Davidson and Spring Win Subaru State Championships

Friday 3rd July, 2015

Karis Davidson (Queensland) and Henry Spring (New Zealand) have won the 2015 Subaru State Championships in contrasting fashion on a beautiful winter's day at The Links Shell Cove.

After starting the final round with a seven shot lead, it was going to take something special from Celina Yuan (The Australian) to challenge the Queenslander, and the current Australian Junior Champion got off to the perfect start with three birdies in the opening three holes. Davidson remained steady however, with birdies on the first and ninth either side of seven straight pars saw her lead by six with nine holes to play. The tournament was over two holes later, when the Queensland star started the back nine with back to back birdies, before cruising home to a nine shot victory. Yuan remained second, also taking out the JNJG State Age Girls 16 Years Title, with Becky Kay (Queensland) finishing in third.

Kiwi Spring also looked to be cruising home, bogey free for 16 holes and leading playing partners Blake Windred (The Australian) and Matias Sanchez (Victoria) by five strokes with only two holes to play. In total control of the tournament, having only a tap in par putt on the 17th, Spring looked home. In what could only be described as "golf", Spring missed his par putt and then hooked his tee shot off the 18th tee deep into the hazard left of the fairway. When his recovery shot from the thick grass stayed in the hazard, forcing the Whakatane member to take a drop and play his fourth from some 240m out, Sanchez and Windred were all of a sudden a chance. Spring's fourth narrowly made it over the hazard, before pitching onto the green some 40 feet below the hole. A brilliant first putt left Spring with a tap in for a triple bogey seven, and the clubhouse lead at four under par, but the tournament wasn't over yet. Windred stood over his birdie putt, and Sanchez his par putt, both with a chance to force a playoff, but when both agonisingly stayed out, the State Championships was headed across the ditch.

Garner and McCarthy Claim Plate Championship

Friday 3rd July, 2015

It was another day of cold temperatures but the wind conditions were slightly more favorable in the fourth round of the 2015 Subaru State Championships Plate Competition at Wollongong Golf Club.

Pennant Hills junior Jordan Garner led the way on the final day firing an epic 2 under par 68, to easily claim the Boys Plate Championship.  In the Girls Championship it was Bathurst’s Emma McCarthy that took home the glory with rounds of 76, 87, 85, 81 (+45).

Despite the wind being less than the previous day, scoring still proved to be tricky with only 22 players recording a score of 79 or better.  Noteworthy performances came from Jackson Jubelin (Port Macquarie) who recorded the second lowest round for the day, a 2 over par 72.  Darcy Carroll (Moree) fired a 73 while Dylan Convoy (The Australian) had 74.  Adam Naaman (Liverpool) was the star of the Boys 13 Years division and finished off a big week with a fantastic round of 77.

The lowest girls round for the day was recorded by Port Kembla’s Sarah Johnson with a 7 over par 78. Sarah was the only girl to record a score in the 70’s in round 3 and 4 at Wollongong.

Overall the juniors in the Plate Championship produced some fantastic results after an extremely long week.  Jack Newton Junior Golf would like to congratulate all of the juniors who participated in the tournament and we look forward to seeing you all out on the course again soon.

Davidson Dazzles on a Windswept Links

Queenslander Karis Davidson has produced the round of the tournament in atrocious conditions to take a commanding lead after the third round of the 2015 Subaru State Championships at The Links Shell Cove. In freezing, at times gale-force winds, Davidson produced the only under par round of the day, to turn a one shot deficit into a seven shot lead with 18 holes to play. Davidson, runner-up at the Australian Amateur was a stunning five under par through 15 holes before a couple of late bogies saw her sign for a three under par 68. Davidson leads overnight leader and Australian Amateur Champion Celina Yuan, who battled her way to a five over par 76. Seven shots further back is another Queenslander Becky Kay, who matched Yuan with a third round 76.

In the difficult conditions, a far cry from the breathless opening two days, no boy managed to break par on a day the course bit back. New Zealander Henry Spring held onto his overnight lead, and heads into the final round with a one shot lead over Matias Sanchez (Victoria). The pair fired matching third round 74's, with NSW State Team Member Blake Windred (The Australian) moving into third after a third round 73. Windred appeared out of contention after starting slowly with five bogies in his opening six holes, but birdies on 12, 13, 14, 17 brought the Novacastrian back in the mix heading into the final round. They are joined in the final group by Isaac Noh (The Australian), who starts the final day five shots back after four late bogies.

Tricky Conditions Test the Plate Juniors at Wollongong

Thursday 2nd July, 2015

With cold temperatures and strong wind conditions play in the third round of the 2015 Subaru State Championships Plate Competition at Wollongong Golf Club proved tough for all.

With only 19 players recording a score of 79 or better it was definitely a sign of the tricky conditions.  Jordan Garner (Pennant Hills) recorded the low round of the day with a 2 over par 72.  Shoalhaven Heads junior Che Sandiford was one of the only players that shone in the blustery conditions.  The 9-handicapper fired a blistering round of 74 (+4). Cumberland’s Jordan Ross also finished with a 74 to sit atop of the Boys 17 Years Plate Championship.

The lowest girls round for the day was recorded by Mollymook’s Kelsey Bennett with a 10 over par 81.

With a final 18 holes to go there are some breakaway leaders in each Age Division and with the temperature set to drop again tomorrow it will be interesting to see if these leaders can maintain their form to take out the win.

Karis and the Kiwi Kill It On the Course

Wednesday 1st July, 2015

It was another day of outstanding golf in the Illawarra for the second round of the 2015 Subaru State Championships.  Kiwi Henry Spring dominates the tournament with consecutive rounds in the 60’s. He “Springs” to the top of the leader board with rounds of 66 and 67 (-8), 1 shot clear Matias Sanchez (VIC) who recorded a phenomenal score of 65 today.

It was a day for scores in the 60’s with a total of 9 juniors shooting 69 or better.  Northern Territory junior Daniel Brown recorded the second round of 65 for the day.  Cromer’s Corey Rae continued to show his fine form with a 4 under round of 66 to shoot him up to third equal with the NSW contingent of Isaac Noh (The Australian), Blake Windred (The Australian), and Lachlan Bill (Bankstown).

The top 10 in the NSW Junior Boys Championship sees six interstate and international players and four NSW juniors all under par and within 8 shots.  The competition over the next two days will be fierce and no doubt this victory will go right down to the wire.

In the Girls Championship Queenslander Karis Davidson set the course on fire at Wollongong with a fantastic score of 67.  She is now within 1 shot of The Australian’s Celina Yuan who also showed class out on the golf course firing a round of 68.  It is looking like a repeat of the battle at the Australian Junior Girls Amateur Championship between Celina and Karis.  They will have to keep their eyes on Ella Adams (SA), Stef Hall (The Australian) and Becky Kay (QLD) who are all within 7 seven shots of the lead.

The race for the NSW Junior Girls Championship will be another tough contest and we can expect to see these young ladies making the most of moving day tomorrow at The Links Shell Cove.

Breakout Round for Bankstown’s Bill

Tuesday 30th June, 2015

ACT Monaro resident and Bankstown GC member Lachlan Bill has had the round of his JNJG career to be the surprise leader after the opening day of the 2015 Subaru State Championships. A JNJG Tour regular Bill fired his first ever under par round in a JNJG event to lead by two strokes, only a week after being selected in the JNJG Boys State Development Program.

Bill started his round at The Links Shell Cove with birdies on the first three holes, before an eagle on the par five 5th saw the 15 Year Old turn in only 30 strokes. Further birdies on the 10th and 11th got the former Tully Park member to an incredible seven under par through 11 holes, before finishing with a 64.

Hot on his heels were the New Zealand contingent, with Henry Spring and Kiwi compatriot Sam Vincent flying out of the blocks. Spring, from Whakatane made five birdies on his opening nine holes, making the turn in only 30 shots before a bogey on the par five 14th slowed his progress, finishing in outright second at minus five. Hamilton resident Vincent was a model of consistency at Wollongong, with four birdies offset by a lone bogey on his way to a round of the day three under par 67 to share fourth on the testing Par 70 Wollongong layout. Matias Sanchez (Victoria) was the only other player under par at Wollongong, firing a one under par 69.

There were plenty of other good scores at The Links Shell Cove, with Isaac Noh (The Australian) outright third after a 67, whilst Josh Wellwood (Queensland), Reid Brown (Wingham) and Andre Lautee (Victoria) all managed three under par 68’s.

Aussie Junior Girl Champ Starts With a Bang

2015 Australian Junior Champion Celina Yuan has started the NSW Junior Championships in fantastic fashion, with a hole in one helping her to a one under par 70 and a share of the lead after the opening round. Yuan had three birdies on the front nine to go with her Ace, before a couple of back nine birdies slowed The Australian Golf Club member down.

Yuan was joined at the top by Doey Choi (Concord), who recovered from a mixed front nine with birdies on the 12th and 16th to take a share of the lead. Links Shell Cove local, and Australian Golf Club member Stef Hall used local knowledge to help her finish the opening round only one shot back at even par. Queensland pair and pre-tournament favourites Becky Kay and Karis Davidson finished the opening round at one over par, tied with Hannah Park (Dunheved).

There were some amazing Nett results over the two courses as well on the opening day, with many “best ever” rounds recorded. Blake Thompson Doolan (Monash 11) fired a Nett 63 in the Boys 15 Years Division, only bettered by overall leader Lachlan Bill, whilst Emma McCarthy (Bathurst 12) ended the day with a Nett 64 which was the best of the Girls Divisions.

Tournament Preview

Field of 270 for 2015 Subaru NSW Junior Golf Championships

Two hundred and seventy eager junior golfers will converge on the Illawarra region next week for the annual Subaru NSW Junior Golf Championships.  In conjunction with the Golf NSW and as part of the Jack Newton Junior Golf Tour, the second of the year’s four majors sees some of the best juniors from across the country battle it out for the title of the NSW Junior Boy or Girl Champion.

This year The Links Shell Cove and Wollongong Golf Club will host the four-day event.  It will take place from the 30th June – 3rd July.  The format of play for the first two days will see the competitors playing one round at each course.  A cut will then be made after 36 holes with the top half going on to contest the Championship Cup playing their final two rounds at The Links Shell Cove, while those who miss the cut will playoff for the Championship Plate at Wollongong.

Up for grabs at this event are not only the overall State Championships but also Age Championships, Country Junior Championships, Champion of Champions and the Inter-District Teams Championship.  In the field of 270, 44 juniors are playing off plus figure handicaps so the standard of golf will be phenomenal.

International and interstate competitors will join our NSW boys in the field this year.  Blake Windred (The Australian) will be leading the charge for NSW.  Fellow junior interstate teammates Jason Hong (Concord), Isaac Noh (The Australian), Corey Jones (Pymble) and Joseph Trinder (Pymble) will be players to watch.  Also rounding out the NSW/ACT contingent will be the in form Josh Armstrong (The Lakes) and Corey Rae (Cromer). All of these players have recorded some outstanding results this year and will be hoping to keep the silverware in our state.  They will be going up against some tough competition including Matias Sanchez (VIC), Konrad Ciupek (VIC), Charlie Pilon (Qld), Jack Thompson (SA), and Kiwi’s Sam Vincent and Henry Spring.

NSW girls will tee it up alongside some tough interstate competitors.  The current Australian Girls Amateur Champion Celina Yuan goes in as the favourite to capture the Girls Championship for NSW.  Doey Choi (Concord) and Hannah Park (Dunheved) will also be hoping to keep the Championship title in our state.  Local Shell Harbour resident Stefanie Hall (The Australian) will be using her local knowledge to her advantage and will be hoping to secure the win for the Illawarra. Interstate girls Soobin Park (VIC), Ella Adams (SA), Becky Kay (QLD) and Karis Davidson (QLD) will be doing their best to take the victory back to their home states.

NSW JNJG members will also be vying for the coveted State Age titles which will secure them a seat on the bus to the Bonville Champions Trophy.  In the 12 and Under Division keep an eye on Cammeray's Yuka Lin in the girls division.  While in the boys division Jeff Fan (Avondale), Harvey Remfrey (Ballina) and Leo Soldo (Bonnie Doon) will all be out to secure the title.

The 13 Years will be hotly contested with June Song (Avondale) and  Belinda Ji (Concord) going head to head in the girls. Harrison Crowe (St Michaels), Tom Heaton (Port Kembla) and Lachlan Jones (Dubbo) will battle it out in the boys event.

Three times Junior Masters Champion Hannah Park (Dunheved) and Avondale's Grace Kim will be hoping to take out the Girls 14 Years division.  The boys in the same age group will be a tough clash with Jye Pickin (Avondale), Ethan Chambers (Bonnie Doon), Aidan Powter (St Michaels) and Kaine Andres (Everglades) all possibilities at taking out the title.

Doey Choi (Concord) goes in as the favourite in the Girls 15 Years division but she will have to watch for challenges from Amy Chu (The Australian), Stef Hall (The Australian) and Chloe Thornton (NSWGC).  The Boys 15 Years division will be a challenge amongst Chris Fan (Avondale), Harry Doig (Ryde-Paramatta), Kyle Underwood (Ballina) and Luke Ferrier (Pennant Hills).

Perhaps the toughest division to predict a winner will be the Boys 16 Years.  Jason Hong (Concord), Corey Rae (Cromer), Corey Jones (Pymble), Josh Armstrong (The Lakes), Jordie Garner (Pennant Hills) or Isaac Noh (The Australian) will have to put together four solid rounds of golf to emerge the champion.  The favourite in the Girls 16 Years would have to be Celina Yuan (The Australian) but she will have a challenger in Northern Rivers Junior Masters Champion Maddie Trew (Coolangatta Tweed Heads).

In the Girls 17 Years division Eleka Moore (Ballina) and Lucy Harris (Muirfield) will be hoping to secure a victory.  While Blake Windred (The Australian), Jakub Gancarz (Yowani), Joseph Trinder (Pymble) and Darcy Boyd (Toukley) will be vying for the title in the Boys 17 Years.

Jack Newton Junior Golf would not be able to run events like this without the hard work put in by the host venues.  Staff at The Links Shell Cove and Wollongong Golf Clubs are busy readying their courses for one of the region’s largest tournaments.

“Supporting our game at a grass roots level is something that we are particularly proud to be involved in,” said General Manager of Wollongong Golf Club, Leigh Hingston. “If last year’s tournament is any indication, we are once again going to be treated to some outstanding golf," Hingston added.

Last year saw the Overall Girl’s Champion Shelly Shin go on to become the number one ranked amateur in Australia. Shelly then took out the World Amateur Team Championship in Japan partnered with Minjee Lee and Su Oh, within six months of her success at Wollongong.

Other top competitors including Brad McIntosh, Nick Flanagan, Brendan Jones, Jake Higginbottom , Nikki Garrett and James Nitties all cut their teeth at the State Age Championships and there is no doubt that this years field will also play host to some promising future stars.

“Our game relies heavily on the development of our juniors and with a field of almost 270, this is a fantastic opportunity to foster some of the very best talent,” said Robby Stephenson, General Manager of The Links Shell Cove. “It is not often that a field of this calibre assembles in the Illawarra, and the talent that is on show during this tournament are quite likely to be the household names of tomorrow,” Stephenson said.

It is going to be an exciting week of golf at two beautiful Illawarra courses.  The annual JNJG Junior AM is also being held on Monday 29th June at Port Kembla Golf Club.  JNJG would like to thank those who have registered for the event and offered sponsorship for the entire week.  It is fantastic to see the support for junior golf development in the region.

JNJG would like to wish everyone safe travels as they head to Wollongong.  We are looking forward to a fantastic week and some great golf!!
