Amy Chu and Cooper Geddes Crowned Srixon Sub Junior Champions

Friday 3rd October, 2014

Amy Chu (Bonnie Doon) and Cooper Geddes (Western Australia) have won the closest Srixon International Sub Junior Classic in years, after hanging on for nail biting one stroke victories at Kurri GC.

Thirteen year old West Australian Geddes recovered from a disastrous start, a triple bogey seven on the opening hole, and two further bogies on the second and fourth holes, to defeat Hawaiian Brentt Salas. Two front nine birdies steadied the ship, before another birdie on the 12th saw Geddes regain the lead from Salas who had broken away from Brad Doherty (Oatlands) in the 14 years division. Salas himself recovered from a slow start to the tournament, with the Hawaiian's final 36 hole score of one over par by far the tournament's best. Jed Morgan (Queensland) finished in a tie for third with early leader Doherty, after a final round 74. The Boys 12 Years and Under division was dominated by the Queenslanders, with Kaito Chiu defeating Tyler Duncan by six shots.

Amy Chu (Bonnie Doon) won her first ever major JNJG tournament, holding her nerve down the stretch to defeat Hannah Park (Dunheved) by the barest of margins. Doey Choi (Concord) had stormed to the lead, before a quadruple bogey on the par four 13th ended her chances. Choi finished a shot further back, but the day was all about Chu.

A bogey on the first was followed by seven straight pars, before birdies on the 9th and 11th saw her regain the lead. Back to back bogeys on the 13th and 14th gave Chu a few nervous moments, but she showed nerves of steel to par home and win the event. Chu was thrilled with the win, which also sees her qualify for the Bonville Champions Trophy. Grace Kim (Avondale) and Belinda Ji (Concord) cruised to victory in the 13 Years and 12 Years and Under, whilst Giselle Vigna claimed her first major victory after winning the Girls 14 Years Nett.

The 2014 Srixon International was at Kurri GC for the final time, after more than 20 years, with the tournament returning to Stonebridge Golf Club at Cessnock in 2015.
