pennant Hills GC) will be looking for a win in their final event, whilst the in-form James Conran (Duntryleague GC), Jay  Mackenzie (Ballina GC), Darcy Boyd (Toukley GC) and Izzy Melia (Charlestown GC) will also fancy their chances this week.

The draw for the opening two rounds has been released, with the final three rounds on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday being a seeded draw.
