Tom Heaton and Angelina Gong win at Tallwoods

(Wednesday 4th May, 2016)

Tom Heaton (Woonona High School) and Angelina Gong (St George Girls High School) have claimed the 2016 JNJG NSW All Schools Junior Championship at Tallwoods Golf Club. Rhys Vella (Clancy Catholic College) and Charlotte Huynh (MLC Burwood) took home the overall Nett Prizes, with these four players being chosen to represent NSW at the Australian U/15 Schools Championships in December.

Joining these four in the NSW team for the innaugural interstate school event were the overall Runner Ups Jackson Hall (Heathcote High School) and Maddy Hagerty (St John Paul II College Schofields), and overall Nett Runner Ups William Buckley (St Gregory's College) and Charlotte Campbell (Narrabeen Sports High School).

Tom Heaton (Woonona High School) headed into the final round tied for the lead with Harvey Remfrey (Xavier Catholic College Ballina), with both players getting off to solid starts on the shortened Tallwoods layout. Heaton picked up birdies on the 3rd and 5th holes, with Remfrey also making a birdie on the Par 5 5th. The tournament then changed dramatically in the space of two holes, when Year 8 student Remfrey took a double bogey on the 6th and a triple bogey on the 7th ending his chances. Heaton remained steady, adding four further back nine birdies after dropping two shots around the turn, finishing with a four under par 68 and a three shot victory. Flying into second place was Jackson Hall (Heathcote High School), who shot a round of the tournament 66 which included a five under par 31 on the back nine!! Remfrey bounced back to finish in third spot and also claim the Year 8 title, whilst Jacob Dundas (West Wallsend High School) finished as the Year 7 champion.

Whilst Heaton led from start to finish in the boys event, Angelina Gong (St George Girls High School) came from behind to clinch the girls division in a nail-biting finish. Playing in the final group but starting the day five shots behind the overnight leaders, Gong played steady golf throughout, finishing with a round of the day 79. It looked a race in two before the players went out, with Year 9 Girls Maddy Hagerty (St John Paull II College Schofields) and Piper Prince (Cardiff High School) comfortably in front, but they were overtaken by the fast finishing Year 8 Student. Gong ended up with a one stroke victory over Hagerty, with Prince a shot further back in third. The Year 7 Winner was also the Girls Overall Nett Winner, with Charlotte Huynh (MLC Burwood) taking home the prize.

Beautiful Day at Forster for Round 1

(Tuesday 3rd May, 2016)

A beautiful day greeted all players on the opening day of the 2016 JNJG NSW All School Junior Golf Championships at Forster Golf Club. A huge field of more than 110 players, almost double the size of the event in 2015, played on a well presented golf course that proved difficult for the players.

Tom Heaton (Woonona HS) and Harvey Remfrey (Xavier College Ballina) have taken a share of the lead after opening with one over par 67's on the par 66 layout. Heaton was steady like normal making one birdie, whilst Remfrey had three birdies in his first round. They two regular JNJG competitors take a three shot lead into the second round, with Josh Bell (Marcellin College Randwick) and Oli Payne (Mackillop College Port Macquarie) opening with matching four over par 70s. The best Nett score of the day belonged to the in-form Jeshurun Pillay (Glenwood High School), with the 19 handicapper shooting an incredible 75 which included four birdies!! Pillay has already dropped his handicap by five shots in the past four weeks, and continued to ride the good form wave at Forster.

The girls division promised to be a closely fought affair and it has proven just that, with Maddy Hagerty (St John Paul II College Schofields) leading by one stroke after an opening round of 83. In second place was Piper Prince (Cardiff High School) who started with an 84. Charlotte Huynh (MLC Burwood) was on fire in the opening round, a Nett 62 opening a five shot lead in the Nett division from Tilly Torrevillas (Willoughby Girls High School).

Round Two continues at Tallwoods Golf Course tomorrow, with all players required to register before 8:00am for the shot gun start. Players will be required to move out on course by 8:15am.
