Brett Ogle Junior Masters

Round 2 - Choi and Gannon Crowned Champions

Doey Choi (Concord) and Mitch Gannon (Bonnie Doon) have won the 2014 Brett Ogle Junior Masters at the very hot Goulburn Golf Club.

Taking a commanding five stroke lead into the final round, Doey was level headed, recording back to back under par rounds to claim a 10 shot victory from Danni Vasquez (Bonnie Doon) and Chloe Thornton (NSW GC). A further stroke back, and one of the big improvers in JNJG events in 2014 was Girls 13 and Under Champion Amber Thornton (NSW GC), who started her round by driving the ball onto the green on the short par 4 5th, and knocking the putt in for an eagle two! That got her headed in the right direction, and she never looked back, recording her first ever under par round to beat Belinda Ji by two shots. The 16 Years and Over division was taken out by New Zealander Krystal Hu, who flew over across the Tasman just to play in the event! Krystal struggled on the opening day, but got used to the conditions quickly to record a one under par 71 in round two, and defeat Eleena Kyriacou (St Michaels) by one shot.

Jess Lamaro (Shelley Beach) had the best round of her short career on the way to winning the Girls Stableford Division, whilst Grace Lee (Ryde Parramatta) and Brianna Robards (Belmont) recorded impressive Nett Scores of 11 under par and 10 under par respectively.

Whilst Doey was cruising to victory in the girls event, the boys title was headed down to the wire, with Mitch Gannon (Bonnie Doon), Justin Kim (NSW GC), and 2013 winner Kurt Burns (Bonnie Doon) separated by one shot with 9 holes to play. Gannon and Kim settled down to fight it out, and it wasn’t until a 12 foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole that Gannon could claim victory. Kim had to settle for the Boys 14 and 15 Years title, whilst ACT local Luka Brucic had his best JNJG tournament of his career, finishing in a tie for fourth overall and winning the Boys 13 Years and Under Division by an impressive eight shots from Corey Lamb (Branxton).

The boys stableford scores were also astonishing, with Sebastian Sara (Bexley) winning the with 88 points over two rounds!! Results in the nett events were similar with Joshua Robards (Belmont) who finished at 14 under par to win the Boys 13 Years and Under Nett Division.  The scores were even better in the 14 and 15 Years division, with Troy Brouwer (Belmont) finishing second at 15 under par, one behind Jackson Rogan (Kareela) at 16 under par!

Once again, a big thank you to the Goulburn GC and Brett Ogle for hosting the event, and to the tournament sponsor, Srixon, for their generous support of JNJG over the entire season.

Round 1

Saturday saw a full field of 128 players take to the testing Goulburn Golf Club layout for the 2014 Brett Ogle Junior Masters.

Hot and dry conditions for the past month saw the course playing a touch shorter than normal, but as always the greens were presented with a perfect surface, which meant good putts always went in.

Justin Kim returned to the form of earlier in the 2014 season with a sensational four under par 67. Kim fired six birdies in his round, to take a one shot lead from defending champion Kurt Burns (Bonnie Doon). Burns also had his round to four under through 10 holes, before he slowed down, signing for a 68. The best of the younger brigade was Luka Brucic (Federal GC), who flew out of the blocks to lead the tournament at three under par, before eventually finishing with one over par 72. Luka takes a three shot lead into the final round of the Boys 13 and Under division.

In the Girls event, JNJG regular and NSW Amateur Champion Doey Choi (Concord GC) played consistent golf for the entire round to lead the tournament, with two birdies and an eagle helping her to a three under par 69. Chloe Thornton (NSW GC) is her closest challenger, after an up and down round of 74 that included an incredible SEVEN birdies. Belinda Ji continues to impress at a JNJG level, after her round of 75 saw her take a commanding four shot lead into the final round of the Girls 13 Years and Under division.

There were also some impressive Nett performances across both boys and girls divisions. Josh Robards (Belmont) 64, Jackson Rogan (Woolooware) 64, Ejun Choi (Avondale) 65 all had career best rounds,  with Emma McCarthy (Bathurst) 66, Grace Lee (Ryde Parramatta) 67, and Brianna Robards (Belmont) 67 proving the girls could also handle the hard and fast layout with fantastic scores.

All players need to register for the final round tomorrow at 7:00am, with play to get underway with a shotgun start at 7:30am.
