Two Hole in Ones and 10 Under Par Rounds Recorded at Campbelltown

The future of junior golf in NSW looks promising after scorching results at the 2014 Macarthur Junior Masters at Campbelltown Golf Club.  Heading into round two there was a three way tie in both the Boys and Girls Championships.  All of the juniors were thirsty for the win and all guns were blazing as round two got underway.

Avondale’s Isaac Noh dug deep to claim the Boys Overall Championship by one shot over Bonnie Doon’s Austin Bautista. Four others finished in a tie for third a further shot back.  The Girls Championship was also a tight race but it was The Australian’s Celina Yuan who captured her first Junior Masters title of the year after firing an impressive one under par 70 to finish four shots ahead of Shelly Shin (Concord) and Jess Lasky (The Australian).  Shelly went on to take the Girls 16 Years and Over scratch over Jess on the first playoff hole.

Hole in ones were a common occurrence at Campbelltown today with Pennant Hills junior Jordie Garner recording one on the 6th hole and Kareela’s Ethan Keane holing out on 12 for his first ever hole in one.  Ethan then went on to card a three under par round of 67.

Juniors made the most of the course conditions and over the two day event there were 10 rounds under par. In round one four boys managed to finish in the red while day two saw 6 players go under par.  Celina Yuan recorded the only under par round for the girls with a one under 70. Christopher Fan (Avondale) put together a fantastic round of four under par 66 and Ethan Keane was one shot back on 67.  Mitchell Gannon (Bonnie Doon), Mitchell Norbis (Concord) and Queenslander Louis Dobbelaar all shot one under par 69.

The stableford division also produced some outstanding scores.  Nathan Truong (Camden, 32) had a two round total of 91 points.  Three points behind was Nathan Barbera (Callala, 29) on 88.  Rounding out the top three on 87 points was Sam Smilie from Antill Park.

The scores from the tournament reflect the talented juniors we have at JNJG and we would like to congratulate each of them, not only for their excellent performance on the course but also for their conduct off the course.  There is a great deal of support and encouragement amongst our juniors and it is wonderful to witness.

We would like to thank the Campbelltown Golf Club and its staff and volunteers for their help over the past two days.  It is often hard to find a course in Sydney that is willing to give up two days over a long weekend to host a junior event and we are very thankful to Campbelltown who hosted this event for a few years now.

Also a reminder to all players to get your entry in for the 2014 Subaru State Championships at Wollongong and The Links Shell Cove.

Round 1:Three Way Tie for the Lead at Campbelltown!!

Despite rain predictions earlier in the week, round one of the 2014 Macarthur Junior Masters at Campbelltown Golf Club began under clear skies.  Whilst the morning field experienced the cooler winter temperatures, it was the afternoon field that had to cope with the difficult wind conditions.

After 18 holes three boys sit atop the leaderboard shooting fantastic scores of two under par, 68.  Junior masters stalwart Austin Bautista looked in fine form after 9 holes at four under par.  A double and two bogeys on the back coupled with two birdies saw him finish the round at two under par.  Wagga Wagga Junior Masters Champion Jason Hong (Concord) joined Austin on top of the leaderboard and is hoping he can record a second Masters title this season.  Avondale’s Isaac Noh rounds out the top three while 10 other players sit within four shots.  With the scores so close round two promises to be an excellent display of junior golf.

The Girls Championship is similar with three players tied on two over par after round one.  Concord’s Shelly Shin and The Australian’s Celina Yuan and Jess Lasky lead the charge for the overall title.  St Michael’s Stefanie Hall sits one shot back while Bonnie Doon’s Amy Chu and Concord’s Belinda Ji are two shots off the pace.  Like the race for the Boys title, the Overall Girls Championship will be a tight battle and everyone will be keen to play their best golf.

Special mention goes to Marco Perrin (Bexley, 22) who is playing in the stroke event for the first time.  Marco shot a fantastic score of 91 to lead the Boys 13 Years and Under Nett on 69.  Also congratulations to Nathan Barbera (Callala, 29) who recorded a personal best round of 88 to record 47 stableford points.  Nathan and Marco both began in the JNJG Juniors on the Move program and are now regulars in the Junior Masters events.  It is wonderful to see their progress and no doubt many more youngsters will be coming through the ranks in the years to come.
