Round 5 - Gannon and Mehmet-Grohn claim Harvey Norman Crowns

Amelia Mehmet-Grohn (Coffs Harbour) and Mitch Gannon (Bonnie Doon) are the 2015 Harvey Norman Week of Golf Champions.

In extremely hot and humid conditions, low scores were the order of the day to finish another long week of golf in January.

Starting the final round with a commanding six shot lead, a good start would all but wrap up the championship for Mitch Gannon in his final JNJG event. He got that good start, with six pars and a birdie on the 5th getting him into rhythm on the final day. He had to be at his consistent best, with Corey Jones (Pymble) picking up birdies on the 1st, 3rd and 5th to move into second place. Joe Kim (Castle Hill) also had an early birdie, and the tournament quickly turned into a three horse race. A birdie on the 10th again stretched the lead for Gannon, but Kim and Jones wouldn't go away and when the leader dropped shots on the 11th, 13th and 14th, it was once again a race in three. When Kim made a monster downill birdie on the 15th, the lead was cut to two with just three holes remaining, but Gannon remained calm and a superb tee shot on the par three 18th set up a birdie on the last, and a five shot victory. Kim and Jones finished in a tie for second at four over par, which was enough to give Jones the 16 Years Boys Division Title. He finished four shots clear from Isaac Noh (The Australian), who closed with rounds of 70-69 to rocket up the leaderboard. Noh finished one shot clean of Samuel Nashaar (Castle Hill) who had the round of the day going after an eagle on the 12th, before three late bogies ruin his final round.

One of the stories of the tournament was Penrith Golf Club young gun Josh Gadd, who led the tournament after a blistering opening round 67 and hung on over the final four rounds to claim the Boys 15 Years Title by three strokes. After taking a four shot lead into the final round, Gadd was calm and relaxed over the opening 12 holes, with four birdies seeing him two under par for the round and lead by as many as six shots with six holes to play. Trying to close out his first ever JNJG victory in a major event saw a few nervy moments, but a birdie on the 15th hole sealed the deal. Harry Doig (Ryde Parramatta) played consistenly for the entire week to finish second in the age group, whilst it was also a great showing by James Conran (Duntryleague) who finished a further four shots back.

Rory Layden (Monash) was a standout in the Nett division, with five rounds in the 60s seeing him finish an incredible 28 under par! Sam Hatfield (Gosford) was also impressive, taking out the 17 years and over Nett division with an 18 under par total. It was a two horse race from start to finish in the 15 years Nett division, with Jack Glasson (Monash) pipping Jake Capeski (Lynwood) by one stroke after both boys fired final round Nett 64's.

Amelia Mehmet-Grohn (Coffs Harbour) took a three shot lead into the final round of the Girls Harvey Norman Week of Golf. Two front nine birdies had extended that lead to five shots and she never looked back, cruising to her first ever major JNJG title. 17 year old Mehmet-Grohn finished with a five shot victory overall, whilst her impressive performance saw her claim the Girls 17 years division by a whopping 41 strokes. Celina Yuan (The Australian) couldn't keep her hot form going which saw her lead by as many as 10 shots after the second round, finishing in second spot. Yuan finished second overall and claimed the 15 years division by two strokes from the fast finishing Chloe Thornton (NSW), with 16 year old Antonia Gonzalez (Concord) next best.

Isabella Garay (Monash) stood out in the Nett division, finishing the tournament as the only girl under par at minus five.

Round 4 - Exciting Day Looms at Pennant Hills

Mitch Gannon (Bonnie Doon) and Amelia Mehmet-Grohn (Coffs Harbour) have held onto their overnight leads, and head into the final round at Pennant Hills as the player's to catch at the 2015 Harvey Norman Week of Golf.

Gannon started slowly with two bogies on the front nine, before showing his class to restore his lead with three back nine birdies. The big mover on Thursday was Joe Kim (Castle Hill), after his round of the day 69 saw him climb into outright second. Kim started the day nine shots back from Gannon, but has narrowed that lead to six with one day remaining. Corey Jones (Pymble) had another frustrating day on the greens, the 16 year old remaining third overall after an even par 72. Jones leads Isaac Noh (The Australian) by five strokes in the Boys 16 Years Division, after the NSW State Team Member bounced back from a disappointing round three with a two under par 70 on Thursday.

The surprise packet of the tournament is Penrith GC member Josh Gadd, who continues to match it with some of his more high profile opponents. Gadd was rock solid in the third round, three birdies going with three bogies that saw him sign for an even par 72. This left Gadd in fourth position overall, but extended his lead to four shots in the Boys 15 Years Division. Harry Doig (Ryde Parramatta) moved into second place in the age group after matching Gadd with a 72, with Jordie Garner slipping to third after two double bogies on the back nine.

The girls division promises to be close on the final day, with as many as four golfers still in with a chance of claiming the overall title.

Overnight leader Mehmet-Grohn started nervously, and her four shot overnight lead had disappeared when she took a triple bogey seven on the second and second placed Celina Yuan (The Australian) made a birdie. She recovered well, playing her final 10 holes in one under par to restore her lead, finishing with a three over par 75. Yuan remains second after a 74, with Chloe Thornton (NSW) storming into contention after being the only girl to break par. Thornton got on the birdie train on the back nine, with birdies on the 11th, 12th, 13th, 15th and 16th giving her a live chance heading into the final round. 16 year old leader Antonia Gonzalez (Concord) is fourth overall, six shots behind Mehmet-Grohn after a steady fourth round which included 15 pars.

In the Nett Division, Rory Layden (Monash) is having the tournament of his career, currently a massive 24 under par through the opening four rounds. Sam Hatfield (Gosford) and Matt Dane (Ryde Parramatta) are 13 under and 11 under par respectively, and are set to battle it out for the Boys 17 Years Nett Division on Friday.

Round 3 - Gannon Leads Whilst Mehmet-Grohn Sizzles

Mitch Gannon (Bonnie Doon) and Amelia Mehmet-Grohn (Coffs Harbour) have stormed to the lead at the 2015 Harvey Norman Junior Week of Golf.

Starting the day 10 shots behind runaway leader Celina Yuan (The Australian), Mehmet-Grohn exploded into contention after a superb end to her front nine, with four birdies in five holes getting her to the turn at three under par. One birdie and one bogey on the back nine left the Coffs Harbour 17 year old with the round of the day, her three under par 69 enough for a four stroke lead. After back to back under par rounds, overnight leader Yuan struggled on a difficult Avondale layout, with two triple bogies not helping her cause. Yuan remains in second overall, four shots behind the leader, with a four shot lead over fellow 15 year old Chloe Thornton (NSW) in the Girls 15 Years Division. Antonia Gonzalez (Concord) leads in the Girls 16 Years Division, after a steady five over par 77 on day three.

In his last junior event, 17 year old Gannon is showing his class in the Boys Division and remains the only player under par after a difficult round three. In testing conditions, Gannon fired four birdies and two bogies for a 69, his third consecutive under par round, to open up a seven shot lead. Corey Jones (Pymble) sits in second position overall and leads the Boys 16 Years Division by five strokes after a 74 on day three, with a host of players in a tie for third at four over par. They include round one Tournament Leader and current Boys 15 Years Division leader Josh Gadd (Penrith), Jackson Hearn (Bermagui), Joe Kim (Castle Hill) and Nathan Barbieri (North Ryde).

It wasn't a great day for Kyle Underwood, but the Ballina Junior takes out the shot of the day after holing his wedge on the par four 17th for an eagle two!

Round 2 - Birthday Girl Opens Huge Lead

Celina Yuan (The Australian) has celebrated her 16th birthday in style, opening up a 10 shot lead after the second round at the Harvey Norman Week of Golf at a hot and humid Oatlands Golf Club. Yuan fired a second consecutive round of two under par, with six birdies, including four birdies in a row, to post a 36 hole total of four under par. 16 year old leader Antonia Gonzalez (Concord) and 17 year old leader Amelia Mehmet-Grohn (Coffs Harbour) are tied for second overall at six over par, one shot clear of Chloe Thornton (NSW) who turned her tournament around with five birdies in eight holes after a slow start.

With a high quality field chasing, Josh Gadd (Penrith) remained calm on the second day and is still the man to catch at the Harvey Norman Week of Golf. Backing up from his opening round of 67, a 71 on day two saw him remain on top all day with in form Mitch Gannon (Bonnie Doon), playing in the last group of the day, joining Gadd at minus three. Gannon carded five birdies on day two, which was enough to see him take the lead in the Boys 17 Years Division. Corey Jones (Pymble) is in third place at minus one, the 16 year old taking the lead in his age group after an even par 69 on day two. The big mover was Pennant Hills Jordie Garner, a round of the day 67 catapulting him up the leaderboard.

The shot of the day on day two went to Mark Hancock (Stonecutters Ridge). Hancock stepped up on the 168m par 3 5th and knocked his 5 iron straight into the hole for an ace!! It helped Hancock to a 73 in the second round, and a share of 14th place after two rounds.

Round 1 - Penrith Young Gun Leads the Way

Penrith Golf Club member Josh Gadd has upstaged some of his older and more fancied rivals to lead after the opening round at the Harvey Norman Week of Golf. A brilliant putting display by the 15 year old saw Gadd record seven birdies and just two bogies on his way to a five under par 67. Gadd leads by one stroke, after Dean Forrest (Muirfield) recorded a bogey free round of 68, with four birdies seeing him lead the Boys 17 Years Division. A stroke further back was Samuel Nashaar (Castle Hill) and recent High School graduate Daniel Reale (NSW) who was also went bogey free on his way to a 69. The shot of the day was played by the Boys 16 Years leader Brandon Biddle (Everglades), who turned an over par round into an under par round with one swing of the club. Two over par with three holes to play, Biddle birdied the 16th hole before finishing with an Albatross on the Par 5 18th hole to sign for a 70.

Celina Yuan (The Australian) is a familiar name at the top of the leaderboard at Jack Newton Junior Golf Events and she is once again on top in the Girls Division after a two under par 70. After starting with 12 straight pars, Yuan found trouble on the Par 4 13th with a Double Bogey 6, but responded beautifully with two birdies and an eagle over the closing five holes to see her regain the lead. Coffs Harbour golfer Amelia Mehmet-Grohn sits in second spot after the opening days play, closing with birdies on the final two holes for an even par 72 to also lead the Girls 17 Years division. Third overall and the leader in the 16 Years Division was Madeleine Nurdi (St Michaels) after two closing bogies ruined an otherwise impressive day and saw her finish with a 73.

The round of the day however belonged to 15 Year Old Amber Love. The Lynwood Golf Club member, who admitted Pre-Round that she had been practicing very hard, fired four birdies, four bogies, and a double bogey to sit in fourth position. What makes Love's round so impressive is her handicap, the 16 marker recording a 14 Under Par Nett score of 58, and an 18 shot lead after only 18 holes.
