The Boys Championship was a two horse race between Jye Pickin (Avondale) and Brad Doherty (Oatlands) heading into the final 18 holes.  It was Brad who took advantage and came from two shots behind to clinch the Championship by two shots.  Brad closed his week with a four over 76 giving him a five round total of 369 (+14).  While Jye didn’t have the best final day his performance across the week proved he is certainly a force to be reckoned with and one to watch in the future.

In the Boys 13 Years Branxton junior Corey Lamb was too strong for his competition and fired a fantastic one under par 71, the round of the day, to close his campaign and secure his seat on the bus to the Bonville Champions Trophy.  Jefferson Fan (Avondale) also made sure he qualified for Bonville with a closing round of 74 to finish on 388 and three shots clear of Tom Heaton (Port Kembla) in the Boys 12 and Under.  The last scratch winner for the week and joining Danni, Brad, Corey, Belinda and Jefferson at Bonville was Amber Thornton (NSW) who successfully claimed the title in the Girls 13 Years division.

Over the week there were some amazing nett scores recorded across the field.  Liam Gillard was certainly one of those juniors to post some fantastic scores. The Lynwood youngster recorded five nett rounds in the 60’s including a final round of 61.  He finished on a mind blowing score of 322 (-33), 29 shots clear of his nearest rival in the Boys 12 and Under.  Adam Coull (Bankstown) was the nett champion in the Boys 13 Years finishing on 344 (-11).  In the Boys 14 Years Avondale’s Anthony Tan edged out Arthur Barakat (Cumberland) by one shot after recording a sensational five round total of 339 (-16).  Toukley’s Annika Boyd was victorious in the Girls 12 and Under nett on a total score of 349 (-15).  Monica Johnson (Moore Park) won the Girls 13 Years nett on 367 (+3) while St Michaels junior Teresa Nurdi was the Girls 14 Years Nett Champion on 359 (-5).

Round 4: Dunheved Golf Club

Big Changes Take Place on Moving Day

This round is typically known as moving day and the sub juniors certainly did some moving at the beautiful Dunheved Golf Course. Not only were the temperatures hot, so was the golf.

Bonnie Doon’s Danni Vasquez put together another stellar even par 74 and has now taken the overall lead in the Championship on 299 (+10).  Local lass Hannah Park made the most of the home course advantage and joined Danni on 74 for the day.  The 12 year old stars Belinda Ji (Concord) and June Song (North Ryde) are certainly making their mark on the tournament and both recorded rounds of 76 today.  They sit in second and third with 305 and 307 respectively. Tournament leader from round three Pamela Tsiamis (St Michaels) struggled on the course today with an 85, slipping down to fourth position.  With one round to go and only 9 shots separating the top four, anyone could be crowned the victor.

There were also big changes in the Boys Championship with Avondale’s Jye Pickin making the most of the day, returning an impressive one over 73 and overtaking day three leader Brad Doherty (Oatlands) who finished with 76.  Jye now leads Brad by 2 shots with 18 holes to go. Luka Brucic (Federal) and Anthony Tan (Avondale) are tied for third at 306.  It is a tight race and the boys will certainly be determined to shoot the lights out tomorrow at Penrith.

There were also some other big movers and shakers out at Dunheved today.  Belmont’s Kiana Toole certainly was one of them.  Kiana fired an outstanding round of 90 giving her a sizzling nett 60! She is now tied for the lead in the Girls 12 and Under nett.

Amber Thornton (NSW) did the moving when she needed to and after a 76 (+2) she has taken the lead in the Girls 13 Years.  She heads into the final round 7 shots ahead of Avondale’s Kara Williams.

Teresa Nurdi (St Michaels) had one of the rounds of the day in the Girls 14 Years, a superb round of three over 77 giving her a nett 69.  Mollymook’s Kelsey Bennett was another in this division to record a nett 69 today.

It was the ever consistent, Port Kembla junior, Tom Heaton who made the most of moving day and has taken over the lead in the Boys 12 and Under with the round of the day in his division.  Tom managed to put together an impressive 78 even with a triple on the final hole. In the nett competition for this age group it’s a one horse race with Liam Gillard (Lynwood) recording his fourth consecutive score in the 60’s.  His 67 today moves him to -22 and 20 shots clear of his nearest opponent.

Ejun Choi (Avondale) was the star of the Boys 13 Years recording the best scratch score of 75 (+3).  Branxton’s Corey Lamb remains on the top of the leader board for this division with a solid 79, bringing his four round total to 311 (+7). Bankstown’s Adam Coull has taken the lead in the nett on 272 (-11) with another solid round of 70.  One shot behind him is Oli Payne (Port Macquarie) on 273.

Round 3: Stonecutters Ridge Golf Club

The Competition Heats Up

A brilliant course paired with some great weather was the scene at Stonecutters Ridge today for the third round of the Harvey Norman Sub Junior Week of Golf.  Not only did the temperature get up but some of the juniors also were on fire with some sizzling scores.

Avondale’s Jye Pickin was first out alongside tournament leader Brad Doherty (Oatlands) and Jye was keen to make up some ground and he did just that.  The Avondale junior set the pace early recording the only under par round of the day, an impressive one under 71.  Only one shot now separates the two at the top with Brad hanging onto the lead with a three round total of 217.  There is no doubt that Jye will be working hard to see his name in lights on Friday.  Anthony Tan (Avondale) and Luka Brucic (Federal) round out the top four on 227 and 228 respectively.

The Girls Championship is also a tight race with Danni Vasquez (Bonnie Doon) now just two shots behind current leader Pamela Tsiamis (St Michaels).  Danni recorded the best girls score for the day finishing with a solid 74 (+2).  Pamela and Concord star Belinda Ji both had 75’s.  So the Girls Championships sees Pamela remain atop on 223, with Danni two shots back on 225 and Belinda a further four shots back on 229.  With 36 holes remaining in the tournament the title is very much up for grabs.

Even though the course was in excellent condition it proved a challenge for many of our sub juniors. Jefferson Fan (Avondale) was the only boy in the 12 and Under division to record a score in the 70’s after an impressive six over 78.  Lynwood’s Liam Gillard continued his dominance in the nett event for this age group by recording his third consecutive score in the 60’s.  Liam finished with an impressive 65.  He now sits at 194 (-17) for the tournament, 15 shots clear of his nearest opponent.  Corey Lamb (Branxton) recorded the lowest round in the Boys 13 Years firing a 77 to take the lead in the division on 232. The best nett in this division went to Blake Holden (Cronulla) for his impressive 68. In the Girls 12 and Under division Kiana Toole (Belmont) had her best round of the tournament recording a nett 69.

Round 2: Richmond Golf Club

Despite some early showers the day turned out rather hot and sticky at Richmond Golf Club for round two of the Harvey Norman Sub Junior Week of Golf.  The Richmond track was in fantastic condition and proved a great challenge for all competitors.

Eager to maintain his lead Oatlands member Brad Doherty put together a solid round of 72 (+2), taking him to a two round total of 140 (+1).  But it was Avondale’s Anthony Tan who recorded the round of the day with an impressive one over 71.  Tan (143) sits 3 shots behind our tournament leader, while fellow Avondale member Jye Pickin is a further 4 shots back after consistent rounds of 73, 74 (147). The top 11 boys all sit within 15 shots of the leader so with three rounds left the Championship is certainly anyones for the taking.

Round one performer Pamela Tsiamis (St Michaels) continued her dominance in the Girls Championship with another solid round of 74 (+2), giving her a two round total of 148 (+5).  Just 3 shots back is Bonnie Doon’s Danni Vasquez who fired a four over par 76 to go with her 75 from round one.  Two of the youngest girls, Belinda Ji (Concord) and June Song (North Ryde) are tied for third with a two round total of 154.  An impressive round of two over (74) from Belinda saw her share the round of the day honours with Tsiamis and rocket up the leaderboard.

Round two highlights included a nett 67 from Liam Gillard (Lynwood), which goes with his 62 nett in round one bringing him to a two round total of 129 (-10) and 7 shots clear of his nearest rival in the Boys 12 and Under.  A fantastic score of 74 from Bankstown’s Adam Coull saw him move up the leaderboard in the Boys 13 Years.  His round of 74 meant he recorded a very impressive nett 62.  In the Girls 12 and Under Toukley’s Annika Boyd recorded an excellent nett 68.  Rhys Ballinger (Belmont) and Dylan Grogan (Wyong) both finished with nett 65, which has helped them move up a few places in the Boys 14 Years. Emma McCarthy (Bathurst) had the best nett for the Girls 14 Years today finishing with 69.

Round 1: Muirfield Golf Club

Play got underway early at Muirfield today for the 2015 Harvey Norman Sub Junior Week of Golf.  Despite overcast skies, the temperature was perfect and there was not a breath of wind.  Seventy six players are taking part in the event this year and are in for a great week on some fantastic Sydney courses.

Oatlands member Brad Doherty was on fire early, sitting at two under par after his opening 9 holes.  A one over 36 on the back 9 secured him a final score in the red.  Brad felt relieved to have made par on the last hole despite his drive finishing in the trees.  Hot on his heels is Clayton Small, from Maitland, on 71 and Avondale's Anthony Tan rounds out the top three with 73 (+3).

It's a tight race in the Girls Championship with strong opening rounds from Pamela Tsiamis (St Michaels) and June Song (North Ryde) who both recorded with rounds of 74 (+3). Pamela was consistent with two 37's while June started all guns blazing opening with two under 34 but followed that up with a disappointing five over on the closing 9 holes.  Bonnie Doon's Danni Vasquez sits a further shot back on 75.

Other note worthy performances from round 1 include a nett 68 from Monica Johnson (Moore Park) in the Girls 13 Years. In the Boys 12 Years and Under Liam Gillard (Lynwood) recorded a blistering nett 62.  Oli Payne (Port Macquarie) is leading the Boys 13 Years after a fantastic round of 74, giving him a nett 63. Avondale's Ejun Choi sits in second place in the Boys 13 Years Nett with 66.  Anthony Tan (Avondale) and Tim Ryan (Highlands) are tied in the Boys 14 Years Nett with impressive scores of 64.

What about Hayden Faulkner, our visitor from Christmas Island, playing the Par 3 15th he holed his second shot out of the bunker to record a birdie. Not bad for a youngster who comes from the only golf course on the Island, a 9 hole beauty considered Australia's northern most course and it does not have a single bunker. Hayden sits in second in the Boys 12 and Under Nett with a great score of 65.

The following players are leading their divisions:

Girls Championship: June Song (North Ryde), Pamela Tsiamis (St Michaels) 74
