Round 1 leaders Josh Armstrong (The Lakes) and Hannah Park (Dunheved) continued their form into the final day of play to take out the Overall Boys and Girls Championships at the Wagga Wagga Junior Masters.

Park fired a 3 over, 77 to go with her round 1 score of 2 under 72 for total of 149 (+1).  She finished 2 shots ahead of Bonnie Doon’s Danni Vasquez.

The Boys 13 Years and Under division was another close fought battle but it was Avondale’s Jefferson Fan who came out on top with a solid final round of 76 to finish on 154 (+10).  Fellow Avondale member Ethan Chambers was runner up on a count back with 157.  It was Wyong’s Brad Jones who topped the nett event in this division finishing with a phenomenal 2 round total of 133 (-11).

It was a close race in the Boys 14 and 15 Years with Josh Armstrong taking the overall while Ethan Keane and Josh Gadd were both 1 shot further back.  Keane claimed the Scratch Runner Up prize on a count back but Gadd’s rounds were still good enough for him to secure the nett prize for the division over Monash’s Jack Glasson on a count back, both on 142.

It was Duntryleague’s James Conran who claimed the Boys 16 Years and Over title after two solid rounds of 73, giving him a total of 146 (+2).  Victorian Liam Gransden finished 2 shots further back on 148 to claim second place.  Parkes junior Sam Turner took out the nett honours on 139 (-5).

With Hannah Park and Danni Vasquez dominating the Girls 15 Years and Under it was Belmont’s Mackensie Toole that took out the nett on 145 (-3), 6 shots ahead of Runner Up Gabrielle Beohm (NSW).

St Michaels junior Eleena Kyriacou booked her seat on the bus to Bonville after taking out the Girls 16 Years and Over on 156 (+8).  She finished 1 shot ahead of Laura Cummings (Cowra) and Madeleine Nurdi (St Michaels).  Brianna Baird (Manly) claimed victory in the nett with a 2 round total of 146 (-2).

There were some phenomenal scores recorded in the Boys and Girls Stableford divisions this weekend.  Issac Fan (Bexley) crushed the rest of the competition with an impressive 36 hole total of 83 points. Kareela’s Portia Hill was another who made the most of the great conditions with a solid 75 points for the tournament.

This years event was another success thanks to the hard work and effort from all of the staff and volunteers from the Wagga Wagga Country Club.  The course was in fantastic condition and the weather played along most of the time. JNJG would like to thank all of those people who made the weekend so successful.  It is amazing to see the support for our juniors and we look forward to returning to Wagga Wagga again next year.

Special thanks must go to major sponsors Peter Lord and Janet Smith from Kilbrogan Trading who not only gave a generous monetary donation but also dedicated so much of their own time to ensure the weekend ran smoothly.  The pair donated a number of scholarships to the juniors to help develop the game and attend various tournaments.  We cannot thank Peter and Janet enough for their contribution towards junior golf.  They really do make the tournament a highlight on the JNJG tournament calendar.

We would like to congratulate all of the juniors who took part in the event.  We hope you enjoyed your weekend and we look forward to seeing you all again next month in Bathurst for the 2015 Peter O’Malley Junior Masters.  Make sure you get your entry in quickly as spaces are filling up fast.

Armstrong and Park Dominate Round 1

Josh Armstrong (The Lakes) and Hannah Park (Dunheved) made the most of the hot conditions during round one of the Wagga Wagga Junior Masters, both firing rounds of two under par.  Armstrong takes the lead in the Boys Championship by 1 shot over Victorian Liam Gransden and Jackson Hearn (Bermagui).  Park's performance sees her 5 shots clear of her rivals Madeleine Nurdi (St Michaels) and Harvey Norman Week of Golf Sub Junior Champion Danni Vasquez (Bonnie Doon).

With the temperature getting up close to 40 degrees many players struggled on the beautiful Wagga Wagga layout.  The competition is close in the Boys 13 Years and Under with Dubbo's Lachlan Jones finishing his round birdie, eagle to be tied for the lead with Leo Soldo (Bonnie Doon) at four over par. A further two shots back sits Corey Lamb (Branxton), Jefferson Fan (Avondale) and Adam Naaman (Liverpool) on 6 over.  All of these boys will be hoping to bring their A game tomorrow to secure that illusive spot in the Bonville Champions Trophy.

The nett round of the day went to Wyong's Brad Jones.  Jones fired a very impressive 80 to secure a phenomenal nett 66.  There were a number of juniors who recorded netts of 67, 68 and 69 so will be hoping to match that tomorrow in the final round.

In the Girls Stableford event Portia Hill (Kareela) and Kiana Toole (Belmont) sit in front on 39 points.  Isaac Fan (Bexley) fired an unbeatable 43 points in the Boys Stableford to sit 5 points clear of Joshuua Crampton (Stonebridge).

Round 2 Draw

Tournament Preview

The 2015 Jack Newton Junior Golf Junior Masters Series kicks off this weekend with the annual Wagga Wagga Junior Masters.  One hundred and 28 juniors from all over the NSW and Victoria will descend upon the Wagga Wagga Country Club to battle it out for the 36-hole championship.

This is the first of eight Junior Masters events being held this year and with a capacity field and a waiting list it is a promising sign for junior golf in NSW.  While a number of Sydney juniors are unable to attend this weekend due to Metropolitan Major Pennant matches, it is pleasing to see a full field including three interstate visitors from Victoria.

In the boys championship it will be an ACT battle with lowest handicapper Jakub Gancarz (Yowani) hoping to take home the silverware over 2014 Sub Junior Boy of the Year Joshua Armstrong (The Lakes).  Pennant Hills junior Jordan Garner will be in hot pursuit alongside James Conran (Duntryleague).  The runner up from 2014, Jackson Hearn (Bermagui) will be hoping he has more success with the title this year after losing in a playoff last year.

It will be a battle of the youngsters for the girls overall championship with a number of the older junior girls out for pennant commitments as well.  Danielle Vasquez (Bonnie Doon) will be hoping her form continues after a successful win in the 2015 Harvey Norman Sub Junior Week of Golf.  Chasing her for that title will be the talented Hannah Park (Dunheved) who despite only a short career on the JNJG circuit, proved she is one contender to watch.  2014 South Coast Junior Masters Champion Madeleine Nurdi (St Michaels) will be hoping to put her name in lights again while Port Macquarie’s Lily Baker is hunting that elusive maiden victory.

Wagga Wagga have three of their own taking part in the event with young star Bart Carroll one to watch in the Boys 13 Years and Under competition.  For William Burkinshaw it will be his first JNJG event and he is joining fellow club member Jake Leary in the stableford competition.

Weather conditions for Wagga Wagga look great and the juniors are enthusiastic to get this series started. Play gets underway from 11.30am-1.30pm on Saturday with a 7.15am shot gun on Sunday.

We look forward to seeing you all for a great weekend of golf.
