Finals Day of Fayde Junior Matchplay at Mount Broughton

(Sunday 25th - Monday 26th September, 2016)

Another fantastic tournament comes to an end. Thank you to the Mount Broughton Golf and Country Club for hosting such a good event, and an even bigger thank you to Fayde Golf for their constant support of Junior Golf in NSW.

Well done to all the winners and those who went down in the final. A full recap of all the pool matches and a detailed description of the finals in each division can be read below.

Boys 12 Years and Under

Match 1 - Number 1 seed Jeffrey Guan (Bexley) was the biggest winner in the opening round matches, whilst number 2 seed Brij Ingrey (Newcastle) suffered a shock loss to the inform Harry Atkinson (Kurri Kurri).

Match 2 - Jeffrey Guan won again whilst Sebastian Sara (Bexley) fought for a half against Bowen Small (Maitland). They'll play off tomorrow for a spot in the final against Ali Rachid (Bardwell Valley) who has already qualified after back to back wins.

Match 3 - Jeffrey Guan made it to the final but needed 18 holes to defeat Sebastian Sara. He'll come up against Ali Rachid who warmed up for the final finishing all square against Brij Ingrey.

12 Years and Under Final - Jeffrey Guan never trailed in the final, closing out the match on the 16th hole. Consistent as ever, the recent NSW PSSA Champion made very few mistakes to defeat a gallant Ali Rachid who never gave up and made his good mate earn the win. Jeffrey Guan def Ali Rachid 3&2.

Pot A - Jeffrey Guan (3 wins), Sebastian Sara (1 win, 1 square, 1 loss), Jye Halls (1 win, 2 losses), Bowen Small (1 square, 2 losses).
Pot B - Brij Ingrey (1 square, 2 losses), Ali Rachid (2 wins, 1 sqaure), Joshua Madeleine (2 wins, 1 loss), Harry Atkinson (1 win, 2 losses).

Boys 13 Years

Match 1 - Comfortable wins for the top seeds Jeff Fan (Avondale) and Harvey Remfrey (Ballina), whilst Bart Carroll (Wagga) had to fight all day to defeat Sam Bowgett (Monash) on the final hole.

Match 2 - Jeff Fan made it two from two, but Brock Speechley (Cronulla) and Brad Jones (Shelly Beach) can still force a playoff in Pot A with wins tomorrow. Harvey Remfrey and Bart Carroll will play off in Pot B for a spot in the final, with Carroll only needing to halve the match to advance.

Match 3 - Jeff Fan qualified for the final but was made to work for it by the brave Brock Speechley, with the final pool match finishing all square. It set up a showdown with long term JNJG rival Harvey Remfrey, after the Ballina boy defeated Bart Carroll on the 16th.

13 Years Final - What a match!! The 13 Year Olds traded 7 birdies between them over the 18 holes in one of the best matches of the tournament. Ballina Junior Harvey Remfrey got off to a hot start with two birdies in the opening three holes and was 3up for much of the front nine. At 3 down through 11, Jeff Fan needed to turn the momentum around and he did just that with three back nine birdies of his own, and his birdie on the 16th actually gave him a 1up lead. Remfrey responded making a par on the difficult 17th and they headed to the last all square. A miraculous shot out of the left rough that nearly went in for an eagle two left Remfrey with a tap in birdie and the win!! I'm sure it won't be the last time that these two battle it out at a JNJG event. Harvey Remfrey def Jeff Fan 1up.

Pot A - Jeff Fan (2 wins, 1 square), Brock Speechley (1 win, 1 square, 1 loss), Brad Jones (1 win, 1 square, 1 loss), Daniel Eun (1 sqaure, 2 losses).
Pot B - Harvey Remfrey (2 wins, 1 square), Bart Carroll (2 wins, 1 loss), Sam Bowgett (1 win, 1 square, 1 loss), Harry Cleare (3 losses).

Boys 14 Years

Match 1 - Big wins for top seeds Tom Heaton (The Australian) and Harrison Crowe (St Michaels), whilst Corey Lamb (Branxton) also impressed winning easily in his opening match.

Match 2 - Harrison Crowe has qualified for the final after back to back wins in his division regardless of the result tomorrow. Tom Heaton is almost there, however Oli Payne (Port Macquarie) and Josh Fuller (Muswellbrook) can still sneak into the final if results go their way.

Match 3 - Harrison Crowe halved his match against Lachlan Chamberlain (Federal) to remain undefeated. He'll play Tom Heaton in the final who made it a perfect 3 from 3 in Pool B.

14 Years Final - A consistent back nine when it mattered most saw Tom Heaton claim the Boys 14 Years Final. Not much separated the two standout 14 year old boys over the front nine as they made the turn All Square, and Harrison Crowe edged in front for the first time with a birdie on the 11th. But that was the last time he led, with Heaton winning four of the next five holes to close out the match on the 16th. Tom Heaton def Harrison Crowe 3&2.

Pot A - Harrison Crowe (2 wins, 1 square), Lachlan Chamberlain (1 square, 2 losses), Corey Lamb (1 win, 2 losses), Josh Robards (2 wins, 1 loss).
Pot B - Tom Heaton (3 wins), Oli Payne (1 win, 2 losses), Josh Bell (1 win, 2 losses), Josh Fuller (1 win, 2 losses).

Boys 15 Years

Match 1 - Ethan Chambers (Bonnie Doon) needed a birdie on the final hole to defeat the gallant Adam Coull (Bankstown) in the match of the day! Luka Brucic (St Michaels) and Jackson Hall (Wollongong) did it easier in their opening Pool B matches.

Match 2 - Anthony Tan (Monash) produced the performance of the day to keep his hopes alive. Aidan Powter (St Michaels) sits on top of the Pool but will need a result in his final match to guarantee a spot in the final. Pot B sees the showdown between the unbeaten Luka Brucic and Jackson Hall (Wollongong) for a place in the decider.

Match 3 - Aidan Powter secured the half he needed against Ethan Chambers to make the final. It was just as close in Pool B, with Luka Brucic making the final defeating Jackson Hall on the 18th, in a match where neither player was ever more than 1 up in the entire round!

15 Years Final - ACT resident Luka Brucic recorded his first win of the 2016 season and booked a seat on the Bus to Bonville with a tight and hard fought win over Aidan Powter in an all St Michaels Final. Teamed up with self proclaimed super caddy Giselle Vigna, Brucic never trailed in the final and made less mistakes throughout the round to win the match on the 17th. Luka Brucic def Aidan Powter 2&1.

Pot A - Ethan Chambers (1 win, 1 square, 1 loss), Aidan Powter (2 wins, 1 square), Anthony Tan (2 wins, 1 loss), Adam Coull (3 losses).
Pot B - Luka Brucic (3 wins), Jackson Hall (2 wins, 1 loss), Andy Li (3 losses), Adam Naaman (1 win, 2 losses).

Boys 16 Years

Match 1 - Brad Doherty (Oatlands) recorded the biggest win in the opening match, with Jye Pickin (Avondale), Chris Fan (Avondale) and Brandon Shong (Castle Hill) also victorious.

Match 2 - Jye Pickin has qualified for the final after two convincing victories. Chris Fan has control of Pot B with back to back wins, but Brad Doherty and Clayton Small (Maitland) can still qualify if results go their way.

Match 3 - Jye Pickin continued his impressive run of form to finish the pool matches with a perfect record. In the final he'll come up against another player with a perfect record in Chris Fan, the Avondale Junior won through to the final with a hard fought win over Brad Doherty.

16 Years Final - Chris Fan outlasted fellow Avondale member Jye Pickin with some impressive ball striking to claim the Boys 16 Years Title. After a slow start, Fan steadied the ship and played consistent golf throughout the match and was never in trouble on the back nine. The Par 5s proved the difference, with Fan winning all five Par 5s to close out the match on the 15th. Chris Fan def Jye Pickin 4&3.

Pot A - Jye Pickin (3 wins), Luke Ferrier (3 losses), Brandon Shong (2 wins, 1 loss), Kyle Underwood (1 win, 2 losses).
Pot B - Chris Fan (3 wins), Brad Doherty (1 win, 2 losses), Weiliang Wang (1 win, 2 losses), Clayton Small (1 win, 2 losses).

Boys 17 Years

Match 1 - Billy Watson (Long Reef) cause the biggest shock of the opening day defeating Golf Australia National Squad member Josh Armstrong (The Lakes). NSW Junior Team Members Jordie Garner (Castle Hill) and Jay Mackenzie (Ballina) recorded wins, whilst Josh Gadd (Concord) and James Conran (Duntryleague) finished all square.

Match 2 - The big shock of the day, with 8th seed Billy Watson qualifying for the final with a match to spare!! He'll play the winner of the showdown between NSW Junior State Team Members Jordie Garner and Jay Mackenzie, with Mackenzie only needing a halve to make the final.

Match 3 - Josh Armstrong and Josh Gadd recorded big wins, but it wasn't enough as Bill Watson topped the group on head to head matches. The other finalist was decided after Jay Mackenzie defeated Jordan Garner in what could only be described as a scrappy match.

Boys 17 Years Final - Billy Watson couldn't quite recapture the form he showed on day one to knock out Golf Australia HP Squad member Josh Armstrong, going down in the final to Ballina Junior Jay Mackenzie. After scraping through to the final despite not being at his best, Mackenzie found the form that made him the number one player at the Australian Interstate Series, playing his last 7 holes in three under par, closing out the match with a birdie on the 14th hole. Jay Mackenzie def Billy Watson 5&4.

Pot A - Josh Armstrong (2 wins, 1 loss), James Conran (1 square, 2 losses), Josh Gadd (1 win, 1 square, 1 loss), Billy Watson (2 wins, 1 loss).
Pot B - Jay Mackenzie (3 wins), Jordan Garner (1 win, 1 square, 1 loss), Jackson Jubelin (1 win, 2 losses), Harry Doig (1 square, 2 losses).

Girls 15 Years and Under

Match 1 - It was a good morning for the top seeds with Grace Kim (Avondale), Kara Williams (Avondale), Steph Kyriacou (St Michaels), and June Song (Avondale) all recording first up wins.

Match 2 - Grace Kim cruised to a second straight win but hasn't quite qualified yet after Sophie Yip (Concord) kept her chance alive with an upset over Kara Williams. Steph Kyriacou and June Song made it two from two and play each other for a spot in the final on Monday morning.

Match 3 - After recently finishing 1-2 in the International Players Championship in Canada, Grace Kim and Steph Kyriacou will meet again in a final after both winning in Round Three. Kyriacou cruised to the final, whilst Kim was pushed all the way by Kara Williams in a very tight contest!

Girls 15/Under Final - Steph Kyriacou continued her recent good form with a convincing victory over Grace Kim. The St Michaels 15 year old led from the very first hole, finishing the match two under par after making four birdies including three on the back nine to shut the door on any posible comeback. Steph Kyriacou def Grace Kim 5&4.

Pot A - Grace Kim (2 wins), Kara Williams (1 win, 1 loss), Monica Johnson (2 losses), Sophie Yip (1 win, 1 loss).
Pot B - Steph Kyriacou (2 wins), June Song (2 wins), Yerin Kim (2 losses), Amber Thornton (2 losses).

Girls 16 Years and Over

Match 1 - Casey Cook (Tura Beach) caused an upset with a win over Bella Kil (Avondale), whilst Amy Chu (The Australian) edged Chloe Thornton (NSW GC) in the match of the day for the girls. There were also wins for top seeds and Australian GC Members Stef Hall and Celina Yuan.

Match 2 - Amy Chu made it two from two, but must get a result against Celina Yuan to qualify for the final. Stef Hall and Casey Cook sit atop Pool B after their brilliant match in Round 2 finished all square, whilst Kelsey Bennett (Mollymook) kept her chances alive with a second round win.

Match 3 - Celina Yuan made a big statement in defeating Amy Chu to top Pool A. Bella Kil bounced back to defeat Stef Hall which opened the door for Casey Cook and she took full advantage with a resounding win to make the final.

Girls 16/Over Final - Celina Yuan defeated the always improving Casey Cook in an exciting final. Despite dominating the JNJG circuit for many years, the Fayde Matchplay was one title that had always eluded Yuan, and to add that trophy to her impressive resume she had to be at her very best. Cook started with 9 straight pars to put the pressure right on the 17 year old, and in the end it was the three birdies the Australian GC member made that proved the difference, finishing the match on the par three 16th. Celina Yuan def Casey Cook 3&2.

Pot A - Celina Yuan (1 win, 1 square), Amy Chu (2 wins), Chloe Thornton (1 square, 1 loss), Sarah Johnson (2 losses).
Pot B - Stef Hall (1 win, 1 square), Bella Kil (2 losses), Casey Cook (1 win, 1 square), Kelsey Bennett (1 win, 1 loss).

Boys Handicap Div 1

Match 1 - Big wins in the first handicap division in all matches, with Isaac Fan (Cronulla), Josh Todd (Randwick), Eddie Ward (Port Kembla) and Brandon Vella (Camden) winning impressively.

Match 2 - Isaac Fan and Josh Todd will meet in Pot A to decide who makes the final. Pot B isn't quite as clear, with Eddie Ward in the box seat after back to back wins, but James Dickinson (Catalina) and Brandon Vella are both still in with a chance!

Match 3 - Josh Todd impressively defeated Isaac Fan to get out of his group with a perfect record. Pool B came down to the very last putt, with James Dickinson defeating Eddie Ward to advance on their head to head result.

Boys Handicap Div 1 Final - Youngster Josh Todd played exceptional golf throughout the tournament, defying his handicap, to defeat James Dickinson in the final. The 15 handicapper was an incredible 2 over par through 13 holes, which would be good enough to beat anybody, on any course, no matter what the event. Dickinson played well, but in the end giving 8 shots to his opponent proved too much. Josh Todd def James Dickinson 6&5.

Pot A - Isaac Fan (2 wins, 1 loss), Josh Todd (3 wins), Arki Valdy (1 win, 2 losses), Oliver Davis (3 losses).
Pot B - Blake Halls (1 win, 2 losses), Brandon Vella (1 win, 2 losses), James Dickinson (2 wins, 1 loss), Eddie Ward (2 wins, 1 loss).

Boys Handicap Div 2

Match 1 - Blade Gadd (Penrith) impressed with a 6&5 victory that would have tested even the players in the Scratch Divisions, whilst David Howard (Belconnen Magpies) had an easy win after his opponent thought the tournament started on Monday!!

Match 2 - Handicap Matchplay at it's finest!! All four players in Pot A can still qualify after identical 1 win, 1 loss records on day one. Blade Gadd and Riley Willcox (Belconnen Magpies) remain unbeaten in Pot B and playoff for a spot in the final in their group.

Match 3 - After missing his first match after getting the tournament dates wrong, Zach Senter incredibly won through to the final with back to back wins. He'll play Blade Gadd (Penrith) who impressed again for the third match in a row.

Boys Handicap Div 2 Final - Penrith junior Blade Gadd picked up his first major JNJG title, with a last hole victory over Zach Senter. Gadd wasn't as good as he had been throughout the Pool Matches, but did enough to secure the victory with a brilliant up and down on the final hole. It was still a fantastic result for Senter, who made the final after missing his opening match after getting the tournament dates wrong!! Blade Gadd def Zach Senter 1up.

Pot A - David Howard (1 win, 2 losses), Josh Battle (2 wins, 1 loss), Jack Walden (1 win, 2 losses), Zach Senter (2 wins, 1 loss).
Pot B - Sebastian Twaddell (1 win, 2 losses), Eden Middleton (1 square, 2 losses), Blade Gadd (3 wins), Riley Willcox (1 win, 1 square, 1 loss).

Boys Handicap Div 3

Match 1 - Tim Ryan (Highlands), Ethan Keane (Bonnie Doon) and Che Sandiford (Shoalhaven Heads) all started with a win, whilst Jackson Rogan (Cronulla) and Jamie Reay (NSW GC) finished all square.

Match 2 - In Pot A, Jackson Rogan and Jamie Reay are undefeated, whilst Tim Ryan is still a chance to qualify for the final. There's three lives chances in Pot B too, although Che Sandiford is looking good after back to back wins.

Match 3 - Jackson Rogan and Jamie Reay won again, meaning a sudden death playoff was required to determine the winner after the boys finished with identical records and a tie in their head to head match. Rogan won on the first playoff to win the right to play Che Sandiford who finished with a 3-0 record.

Boys Handicap Div 3 Final - Long time and regular JNJG competitor Jackson Rogan played his final NSW Junior Matchplay and finished with a win, defeating Che Sandiford in a high quality match. The Cronulla junior got the jump on his rival early, and after winning three straight holes to finish the front nine the match was as good as finished. Sandiford fought hard on the back nine but couldn't get any closer than 4 holes down, finally conceding the match on the 15th green. Jackson Rogan def Che Sandiford 4&3.

Pot A - Stuart Phair (3 losses), Jamie Reay (2 wins, 1 square), Jackson Rogan (2 wins, 1 square), Tim Ryan (1 win, 2 losses).
Pot B - Josh Speechley (1 win, 2 losses), Jake Reay (1 win, 2 losses), Che Sandiford (3 wins), Ethan Keane (1 win, 2 losses).

Girls Handicap Division

Match 1 - Isabelle Hawes (Royal Canberra) was the standout in a 5&4 win, whilst Gabbi Beohm (NSW GC), Silka Solomon (Yowani) and Selena Bosevski (Port Kembla) also picked up wins.

Match 2 - Selena Bosevski and Silka Solomon will battle it out for top spot in Pot A. The winner of that match between the two unbeaten girls could play anyone, with Gabbi Beohm undefeated, but Lily Pierce and Isabelle Hawes still a chance of making it through to the final.

Match 3 - Selena Bosevski and Silka Solomon incredibly finished all square, which saw Selena through to the final. Silka incredibly finished unbeaten, but it still wasn't enough to qualify through a tough group!! The other group was just as close, with Isabelle Hawes winning a playoff to make the final after she finished equal top with Lily Pierce and Gabbi Beohm.

Girls Handicap Division Final - It was probably appropriate that the tightest division of the entire week had the tightest final, with young Illawarra Junior Selena Bosevski defeating Canberra Junior Isabelle Hawes on the first extra hole. Both girls finished the 18 holes well under their handicaps in a high quality match, with Hawes fighting back from three down with six holes to play to force overtime. Her run come to end though, with 16 handicapper Bosevski making a rock solid par on the first playoff hole to secure the title. Selena Bosevski def Isabelle Hawes 19 Holes.

Pot A - Claire Shin (3 losses), Yuka Lin (1 win, 1 square, 1 loss), Selena Bosevski (2 wins, 1 square), Silka Solomon (1 win, 2 squares).
Pot B - Lily Pierce (2 wins,1 loss), Gabbi Beohm (2 wins, 1 loss), Tylah Saifoloi (3 losses), Isabelle Hawes (2 wins, 1 loss).
