Playoff Drama as Windred Shoots 29

Monday 8th June 2015

There was plenty of drama on the final day at the Macarthur Junior Masters with playoff's needed to determine the winner of the Girls 14/15 Years, Girls 16/17 Years, and Girls Overall title.

After heading into the final round trailing Celina Yuan (The Australian) by two strokes, Doey Choi (Concord) quickly took control of the tournament. Starting on the 10th hole, Choi made an early birdie on the par five 11th before holing out for an eagle two on the par four 16th to lead heading into the back nine. Dunheved's Hannah Park emerged as the closest challenger, recovering from a double bogey on her first hole of the day with five birdies to grab a share of the lead. The girls couldn't be split, with both players missing the chance to win the tournament outright with final hole bogies to finish the tournament at one over par, and a playoff was needed. The sudden death playoff only lasted one hole, with a par enough to give Choi her first Junior Masters victory of the year.

Choi claimed the overall title as well as the 14/15 Years Division, but there was more playoff drama when overnight leader Yuan and Madeleine Nurdi (St Michael's) finished locked together at six over par and on top of the girls 16/17 Years Division. Once more, the playoff only lasted one hole with Yuan claiming the title with a par. The 13 Years and Under Division was a one act affair, with June Song leading from start to finish and record an 11 shot victory.

Whilst the Girls was a nail-biting finish across all divisions, Blake Windred (The Australian) stormed to victory in the Boys division after playing his final 11 holes in SIX under par! After starting slowly with three bogies in the first four holes before making the turn at two over par, Windred flew home with birdies on 10, 13, 15, 16, 18 to finish with a back nine of 29 and a second consecutive 67 to defeat Chris Fan (Avondale) by four shots. Fan finished in outright second whilst also claiming the 14/15 Years division after back to back rounds of 69, with joint overnight leaders Corey Jones (Pymble) and Corey Rae (Cromer) finishing in a tie for third at minus one.

The Boys 13 Years and Under Division was taken out by Aiden Powter (St Michael's), with the 13 year old impressing with back to back rounds of 72. Powter won by six strokes from Lachlan Jones (Dubbo), with Henry Scott (Royal Sydney) taking out the Nett division, finishing at nine under par after a Nett Score of 63 on the second day. The stableford division was taken out by Benny Xu (Bardwell Valley), with the 9 year old backing up his 46 points on day one with 43 points on day two.

Close Contest at Campbelltown

Sunday 7th June 2015

It was a beautiful and sunny winter day in the South West of Sydney, and the 160+ strong field at the Macarthur Junior Masters took full advantage with some fantastic scoring. The shot of the day on Sunday belonged to Jacob Conte (Dubbo), with the 14 year old recording his first ever hole in one on the difficult par three 12th. There were five eagles in total on the opening day, with Jefferson Fan (1st), Corey Jones (3rd), Harrison Keomoungkhoun (9th) and Jacob Schouw (15th) also picking up two shots to par in one go.

Jones took full advantage of the early eagle and addd three birdies to finish the day in a share of the lead after a three under par 67. Joining Jones on top was Blake Windred (The Australian) who carded five birdies to go with a double bogey seven on the seventh, his only blemish of the day. The pair looked like heading into the final round trailing recent North Coast Junior Masters winner Corey Rae (Cromer), who stood on the 18th tee bogey free and at minus four, before dropping a shot on the difficult 18th. Joining the trio in the final group is 14/15 Years leader Chris Fan (Avondale), who holds a two shot lead in the age division battle after opening with a one under par 69 that included four birdies. 13 year old Aiden Powter continues to impress, with the St Michael's junior leading the 13 years and under division after opening with a two over par 72.

The scoring was just as impressive in the Girls division, with recent Australian Girls Champion Celina Yuan (The Australian) as solid as ever on her way to a one under par 70. Yuan leads fellow NSW State Team member Doey Choi (Concord) by two strokes, after Choi had a roller coaster round including a back nine of three birdies, three bogeys, and three pars. One shot further back is June Song (Avondale), with the 13 year old proving her recent runner up finish at the North Coast Junior Masters was no fluke!

The scoring didn't end there, with JOM player Benny Xu (Bardwell Valley) recording 46 stableford points to lead the boys division, with Matteen Mashall (Wentworth Falls) in second after scoring 43 stableford points.

Tournament Preview

Thursday 4th June 2015

As the long weekend approaches, juniors from across the state are in preparation mode for the annual Macarthur Junior Masters at Campbelltown Golf Club. With a capacity field of 164 players in the strongest junior masters field of the year it is bound to be a great weekend of junior golf.  According to the weather forecast the juniors are in for a sunny but very cold couple of days but that wont keep them from bringing the heat to the 36 hole event.

In contention for the Overall Boys title will be three of our 2015 Junior Masters Champions; Josh Armstrong (The Lakes and winner of the Wagga Wagga and Peter O'Malley Junior Masters), James Conran (Duntryleague and winner of the Western Sydney Junior Masters) and Corey Rae (Cromer and winner of the North Coast Junior Masters).  All three have proved they are in form and hungry to get their hands on another title.  NSW State Junior Boys Team representatives Jason Hong (Concord), Isaac Noh (The Australian), Blake Windred (The Australian) and Corey Jones (Pymble) are in the hunt for their first win of the series.  It would also pay to keep an eye on NSW Development players Chris Fan (Avondale) and Jordan Garner (Pennant Hills) who could take home the silverware if they can put together two great rounds.

Three times Masters Champion in 2015, Hannah Park (Dunheved) will be working hard to add Macarthur to her list of titles, which already include the Wagga Wagga, Peter O'Malley, and North Coast Junior Masters Championships.  Australian Junior Girls Amateur Champion and reigning Macarthur Junior Masters Champion Celina Yuan (The Australian) will be doing her best to keep Hannah's hands off the trophy.  NSW State Junior Girls Team members Doey Choi (Concord), Stef Hall (The Australian) and Amy Chu (The Australian) as well as NSW Development players Belinda Ji (Concord), Chloe Thornton (NSW) and Danni Vasquez (Bonnie Doon) will all be in the mix at the top of the leaderboard.  The title is certainly anyone's for the taking.

With not only titles up for grabs but also lucrative spots on the bus to the Bonville Champions Trophy available to all age divisions there is no doubt that the competition this weekend is going to be fierce.  A capacity field with a waiting list means an action packed tournament getting underway at 6.52am on Sunday morning for the Boys 14/15 and 16/17 Years Divisions.  The Boys 13 and Under Division as well as all of the Girls Divisions and our Stableford players will kick off the Sunday afternoon field from 10.58am.
